A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

@Isisiris

Love diamonds and rust. Did she really write it about Bob Dylan? Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot is one of mine. But I have many
Love Gordon Lightfoot as well. Recently remembered If You Could Read My Mind. Same vibe, Bread's Everything I Own. Fantastic songs.

After my dad died, I had Billy Bragg loving boyfriend who always played Tank Park Salute in the car. Sad

Kiss me goodnight and say my prayers
Leave the light on at the top of the stairs
Tell me the names of the stars up in the sky
A tree taps on the window pane
That feeling smothers me again
Daddy is it true that we all have to die

Tothesea Ah, yes I’d second your picks. They both manage to have a short-cut to the soul. Having never listened to Nick Cave before, I watched one of his concerts on TV where he sang Into My Arms and closed with Push The Sky Away. It was one of the most mesmerising things I’ve ever seen.

NotYourReindeer · 19/01/2021 20:10

Mine are nowhere near as cool as most mentioned on here.

Both have hit me at different times during parenthood.

The first was God Only Knows by the Beach Boys and I had to pull the car over as I was bereft, looking at my baby in her carrier and hearing the words properly for the first time words that expressed how I felt for this little human who was my first overwhelming love.

"if you should ever leave me, though life would still go on believe me, the world would show nothing to me so what good would living do me"

Really happy, upbeat song and I go and turn it into something morbid Grin

The second is no less cheesy. Same child. Watching Mamma Mia (terrible film but 10 year old DD was obsessed) for the first time and Slipping Through My Fingers came on and I had to leave the room as it made me blub! It's played fairly regularly because of Mamma Mia but that was the first time I'd heard it since I was a child.

The Simon and Garfunkel 7 o'clock news is very powerful too

Tianatiers · 19/01/2021 20:10

Wires by Athlete gets me every time and also Because of You by Kelly Clarkson.

Just thought of another - Yesterday Once More, The Carpenters. It reminds me of my sister who died 7 years ago.

AppleCinnamonVanilla · 19/01/2021 20:14
Not a song, a whole album. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd. Sit in a warm, dark room with it on as loud as you can get away with. It’s mesmerising!
Agreed.

The lunatic is on the grass line reminds me of what Father In Law calls his neighbour when he’s mowing the lawn 😂😂😂.

Inastatus · 19/01/2021 20:16

Sorry I credited hatsstrategicallydipped but it’s you @PoirotsMissLemon - thank you 😊

cobblers123 · 19/01/2021 20:22

Ticket to Ride by the Carpenters. Much sadder than the Beatles version. Always brings a lump to my throat.

Also Aretha Franklin's Until You Come Back To Me.

Jojoanna · 19/01/2021 20:23

Weird one but ,,the folks who live on the hill by Peggy Lee makes me bawl my eyes out

cobblers123 · 19/01/2021 20:26

Another Peggy Lee song, Is That All There Is

Breathmiller · 19/01/2021 20:29

I'm going to have a look through this thread for suggestions so haven't RTFT yet.

I had exactly the same with
"It's all over now, baby blue" by Van Morrison (and many others).
It was on a programme i watched year or two ago. Despite loving Van Morrison I had never heard it and it takes my breath away.

HazelBite · 19/01/2021 20:31

Farewell Angelina by Joan Baez and listen to her singing Silent Night it always floors me at Christmas

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/01/2021 20:32

Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens is an old favourite of mine for this sort of thing. I've sung it at a few funerals and the lyrics are very moving in that situation. Also, he has the most beautiful pure voice.

MrsWonderland · 19/01/2021 20:32

Literally everything by Damien Rice plus:
Creep - Radiohead
Fake plastic Trees - Radiohead
Wings - Birdy
Comforting Sounds - Birdy

And on my current playlist:
Lots of Bon Iver
Stone Cold - Demi Lovato
Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri

TwinkleToesForever · 19/01/2021 20:33

Harvest moon by Neil Young

AtlasPine · 19/01/2021 20:34

‘If it be your will’ by Antony - this is lovely too.

CoffeeRunner · 19/01/2021 20:34

Against All Odds by Phil Collins. I heard it when I was much younger but didn’t really take much notice of it. Heard it again recently & it made me cry.

The other song that makes me cry is Perfect by Ed Sheeran. But I think that’s because it reminds of someone who turned out to be far less than perfect!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 19/01/2021 20:34

Also 'Make You Feel My Love' by Adele.
It was playing in the car on the way to hospital to have my much longed for second child removed from me after a MMC.
I'm crying now, and it's been 10yrs

LickEmbysmiling · 19/01/2021 20:37

Oh slipping through my fingers! What a heart cruncher!!
