A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Slipping through my fingers makes me sob.

WingingItSince1973 · 19/01/2021 18:40

@justoverthehorizon love that song by Amy Mcdonald. The whole album is fab. Brings back some happy memories
Sorry that song has sad memories for you xx

About 2 years ago, New Years Eve I heard Hickory Hollers Tramp by O.C. Smith, blew me away.

We listen to old music A LOT in this house, and I had never heard it before.

Instant reaction.

Beautiful song about a loving mother turning to prostitution after her husband left, leaving her to look after the kids.

Shouldn't I Be With You - CCR, is another that I heard later in life and loved.

teddyclown · 19/01/2021 18:43

Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce. Takes me back.

CheetasOnFajitas · 19/01/2021 18:43

Flowers to all those who have songs that remind them of sad memories, @WingingItSince1973, @ widowed pp whose husband saw Sunshine on Leith.

The ballad of Lucy Jordan by Doctor Hook.

The evening sun shone softly on the eyes of Lucy Jordan.
On the rooftop where she climbed when all the laughter grew too loud.

@paisley256

Forever Autumn- Jeff Wayne. I can even read the lyrics never mind hear it.
This. We had it at my wonderful father in law's funeral and it gets me every time.
Abhannmor · 19/01/2021 18:45

@maddiemookins16mum

Softly as you leave - Matt Monroe. Had it at my mum’s funeral. 😢
I was too hip and cool to appreciate stuff like this - joke. But I was all alone on a night shift once and it came on the radio. He blew me away. What a song and what a voice. Glad there was no one to see me dissolve!
NeedWineNow · 19/01/2021 18:46

@PigWhisperer

Landslide by Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac

Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
I dont know..

Sighhhhhh.

This! I only heard this for the first time whilst WFH when we had the radio on (I think it might have been Absolute Classic Rock) and I immediately downloaded it. Just beautiful.

Talking to DH about this thread he said he cried the first time he heard Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/01/2021 18:47

You’re not right for me - Emilia Mitiku (it was a Radio 2 record of the week about 8 years ago), possibly one of TW’s discoveries before he died.

It’s simply lovely. Well worth a listen.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 19/01/2021 18:49

"Everybody Hurts" by REM was playing on the radio the day after I'd heard someone we knew was pregnant, whilst I was having a mini breakdown a few weeks after having had to go into labour and give birth at 22 weeks because my first baby wasn't able to live.

@MrsDoylesTea

The Dixie Chicks - You Were Mine. For anyone who's ever been cheated on it's a heartbreaker
And The Dixie Chicks Travelling Soldier
BoreOfWhabylon · 19/01/2021 18:49

@Emmylou292

I used to sing Bridge Over Troubled Water to my firstborn. He's 21 now but still has the mind of a baby and never spoken a word in his life.
Flowers to you Emmylou and another Joan Baez song

Iamblossom · 19/01/2021 18:50

We need a spotify thread of these

PigWhisperer · 19/01/2021 18:50

just asked my ASD girl to sing “bridge over troubled water” and she got to the “sail on silver girl” part and I cried. She looked at me blankly, then laughed at me, called me a weirdo and then said she had always wanted to juggle eggs. So she started to juggle eggs.

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 19/01/2021 18:50

Music brings me to tears all the time but these ones in particular

Ordinary lives - The slow show
(It gets me because I am not scared of dying, but I am scared of leaving my quirky son behind)

Fourth of July - Surfjan Stevens
(Many of Surfjan's songs make me cry but this one always does because it's a conversation between him and his mum)

Hold my girl - George Ezra

(Blame Strictly for this Glitterball Cannot hear it without thinking of Caroline Flack)

Build it up - Ingrid Michaelson

MadCatLadee · 19/01/2021 18:52

Wow, what a beautiful song *PeaceLoveAndCandy

AnnieRich · 19/01/2021 18:53

Sand and Water- Beth Nielsen Chapman
Boulder to Birmingham- Emmylou Harris.
Both are achingly beautiful.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 19/01/2021 18:54

Slipping Through My Fingers from the Mama Mia soundtrack (by ABBA originally).
First heard it just after my daughter was born, and thought I had ages to go before we got to that stage. And now I'm there, and it always brings a tear.....

redpickle · 19/01/2021 18:54

@WaxOnFeckOff

Sandy Denny - who knows where the times goes
Yes! This was played at a funeral I attended. I've always found it so moving but even more so now
Iamblossom · 19/01/2021 18:54

@cheetahsonfajitas I'm doing exactly the same

Hall84 · 19/01/2021 18:54

James Taylor, Fire & Rain. It hurts my heart to hear it now after we lost my sister last year.

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 19/01/2021 18:55

in this shirt - the irrepressibles

Sorry, pressed too soon. George Ezra was used as the tribute to Caroline. Ingrid Michaelson moves me. But the song in the link above (last link in previous post) is just gorgeous. Used by Ellie in the greatest dancer and fell in love with it when I first heard it.

LadyGAgain · 19/01/2021 18:55

He ain't heavy, he's my brother. Gets me every time. I have a sister but the sentiment is the same for me.
