A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Oh and Leona Lewis version of “run” gets me every time. I can just about make it to the final chorus but that’s then me done. Floods of tears, every time.

SendHelp30 · 19/01/2021 18:26

@schnubbins yes to I hope you dance ❤️

Gilead · 19/01/2021 18:26

That’s no way To say Goodbye. Leonard Cohen.
I’m going to be making a new playlist with these suggestions!

EddisonTortoise · 19/01/2021 18:27

Abba's Slipping Through My Fingers.

Partly because of how I feel about my daughter and partly because no one felt like that about me.

isthismylifenow · 19/01/2021 18:28

I know it's been mentioned already but I had to do a fair trip today and Sunshine on leith came on. I had tears and I'm not a crier usually. It just really got me today. It's one of the most beautiful songs.

EddisonTortoise · 19/01/2021 18:28

Gilead

Totally agree.

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 18:30

Ahhh so so so many of these I agree with! I won’t repeat them all but keep adding to the list! So emosh. Someone mentioned Elbow and this version of “Friend of Ours” gets me every time!

Waterloo Sunset , The Kinks. Happy , sad , yearning, hopeful and strangely blessed.

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 18:31

Wow that Linkin Park one - I got up to the 3rd line and felt my eyes fill up and had to turn it off.

My offering is Simple Twist of Fate by Bob Dylan.

dinglethedragon · 19/01/2021 18:31

Diamonds and rust makes me cry - not many songs do, but exh and I saw her live many times and it reminds me of good times and how a relationship can turn to rust.

Fabulous song

oakleaffy · 19/01/2021 18:31

@PeaceLoveAndCandy
Oh yes!
Joan Baez... her music was part of my childhood- mum listened to it a lot.

Haven’t heard that song in decades.

“Friday I’m in love” by the Cure had a euphoric effect on me..
I’d been chundering all day with Norovirus, and woke at 3 am with this song on radio and felt better.. Joy!💕

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 19/01/2021 18:33

YY to the PP who said Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Dire Straits - Hand in Hand. Specifically these lyrics:

“Now you and me go parallel, together and apart
And you keep the perfect distance and it’s tearing at my heart
But you never feel the distance, you never try to cross no line”

And a more recent one - Impossible, by Nothing But Thieves. Beautiful song and his voice is amazing.

stuckinthemiddlewithyou1 · 19/01/2021 18:33

@ExitChasedByABear

I’m not usually moved by what I hear but Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and more recently Galaxy by Ladies Code, I just get goosebumps and feel weirdly emotional Blush
Chasing cars. This song was playing in my bf car when her husband was shot and killed in a hijacking. Can’t deal. 🥲
SendHelp30 · 19/01/2021 18:34

@paisley256 which linkin park please?

@stuckinthemiddlewithyou1 oh god that is so, so sad

Ponypizzy · 19/01/2021 18:35

@nuitdesetoiles

Landslide, Fleetwood Mac... Tears every single time.
I just recently ‘discovered’ this song. I’m 50 this year and I’ve listened to Fleetwood Mac on and off over the years but this has really hit me for some reason as if I’d never heard it before.
Hatstrategicallydipped · 19/01/2021 18:36

@SummerHouse

Antony and the Johnsons

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold, when I'm tired

I was haunted by this. I heard it and I was open mouthed, lump in throat, couldn't believe what I was hearing.

@SummerHouse Have you seen this version of that song - it's beautiful (from The Voice UK 2016)

It was the first I had ever heard of the song and played it over and over for about a year!

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 18:36

Forever Autumn- Jeff Wayne. I can even read the lyrics never mind hear it.

Blankscreen · 19/01/2021 18:36

Alcoholic by Stairsailor is a tear jerker

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 19/01/2021 18:37

@Ferrylights

The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. Reminds me of my dad who passed away in Feb, I break down when I hear it
Was just coming on to say the same about my own father, @Ferrylights - except he died in April 1989. The Living Years still has that effect on me now. I'm crying just thinking of it.
WingingItSince1973 · 19/01/2021 18:39

The Promise by Tracey Chapman. Played at my brothers funeral nearly 15 years ago. Was one of his favourite songs. Absolutely makes me sob. He was murdered age 28. Miss him still ❤

CheetasOnFajitas · 19/01/2021 18:39

I think I am going to through this thread and just put every single song on to a playlist!

oohmyback · 19/01/2021 18:40

ABBA slipping through my fingers has really hit me recently. Literally sob every time! My 14 yr old recently came out which I'm fine with but it just feels so grown up!!

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 18:40

Still in love with you - Thin Lizzy
