A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Disturbed do a phenomenal version of Sound of Silence. Can't get to the end without sobbing

@notapizzaeater

I'm just choosing my DH funeral songs, I'm in pieces here 😭😭😭
I'm not sure whether this song has been mentioned, but it's very beautiful.

Jealous of the Angels - Donna Taggart

Flowers Sorry for your loss.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 19/01/2021 18:58

Bridge Over Troubled Water- my dad used to sing to me. He really meant it too. Lovely man

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt in my opinion is the saddest song in the world ever.

A lot of 60s/70s soul classics remind me of my mum and dad's beautiful relationship and make me sob: Best thing that ever happened to me by Gladys Knight and the Pips, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack

Hope There's Someone by Anthony and the Johnsons makes me cry too. So so lonely.

Inastatus · 19/01/2021 18:59

@secretrugbyfan - just clicked on the ‘Ken Lee’ clip 😂 I’m crying 🤣

Fix you coldplay
100 years five for fighting
Angels Sarah mclachlan
10,000 miles from that film about geese

Smokeybacon72 · 19/01/2021 19:00

My beloved wife by Natalie Merchant sets me off every time I listen to it, as does her version of hello in there

Minniem2020 · 19/01/2021 19:01

X ambassadors-unsteady. Probably because it makes me think of the film Me before you, then I'm a wreck.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/01/2021 19:03

Oh I forgot Toni Child’s House of Hope, beautiful song.

NeedWineNow · 19/01/2021 19:03

@FuzzyPuffling

Morningtown Ride by The Seekers.

Yes this. I used to sing it to my unborn granddaughter in utero. Sadly she was stillborn. I hope she heard me.

Oh and pretty much anything by Tracy Chapman, it's just her amazing voice

Hatstrategicallydipped · 19/01/2021 19:04

This is sort of my theme tune along with The Ballad of Lucy Jordan mentioned already (incidentally, I think she - Marianne Faithful also dated Bob Dylan?).

Anyway, this is my theme song for my life thus far and probably is the theme song of a lot of mothers at times! It's probably well known, but I identify strongly with the lyrics as I've both risen to the top and been in the gutter.

Never Been to Me - Charlene

I think it was her only hit!

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/01/2021 19:04

I got my Toni Child’s songs mixed up! It’s I’ve got to go now that makes me cry.

Benjispruce2 · 19/01/2021 19:05

Chance by Big Country doesn’t make me cry but is melancholic and always gives me a chill. Great guitar and voice.

NeedWineNow · 19/01/2021 19:06

Such beautiful songs on this thread. I am definitely going to make a playlist.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 19/01/2021 19:06

Simon and Garfunkel’s America and, from the same album, Bookends (version with lyrics):
Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, A time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you

Also the haunting and beautiful Polegnala E Todora (Love Chant) by The Bulgarian State TV and Radio Female Voice Choir.

CottonSock · 19/01/2021 19:08

This happened to me with Never grow up.

MaddieElla · 19/01/2021 19:09

Taylor Swift - Never Grow Up. Absolute floods every time. I know when my DD goes to University this year that this song will floor me.

"Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room
Memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home
Remember the footsteps, remember the words said
And all your little brother's favorite songs"

😭

@SleepingStandingUp

Spiegel im spiegel - Arvo Part. A piano piece. I heard this years ago on the radio, loved it but missed the name and couldn't find it. Alexa randomly played it the other day so now it's on my most played. It's stunning

Wires by Athlete. Has heard it but suddenly HEARD it one day and it made me sob. I love it.

It's so easy to not hear the words of songs

is that piece. It is beautiful and even more moving is the comments below. This song unites everyone in love and grief.
MaddieElla · 19/01/2021 19:11

Also another vote for Johnny Cash and Hurt.

If you know his life and his history, that one really hits the spot. The video makes me weep.

jarviscockatiel · 19/01/2021 19:12

So you don't have to love me anymore by Alan Jackson always brings a lump to my throat

fiftyval · 19/01/2021 19:13

The songs which always bring a tear to my eye are:-
17 by Janice Ian
Blackbird -Beatles
Whole of the Moon - Waterboys
Took a boat Sunday - Supertramp
Ne me quitte pas - Jacques Brel

2018SoFarSoGreat · 19/01/2021 19:15

So many of these.

For me Vocci by Zucchero and Fidelity by Regina Spektor. Both make me think of lost loved ones, and the pain of that loss is so fresh whenever they play.

orangecinnamon · 19/01/2021 19:15
