I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

@AtlasPine

I love Sunshine in Leith by the Proclaimers - it makes me tear up in a happy way.
I love the Hibs football crowd singing this. Very moving.

Wires by Athlete. My 4yr old DD was having emergency surgery. It sums it all up and takes me straight there every time. Luckily she fully recovered.

Ironmanrocks · 19/01/2021 18:03

I haven't read all of these as I'm cooking dinner, but another Harry Nilsson song - Gotta Get up.....it's in the Netflix series Russian Doll. It's stunning. Didn't know him at all - the song mentioned in this thread early on is naff though!! Grin but he also wrote Everybody's talking'....love that song too!

Benjispruce2 · 19/01/2021 18:04

Oh @DaphneBridgerton. Every time. So gorgeous and moving. Just the opening and I’m done!

Also, Silence by Dave Thomas Junior which I think is utterly breathtaking www.youtube.com/results?search_query=silence+dave+thomas+junior+lyrics

Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, gets me every time.

"Oats in the water" by Ben Howard. Heard it a couple of years ago and sort of skidded to a halt.

"Let her go" by Passenger was playing in the car just before the Vet came out to tell me to bring the best cat who ever lived (I appreciate views may differ on this) in to the surgery to be put to sleep. The lyric "only know you love her when you let her go" was literally playing as the Vet tapped on the window. I'm struggling not to cry thinking about it.

Some of the music in The Handmaids Tale sound track. Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby by Cigarettes After Sex, Mom's Got Work/He's Alive by Adam Taylor to name but a few.

Also

Nimrod: enigma variations played by brass band. I played in a brass band for nearly 20 years and this brings back many bittersweet memories.

My best friend died when we were 15. They played the scientist by Coldplay at her funeral and I’ve never listened to it since.

The Killers - Be Still For when I need a little word with myself
What a beautiful song!

Sunshine on Leith makes me sob, but mainly because it reminds me of going to the theatre to see the play with DH when we knew he was dying, and he told me that the scene where they sing this song had made him realise how difficult it must be for me knowing I was going to be widowed before I was 40. I can't listen to it now without that memory coming to the fore.

Cancer by My Chemical Romance is awfully sad, written from the point of view of a cancer patient at end of life.

Autumnchill · 19/01/2021 18:15

I'm loving Lissie, When I'm Alone and can't stop listening to Bonfire Heart, James Blunt, just the line 'days like these lead to nights like this' takes me back to days as a carefree young adult when you had no plans, you just kind of saw how the day panned out, always the best days.

Going to listen to a few of these recommendations and see if I can expand on my playlist

Tara336 · 19/01/2021 18:16

We have all the time in the world by Louis Armstrong gets me sobbing every time

Autumnchill · 19/01/2021 18:17

@Benjispruce2 I think I played that over and over and when I first heard it, beautiful. Iron Sky was the same

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/01/2021 18:20

An Ending (Ascent) by Brian Eno and Outro by M83 also stop me in my tracks. For quite a long time in the case of the Brian Eno song! 😄
