A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Try Danny Come Home by Nana Mouskouri.

wellthatsunusual · 19/01/2021 17:20

And I also second (or third or fourth) Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.

Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle

Hallelujah. I was with my beloved dad in the hospice and went into the mezzanine to get a cup of tea. Someone in the lobby was playing it on the piano and it echoed around the building then just stopped and drifted away. It was glorious and desperately sad.

Song To The Siren, This Mortal Coil version. First heard it in the film Lost Highway and told anyone who’d listen that it was phenomenal. It really is.

Mist Covered Mountains from the Local Hero soundtrack. It just transports me home to Scotland and is achingly beautiful. www.google.co.uk/search?q=mist+covered+mountains+local+hero&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

Moments of Pleasure by Kate Bush.

There are so many beautiful Kate Bush songs but this has some lines that are so poignant; “He meets us at the lift, like Douglas Fairbanks. Waving his walking stick. But he isn’t well at all” in particular. The part at the end where she’s addressing loved ones who have died;
Hey there, Maureen
And hey there, Bubba
Dancing down the aisle of a 'plane
S'Murph, playing his guitar refrain
Hey there, Teddy
Spinning in the chair at Abbey Road
Hey there, Michael
Do you really love me?
Hey there, Bill
Could you turn the lights up?

I can't do Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel since I had children.

When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I'll dry them all
I'm on your side
Oh, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Emmylou292 · 19/01/2021 17:23

I used to sing Bridge Over Troubled Water to my firstborn.
He's 21 now but still has the mind of a baby and never spoken a word in his life.

There's two for me and they both remind me of my dad. The first I heard when Dad was dying. The Decemberists - Don't carry it all.

The words are all about supporting one another and when my dad was dying I don't know how we would have survived without the support of "neighbours" - family and friends who made us meals, drove me to the hospital, cared for my mum so I could be with dad.

The line that stood out to me "return this quiet searcher to the soil" and that summed up my father completely.

And you must bear your neighbors burden within reason
And your labors will be borne when all is done, and nobody nobody knows
Let the yoke fall from our shoulders
Don't carry it all don't carry it all
We are all our hands in holders
Beneath this bold and brilliant sun.

My sons both loved it and played it a lot when dad died which was hard but lovely in a way.

The other one I heard on the radio in the car and sat and cried for ages afterwards unable to move. Dan Fogleberg - Leader of the Band.

My dad was not a musician but the song described him so well.

"His gentle means of sculpting souls took me years to understand"
"My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band."

Jordan by Rival Sons always gets me:

The wolves look to the moon
And the ocean to the sky
I've looked to you my whole life
Now I have to say goodbye

But to say that I've lost you
It's such a selfish thing to say
I've never seen nothing as beautiful
As watching you slip away

I'd rather see you go in the arms of your angels
Than to keep you right here with me
I'll meet you on the other side of the Jordan
Now let your soul go free

You did it all with feeling
And failure, you took it gracefully
You said third star to the right
And straight on until morning
When you need me, you know
That's where I'll be

Now the rest of my life without you
Right now it's hard to conceive
You said, don't cry for me now
You've got to remember
There is no death for those that believe

AtlasPine · 19/01/2021 17:25

This is the Leonard Cohen which catches my breath - it’s so haunting:

We had that for our wedding. We'd had 20 really hard years together at that point.

And the lyrics of the LC song:

It seems so long ago
Nancy was alone
Looking at the late, late show
Through a semi-precious stone
In the House of Honesty
Her father was on trial
In the House of Mystery
There was no one at all
There was no one at all
It seems so long ago
None of us were strong
Nancy wore green stockings
And she slept with everyone
She never said she'd wait for us
Although she was alone
I think she fell in love for us
In nineteen sixty one
In nineteen sixty one
It seems so long ago
Nancy was alone
A forty five beside her head
An open telephone
We told her she was beautiful
We told her she was free
But none of us would meet her in
The House of Mystery
The House of Mystery
And now you look around you
See her everywhere
Many use her body
Many comb her hair
In the hollow of the night
When you are cold and numb
You hear her talking freely then
She's happy that you've come
She's happy that you've come

Blackcountryexile · 19/01/2021 17:27

Make You Feel My Love by Adele and The Best Day by Taylor Swift.
Reminds me of my DD's going off to university.
I am happy they are living independent lives now but I miss having them with us and seeing them every day.

StepOutOfLine · 19/01/2021 17:27

Diamonds and Rust is so raw.
Bob was such a twat to her.

Janis Ian 17 is a good one.

KeeefBurtain · 19/01/2021 17:29

These are the days of our lives by Queen always gets me too.

Mine is Dont Give Up by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
Every time it gets me
I have a lot of new things to listen to from this thread. But wow, Arvo Part. Just perfection.

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 19/01/2021 17:33

Sometimes by James, it's not a typical love song but something about it makes me catch my breath and get wistful.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 19/01/2021 17:33

First time ever I saw your face - Roberta Flack

This was our first dance at our wedding.

DH has recently been very ill and has spent some time in ITU - this came on when I was really at my rock bottom..

I just sat there and bawled..

TheQueenRaven · 19/01/2021 17:35

@QueenOfPain

I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie.

Incredibly beautiful lyrics about dying.

It's beautiful @QueenOfPain, i discovered it when I heard
Bitbusyattheminute · 19/01/2021 17:35

I used to sing puff the magic dragon to the dc when they were little. Played the full version one night and had to stop, as dc1, who must have been about 5, was in floods.

A lot depends on the mood I'm in. When I first heard slipping through my fingers, it got to me. Used to use it to teach a poem and used to have to warn the kids that I might have a moment.

The Tom Waits one, Long Way Home.

openthewineplease · 19/01/2021 17:37

In the ghetto - Elvis
Coat of may colours - Dolly Parton

Both give me goose bumps
