Be honest... do you think being a size 10 is more attractive than a size 14?

Just that... no offence intended it's just to settle an argument I'm interested in people's views. Let's say specifically you have an average / reasonably attractive looking woman of average height, do you think she will look better as a size 10 than she does a 14?

I’d consider it to be extremely rare to be a size 10 and clinically underweight.

This is absolutely nonsense.

I was a ten with a BMI of 22.

ProudAuntie76 · 14/01/2021 11:45

And I’m bob on 5”5. I’m a size 10 at 9 stone 9 which is a really healthy weight and not at all skinny.

Branleuse · 14/01/2021 11:46

my face looks better at a 14, but my arse looks better as a 10

Zenithbear · 14/01/2021 11:46

I'm 5ft 5 and a 10. I look slim but not too thin and have a decent bust, shapely legs etc. I would be too fat and look overweight as a 14.

?!

You’ve proved my point.

A BMI of 20-25 is ideal. What’s underweight about a bmi of 22?

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/01/2021 11:48

@PurpleDaisies, surely your example reinforces the bolded claim? BMI22 is in the middle of healthy/normal range, nowhere near ‘clinically underweight’. Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 14/01/2021 11:49

I’ve misread your post @ProudAuntie76. This is one where heating it out loud would help.

I thought you meant it was rare to be a size 10, and if you were you would be clinically underweight. I see what you mean now! Blush

ProudAuntie76 · 14/01/2021 11:49

Clinically underweight begins at BMI 18.5 for reference.

@Changi

It's fashion to be stick thin and believe it's a good look. Many historical paintings show it was once very fashionable to be curvy.

They could be showing that the people who could afford to be painted were mostly fat.

But if it was fashionable to be thin, the painter would have painted them that way regardless of reality. Portrait painters are notorious for pleasing their subject.

Different shapes and sizes go in and out of fashion and women comply. At the turn of the last century an exaggerated hourglass was in vogue, move on 25 years and flappers were straight up and down. In the 1950s curvy women were in fashion, move on a decade and Twiggy was the ideal.

There’s probably more latitude to be your natural size and shape now than ever before - or there would be if women weren’t so judgemental of each other.

Snowvid19 · 14/01/2021 11:57

I’m usually a 10 but am currently about a 14 after having DD two months ago. My boobs are amazing, and I love the curve from my waist to my hips. My bum is lovely and curvy. I’m lucky in the way that my weight distributes. I’m looking forward to being a bit lighter as it will improve my running, and I want to regain some muscle. But tbh I don’t think look any less attractive this size.

Changi · 14/01/2021 11:58

Interesting. Right now the average U.K. woman is 5ft 5in tall but a size 16. So a size 14 probably looks fine as it is slimmer than average. A size 10 might be too thin unless she is an athlete and so is pure muscle

Just because something is average or normal, doesn't necessarily make it desirable. According to Cancer Research UK 63% of UK are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese is normal, but not in a good way.

If I was a size 16, the UK norm, I would resemble a Michelin man.

Changi · 14/01/2021 11:59

That should say '63% of UK adults are overweight or obese.

I have been both sizes. Currently the bigger size. Yes I personally do find size 10 more attractive. Healthier also.

It’s not either or, you can simultaneously be slim and curvy. Curvy doesn’t mean big everywhere, it means an hourglass or pear shaped figure. Slim people can still have wide hips and a small waist - that’s not exclusive to size 14 and above women.

Interesting you say that. I reckon as a slightly overweight size 14, I am probably fitter than the average person on the street. I’m willing to bet I could outrun/cycle/lift most average size 10 women. I wouldn’t necessarily say size is a good indication of health.

I know. Sad, isn’t it? It’s a good thing men don’t judge us so harshly or the human race would be extinct by now!

Weight is a very good indication of health. The larger the person the more strain their joints and hearts are having to endure during exercise. The more fat, especially visceral fat, the higher the odds of cancer, diabetes and other illnesses go up. Being overweight and still exercising and training is great but a size 10 woman doing the same will be likely be biologically healthier than a size 14.

TheMarzipanDildo · 14/01/2021 12:17

Re Marilyn Monroe. Her weight fluctuated a lot and at her largest (still slim) her measurements are those of an OLD STYLE size 14-16 (which is where the myth comes from). I’m a size 10 but the dress patterns that fit me are 14s. I think she had quite a small bone structure and her waist was invariably minuscule.

Exactly. Curvy is a shape not a size. I am curvier at a 6/8 than a 10.

It was also fashionable back then to be deathly pale and dark skin was discriminated against as it was assumed you were a manual labourer who spent time on the sun . Why on earth should we look to the past as an example of good practice? Things were awful back then and women wore corsets so tight they’d faint due to lack of oxygen!!

LarryUnderwood · 14/01/2021 12:33

It is all so subjective. I am relatively lucky in that, although I gain weight easily, I gain it evenly. So all of me gets a bit fatter or thinner rather than just my hips etc. That means that I can gain a good 10 or more pounds without changing sizes or looking much different. But it also means that if I have a lot to lose I won't change much in terms of how I look until I lose a significant amount. And it means that in terms of health my bmi etc might be a lot worse than I look. I have a fairly small frame and have never ever been stick thin, even when I weighed 8.5 stone (in my 20s). Slim yes. Small, yes. But skinny - bony, sharp elbows, visible breastbone, thigh gap, knobbly knees. Never ever. But that is my build.

Please don't make me hide the Chat Topic as well. Weight loss chat is freely available, without asking and inviting all the fat shamers, frothing under the pretence of 'health, innit'. Hmm

I look good at 10 and 14. I’m currently a lot bigger. I don’t look good now.

No-one forced you to open the thread though.

And this thread isn't about weightloss.
