Be honest... do you think being a size 10 is more attractive than a size 14?

Just that... no offence intended it's just to settle an argument I'm interested in people's views. Let's say specifically you have an average / reasonably attractive looking woman of average height, do you think she will look better as a size 10 than she does a 14?

Entirely subjective. I think I look better at 10 and below, DH definitely thinks I look better at 14 and above.

unmarkedbythat · 14/01/2021 12:44

That said, though, I thoroughly dislike what happens to my bosom when I am on the lighter end of the scale.

HitsAndMrs · 14/01/2021 12:53

It depends where they carry the weight, if it all tummy then I'd say no but Kelly Brook for example (she probably not a 14 to be fair) but for example, a woman like her carries weight in all the right places and looks incredible.

I think how you dress makes a difference. I think Alison Hammond looks great because she dresses great, nothing to do with her weight.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 14/01/2021 12:59

I think it depends on people's frame and where they carry fat. I have small back (size32-34 in a bra) and tiny shoulders so look fat once I'm into the realms of size 14 upwards (currently a 16 and feel very lumpen.)

I have a friend with a broader back and shoulders and she still looks pretty trim at size 14.

TheBuffster · 14/01/2021 13:08

Size 10 is a healthy weight on most people.
Not dangerous and skinny what nonsense.
I am currently a size 14 and whilst I know it's not me at my best, I'm not yet obese.
Historically it was only the rich who were able to be day, that's why it was desirable. Similar to pale skin being desirable as it meant you weren't working the fields.
Now being slim is the privilege of the wealthy, which is why things have flipped.
I mean gout used to be a really fashionable illness.
A healthy BMI should be fine for anyone.
Sizes 8-16 probably but not exclusively or always.

Empressofthemundane · 14/01/2021 13:09

I think the point is that it depends upon your height and build. And ultimately, it’s all subjective anyway.

Rapunzel91 · 14/01/2021 13:10

Mostly yes, if you're tall not necessarily. I'm 5"3 and a size 12-14 and working on getting down to a size 8-10. I would look a lot better and would feel healthier in my body

Cameleongirl · 14/01/2021 13:14

@WiseOwlRelaxing

just seen this upthread

Her details were recorded on a Blue Book Modelling Agency card. Including her height and weight: 5'6" and 8st 8lbs with a 25" waist. That was a US 12 then. She would be UK 6 or 8 now. She was 3lbs lighter at the time of her death.

I’m really confused now. I’m British living in the US. I wear size 4/6 here and I’m an 8/10 in the UK.

American sizes use smaller numbers, a 12 here is pretty big.

mistermagpie · 14/01/2021 13:17

I have a bmi of about 19 and am a size 10, I am tall though and have a large frame.

I'm very in proportion (lucky genes) so don't look hugely different even at 2 stone heavier, which would take me to a 14. I don't mind my body so much at that weight but my face looks puffy and not very nice to my eye.

It's really subjective though, people are unique and look different at different weights and sizes. On the whole though I personally find slimmer people more attractive, but nobody needs to care about what I think.

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants

Please don't make me hide the Chat Topic as well. Weight loss chat is freely available, without asking and inviting all the fat shamers, frothing under the pretence of 'health, innit'. Hmm
No one's 'making' you do anything. If you consider discussion of weight and size to be 'fatshaming' then that's your problem.

But it wasn't in 1945 when that card was written!

The question was which do people think is more attractive.

Maybe just hide this thread.

@cushioncovers

I've always thought curves not obesity which I am are more attractive rather than a stick thin figure.
When I was young and what would probably be a size 6 now, I still had curves.

A size 10 is not skinny for most people ( if you are six feet tall it may be), it is just slim and most women have curves, unless they have a very straight up and down body type.

It really annoys me when curvy is used to mean overweight/fat, when apart from people who are very underweight, for whatever reason, most women have curves, whatever their size. Curvy can mean Marilyn Monroe or the Michelin man, both had curves.

PugInTheHouse · 14/01/2021 14:00

Over 5ft 7 size 14 probably looks better, under that then it can look quite big IMO.

I am 5ft4 and 12/14, I definitely look chubby now. Size 10/12 is good on me.

Empressofthemundane · 14/01/2021 14:02

As for Marilyn Monroe, there are lots of different stats, some of which were simply marketing hype at the time. Nothing ever changes. Here is what she looked like.

TheBuffster · 14/01/2021 14:02

Some of us can never be curvy. We just go stick slim fat and never curvy!

MrsAvocet · 14/01/2021 14:05

Sizes have definitely changed over the years. I have a lot of vintage clothes and I would say that I typically wear vintage items that are labelled 1 or occasionally 2 sizes bigger than my "modern" size. But there is no consistency really - either in vintage or modern sizing. I've got items in my wardrobe labelled between 8 and 14 that all fit me quite well!

Changi · 14/01/2021 14:16

There are different stats because her size went up and down. At her heaviest she apparently hit 140 lbs.

Some good info here...

This is what she looked like at 120.

Stating that a healthy weight is more attractive because generally it indicates better health is not fat shaming.

By that reasoning the research showing that overweight people are more likely to develop heart disease/cancer/die from COVID is then also fat shaming.

Isn't evolution a fat shaming bastard Hmm

zoomzoomzoomhey · 14/01/2021 14:50

I would say a size 10 is more attractive too. I have always felt better at my smallest.

Having said that, I have seen some women look absolutely amazing at size 14. I think it depends on where the weight gets carried. I think if it goes to the hips, bum, boobs then a size 14 can look great.

QueenOfPain · 14/01/2021 14:58

Always amazed that at 6ft tall the lower end of my healthy BMI category is 10st 3lbs, as I would be positively skeletal and cachexic looking at that weight.

I don’t know if I could ever even by a size ten on the bottom due to the width of my pelvis. The closest I’ve been to that size was around the age of 14 (wasn’t quite 6ft then) and I looked incredibly slender, my neck was super thing and long and my head looked enormous. I used to wear baggy boys skater jeans right on my (very visible) hipbones then and still wore a 32” (from memory).

Norwayreally · 14/01/2021 15:10

When I’m a size 10 everyone says I look emaciated. I’m 5 ft 7 so not extremely tall but I have an hourglass figure so quite curvy with a small waist. When I lose so much to make me fit in size 10 my butt goes quite flat and I lose my breasts almost entirely. Size 12 is about right for me.

ChelseeDagger · 14/01/2021 15:13

After a certain age a size ten always looks ageing. wrinkles, jowls and wizened necks are not a good look.

This age is about fifty/fifty five imho and you need a bit of padding in your face so a size ten would be ageing unless you were particularly short and a petite build.

murbblurb · 14/01/2021 15:15

female clothing sizes are random, because we are all assumed to be dumbos who enjoy endless shopping and trying on. Men get real measurements for clothes.

anyone who worries about clothing size is falling for the 'you are dumb' message. Please don't.

unmarkedbythat · 14/01/2021 15:18

Oh no, not the dreaded aging. S&B is always doing "what ages you" threads and apparently bloody everything does according to someone.

I am a human being, I will age, getting older is nothing to be ashamed of.
