Be honest... do you think being a size 10 is more attractive than a size 14?

Just that... no offence intended it's just to settle an argument I'm interested in people's views. Let's say specifically you have an average / reasonably attractive looking woman of average height, do you think she will look better as a size 10 than she does a 14?

Depends on her age, face, hair, teeth, body proportions. You have to show photos to get real opinions.
Fat is never a good look no matter the actual clothes size.

Empressofthemundane · 14/01/2021 11:02

It depends upon a persons height and build.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/01/2021 11:04

Different people have different builds and shapes.

I'm a short pear shape at 8-10. I have some curves and a muscular build, certainly on the lower half, and am far from "skinny" with no aspiration to be either. Weight gain goes to my mum tum, bum and thighs with a bit on my face. Very little on my bust to balance me out. I look tubby easily, and am only ever a good dinner away from a pregnancy rumour Grin

My friend has a very curvy hour glass shape and would struggle to get below a well-cut 14, but she looks great, balanced and strong. 14-16-18 suits her very well and it would not be worth the effort to reach a 10.

Most people look best with a decent layer of healthy muscle and fat distribution. Too much or too little doesn't do anyone favours and it doesn't translate neatly into a particular clothes size.

ProudAuntie76 · 14/01/2021 11:06

@Russellbrandshair

Ive never seen anyone who is a size 10 and “stick thin

I havent either. I'm a 36D and size 10- thats hardly "stick thin" or without curves lol

Lol, I relate...these boobs have been 34DD since my teens...they ain’t going nowhere even though I hate them!
Russellbrandshair · 14/01/2021 11:08

@proudauntie76

Yeah me too! Ive had these boobs since age 14. I hated them all through my teen hood and used to wear baggy tops to hide them but now Ive grown to love them.

ladypete · 14/01/2021 11:09

Yes.

Empressofthemundane · 14/01/2021 11:11

I grew up partly in Latin America. 35 years ago women there didn’t want to be too thin. Being pleasantly plump was desirable. There was very little actual obesity. A full curvy figure was prized, but not a huge flabby one.
A lot of women fretted about being bony, straight, having no bum, etc.

I think with globalisation the standard is now much thinner.

On the other hand, I remember reading about an academic who studied data from Google to see what people really thought about all sorts of things when they had the total privacy of an internet search no one would see. One big discovery was that a lot of men want to see pictures and porn featuring fuller figures. The implication was that men might like to be seen on the arm of a high fashion model for reasons of social status, but their true desire was something more like Marylin Monroe, May West, Kim Kardashian.

VinylDetective · 14/01/2021 11:11

@randomer

Everyone looks better slim

Really?

Of course they don’t. That’s like saying everyone looks better blonde or everyone looks better with pink lipstick.

I was a size ten in old money once, so that much vaunted six or eight today. I looked awful, you could see all the bones in my upper chest, I had no tits and my cheeks were sunken. My optimum size is a current 12 or small 14. Older women need a bit of fat.

PurpleDaisies · 14/01/2021 11:16

That sounds more than just slim @VinylDetective

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 14/01/2021 11:16

A full curvy figure was prized, but not a huge flabby one

But this REALLY depends on your personal distribution of fat which noone can control.

As I said up thread, when I put weight on it does NOT go to my breasts or my butt, I wish it did, but it goes straight to my face/chin and my tummy- making me look bloated, double chin and puffy. Thats why I look better slimmer. i'm jealous of those who put weight on and get lovely boobs, a nice butt with still a relatively flat stomach but thats not what happens to me.

PurpleDaisies · 14/01/2021 11:18

Exactly the same as me. All the zoom calls at the start of lockdown one constantly looking at my face made me realise I needed to change my diet and exercise habits.

Bilgepumper · 14/01/2021 11:19

It's fashion to be stick thin and believe it's a good look. Many historical paintings show it was once very fashionable to be curvy.

hahaha! yes. I think we all do this on zoom calls- spend most of the time looking at ourselves lol

Empressofthemundane · 14/01/2021 11:22

It’s true. Some people are very lucky about where extra weight gets distributed.

That’s why whether being a size 10 or 14 is better depends upon individual height and build.

Ballerina types and cross-fitters both look good, no?

Changi · 14/01/2021 11:22

They could be showing that the people who could afford to be painted were mostly fat.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2021 11:27

@VinylDetective are you confusing slim with extremely skinny?

IamTomHanks · 14/01/2021 11:27

I've got quite an hour glass figure at 12-14 that's not there at a 10 or below. So I would say I personally look better at a 12-14.

QueenPawPaws · 14/01/2021 11:30

It's funny... I can be really self conscious of my stomach and harsh on myself
Yet on men, I genuinely don't notice. I've dated thin men and fat men and in between and mostly think god his eyes are gorgeous or his arms with rolled up sleeves Blush
Don't care what size they are unless I'm buying clothes for them and need to know 🤷🏽‍♀️

Luckyelephant1 · 14/01/2021 11:35

I'm petite with a very slight build and slight features. Chest and bum pretty much flat lol. If I was a size 14 I would look obese or heavily pregnant as all the weight would go to my belly and face. For me size 6-8 is optimum, 8 is fine but 10 and beyond you can tell in my face that I look unhealthy and bloated. Another chin starts to appear when size 8 becomes too tight on me so that's my upper limit.

However a tall, curvy person with ample boobs/bum and a proportional figure would probably look way better as a 14 and unhealthy/shrunken as a size 10.

Personally though regardless of build, I think most people any larger than size 14 look unhealthy.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/01/2021 11:37

Interesting. Right now the average U.K. woman is 5ft 5in tall but a size 16. So a size 14 probably looks fine as it is slimmer than average. A size 10 might be too thin unless she is an athlete and so is pure muscle. I would think size 14 or 10 could be equally attractive or equally unattractive.

PlanDeRaccordement · 14/01/2021 11:40

Depends on whether you are looking at historical portraits of rich women who through enforced idleness, tended to be fat, or historical portraits of working women such as this shepherdess.

Don’t think so. People who are a size six or eight - which is what I was - are throwing their toys out of their prams when they’re described as skinny. All I’m saying is it really didn’t suit me.

ProudAuntie76 · 14/01/2021 11:43

“Average” doesn’t equate to healthy.

From a medical perspective, I’m well into the overweight category at a 12. At 16, I’d easily be obese.

I’d consider it to be extremely rare to be a size 10 and clinically underweight.

A size 16 “average” is really nothing to aspire to and with the size 16 label is likely to come vastly increased chances of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The closer you are to ideal weight for your height, the lower those chances get.

stayathomer · 14/01/2021 11:44

I’m surprised anyone could look “skeletal” at a size 10. It’s a perfectly normal size to be.
Depends on your age, at over 40 a size 10 person's face can look drawn and 'skeletal'. Plus it totally depends on the person, different people wear different sizes differently

A 5’5” size 10 is too thin unless they are an athlete or extraordinarily well muscled?! What a bizarre notion! I’m a size 12, so no skin in that game but come on... Confused
