Be honest... do you think being a size 10 is more attractive than a size 14?

Just that... no offence intended it's just to settle an argument I'm interested in people's views. Let's say specifically you have an average / reasonably attractive looking woman of average height, do you think she will look better as a size 10 than she does a 14?

She was a 10 or less? I thought she was curvy?

IcedPurple · 13/01/2021 23:00

@Cameleongirl

I thought Marilyn Munroe was at least a size 12, possibly larger, and considered gorgeous.

Even today with people more aware of healthy weights, I can’t imagine that she wouldn’t be considered very attractive.

Marilyn was tiny. She was probably about a size 8 in contemporary dress sizes.
katnyps · 13/01/2021 23:00

I think height plays a big role - 5' 10" at size 14 and you'll probably look similar to a 5' 0" size 10 in actual proportions!

Cameleongirl · 13/01/2021 23:00

Ok, ignore me. I thought she was voluptuous for some reason!

The dresses she wore are still around and can be measured - she was tiny. Granted, she would have worn heavy duty corsets which could have shrunk her waist by a few inches, but she was still very slim.
CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/01/2021 23:02

I don't really know how clothes sizes work for average sized/height people. I'm 5'10 and hourglass and at a 14 I was just right whereas at 12 I was on the gaunt side and at 10 I would be pretty skeletal.

CorianderBee · 13/01/2021 23:03

Marilyn Monroe was not a size 12 by modern standards. A size 8 in the 60s is a 16 now.

She had a 35 bust and a 22 waist. Yes a 22inch waist!

Thecherryontheverytop · 13/01/2021 23:11

I'm short and my face shape is weird and I look really bad when I'm carrying extra weight. I was a size 14 and it did not suit my face at all. My body wasn't as bad but I definitely look better at a size 10. My 6 foot friend however looks gaunt and thin at a 12 to 14 so it depends.

CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS · 13/01/2021 23:12

I've been size 8 - 16. Currently a 14 and am far too fat. I look best at about a 10. Harder to lose weight now I'm older though.

m0therofdragons · 13/01/2021 23:13

size 8 in the 60s is a 16 now.

Size 8s in the 60 were slim so don’t talk nonsense. There may have been some changes but my mum still has her size 8 clothes from the 60s and they fit me pre kids even I was an 8. Size 8 was and still is slim.

Enko · 13/01/2021 23:13

for me I look better as a 12/14 when I have dropped to a 10/12 I am always asked if I am sick and people are worried about me.

Doyouavocado · 13/01/2021 23:15

1 million percent yes

imalmosthere · 13/01/2021 23:23

No - you could be a really pretty, attractive 18 and a terrible looking 6 - there are 100000 more factors in being attractive than a label size.

Katinski · 13/01/2021 23:28

I'm slim, always have been. Never dieted, spect it's because the sweet gene just passed me by?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 13/01/2021 23:28

Yes.

OrangePlumGrape · 13/01/2021 23:30

Yes

mayandjuniper · 13/01/2021 23:30

Generally, but not always. I look terrible at a size 12 because my weight goes to my stomach and face so I lose any prettiness and look pregnant.

In the 60s measurements were often taken with corsets or garters on. When I wear even a mildly supportive corset my waist size decreases by 3 inches - I imagine it would decrease by 4-6 or more in a more traditional type they used to wear back then.
GypsyLee · 13/01/2021 23:31

It depends some women look attractive a little larger, perhaps the top end of their maximum weight for height.
I'm like that, I'm mid to top end of recommended.
I'd look and would be ill the weight of the bottom end.
Marylyn Monroe was a size 16, I suppose 14 now.
Was she average height.

dottiedaisee · 13/01/2021 23:35

I work with mainly females in their 50s .I am guessing we are all sized between 14 to 22 ...we all look fabulous 💕

MrDarcysMa · 13/01/2021 23:35

I'll have a 10 body but with a 14 arse please Grin

hopsalong · 13/01/2021 23:38

Yes. A 10 is not thin any more. A modern 14 is fat.

This did not used to be the case, but it is now. In most shops in now an 8, in my 40s. As a toned teenager I was a 12/14. I have been the same weight for my entire life (low end of normal BMI but not underweight, and I'm 5'9'').

I don't think an old-fashioned 10 is more attractive than a 14. A lot of women look better at a modern size 12 than as a size 8. (I am completely flat-chested, for a start.) But anyone short of 6 feet (maybe?) is overweight if they need to buy a size 14.

MrsAvocet · 13/01/2021 23:39

Over the last 12 months I have shed around 3 stone and dropped from a 14, verging on 16 back to a 10. I feel much better and I definitely look better too. I'm embarrassed to look at photos of myself at my fatest. But I'm short, so even a few extra pounds make me look really dumpy. I've got tall friends who I think would look terrible if they were size 10. There's a lot more to physical attractiveness than dress size.

Worried234 · 13/01/2021 23:39

Yes.

stayathomer · 13/01/2021 23:42

Nope, I honestly thing different weights suit different people. I know a number of people who have lost so much weight and I really really dont think it suits them. And as someone said above, miserable and slimmer is no way to be!!
