I’ve never had avocado

Around Christmas time there was a thread about what Christmas food people couldn’t get enough of and I remember stollen was very popular. So off I went to my local supermarket and picked up a bag of mini stollen bites... didn’t really like them but glad I tried them.

Now more to the point, a lot of people bang on about avocado on toast. I’ve never tasted avocado so before I go out and buy one only to dislike it I was wondering if anyone would be able to describe what it tastes like x

Mushy grass

WitchQueenofDarkness · 10/01/2021 23:32

Pure heaven.

I could happily live on avocado. The smaller darker ones have a better flavour than the large green ones which can be a bit insipid

echt · 10/01/2021 23:34

Lovely. One of the upsides of lockdown in Melbourne and the subsequent closing of eateries was the drop in the price of avocadoes.

Imagine a savoury, slightly unripe banana, if you can 😂 Similar texture, quite a mild flavour, tastes slightly oily/buttery, a small bit nutty, and quite... I wanna say grassy? But in a good way.

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:34

Very conflicting responses... grass and heaven 🤣 anyone want to add to this

A good, perfectly ripe avocado tastes amazing. Have you never had guacamole?

Avocado needs a teeny sprinkle of salt. I could eat them for every meal. Couldn’t describe the taste though. Just fresh and creamy.

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:34

It has a rich texture similar to butter, but a nutty and delicate flavour. It's delicious either mashed up on toast, or (my favourite) cut in half and stone removed and then the centre wells filled with vinaigrette (ideally balsamic plus olive oil and maybe a dash of lemon juice), plus lots of freshly milled salt and pepper on top. This cuts through the richness.

Also with stollen sadly to get the decent stuff you need to look outside supermarkets, so don't discount it until you have tasted the real thing from Germany ideally!

safariboot · 10/01/2021 23:35

It's not all that.

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:35

@knockeduplockeddown - that’s more what I was after, a well thought out description ha ha x

It's creamy. I like it slightly firm with lime juice on but it's also amazing mashed on toast or made into guacamole.

knockeduplockeddown · 10/01/2021 23:36

Might have to try and get my hands on an avocado tomorrow now. Avo on toast with a sprinkle of salt and a poached egg on top 👌🏻

StormcloakNord · 10/01/2021 23:36

It really does taste like mushy grass. Very very very earthy and just... not that nice unless you mash it with salt/pepper and add in tomatoes and lime juice.... so literally guacamole 😂

Lightningrain · 10/01/2021 23:37

They have a creamy, fairly mild taste.

Gorgeous mashed on toast with lime juice, chilli flakes and black pepper. Even better with a poached egg on top.

Elouera · 10/01/2021 23:37

In the UK, its tricky to find good ones. When I used to live abroad, the chance of getting a manky, hard, brown one was rare. In the Uk, its FAR more common.

The texture should be creamy, and almost spreadable, although fresh ones are soft but hold their shape. Taste isnt distinct or strong IMO, but savoury.

OP- are you an adult? Is there a reason you have never tried an avocado??? Its hardy and exotic rarity in 2021!

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:37

Also pls verify - Am I right in saying stollen tastes a lot like those cakes you get in supermarkets ‘almond fingers’ they are normally called?

If grass and a banana could cross pollinate, they’d make an avocado.

I don't think the texture is at all like even an unripe banana unless the avocado is past its best! It should be firm and creamy. An unripe banana is floury and hard.

And the flavour is far more nutty than grassy.

Odd description in my opinion!

BrassicaBabe · 10/01/2021 23:38

Slimy little fuckers. The devil's food.

minipie · 10/01/2021 23:39

It’s creamy (if it’s a good one) but quite bland. Delicious with some chilli flakes and salt though. Or feta, or smoked salmon... anything salty goes really well with it.

Imagine it as a sort of vegetabley tasting butter.

They are very hit and miss though. Some never really ripen and stay rock solid. Some are a bit watery. A lot go bad and have brown patches whose flavour sadly permeates the nice green bits too. You want one that just gives a little when you press the narrow end - but you can’t press them till you’ve bought them!!

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:39

Yes I’m an adult - 31. Just never tried it. A similar thread going right now about ‘normal foods you’ve never tried’ inspired me to find out what I’m missing. I think I’ll try it.

No. Real stollen is nothing like that at all. It is a fruit cake but lighter than British Christmas cakes, lots of raisins, and covered in icing sugar.

What?!

They don't have the taste or texture of bananas or grass!!

A good one has the texture of spreadable butter out the fridge, and taste creamy, and 'fresh' (a bit like salads taste fresh) but sweeter.

TildaTurnip · 10/01/2021 23:42

Well I think they taste how I imagine fresh early spring grass tastes and the texture is like a green banana!

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:42

@MagentaDoesNotExist - I got mines from Lidl in the Xmas range. It contained almonds and marzipan and was dusted with powdery sugar stuff. Very strong, bit too strong. I think that’s what put me off.

When I say butter I obviously mean the texture of it once it has reached almost room temperature, and is ready to serve to spread onto bread. Not butter straight from the fridge!
