If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

No.

2pinkginsplease · 02/01/2021 14:59

No

Hathertonhariden · 02/01/2021 15:01

No. I'd do volunteering instead.

MintyCedric · 02/01/2021 15:01

Absolutely not! I can think of plenty of ways to usefully use my time without having to.

It's not even the work itself, it's the being beholden to a set time schedule, rules etc.

I'd like to write full time, and I suppose if I was also able to make money from it it could be considered a job, bit working for someone else? Not a chance.

1lbperweek · 02/01/2021 15:02

Not a chance!!! I’d be too busy quaffing champagne in my mansion.

AdelaideK · 02/01/2021 15:02

Definitely not.

Ifyoulikepinacoladaa · 02/01/2021 15:02

No. But I would volunteer, doing something I enjoyed and worthwhile. Probably not straight away though. I’d sit around for a few months.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/01/2021 15:03

No, but then I'm in my mid fifties. If it was mega multi millions, I think managing that would be a full time job. I'd secure the future of myself/DH and my DC. Gift money to family and friends and then DH and I would form some sort of charity to do decent things with the rest directly rather than just punting it to existing charities necessarily. This might involve us travelling to places we'd like to see both in the UK and abroad so would be an element of personal enjoyment too.

We aren't the flashy sort so I have no desire for a massive mansion/fancy car/holiday homes etc

SilentlyLaughing · 02/01/2021 15:03

No because I’m already struggling, due to health issues, and battling through the next 21 years until retirement age is going to kill me.

Dreahil1 · 02/01/2021 15:03

Yes I think I would slightly different field or I would volunteer.

ODFOx · 02/01/2021 15:03

Absolutely not.

PurplePansy05 · 02/01/2021 15:04

Yes. I love what I do. I'd reduce hours and move on to work as a consultant though to have time for my family, hobbies, travel and volunteering.

CrypticQueen · 02/01/2021 15:04

I would. Have DC at school so couldn’t travel the world or anything yet and I like working. I’d retire earlier though, and have amazing holidays in the meantime.

iklboo · 02/01/2021 15:04

Definitely not. Unless they paid me at consultancy fee rate - just to keep my hand in Grin - which I'd donate to charity.

SlippersForFlippers · 02/01/2021 15:04

Not a chance!

SexyGiraffe · 02/01/2021 15:05

I would still want to do something. Maybe not my current job, but run a charity foundation or volunteer organisation or something. I would quickly become bored with a life of pure leisure (although I'd only work part time - gotta have some leisure!)

JM10 · 02/01/2021 15:05

We had this discussion at home a few weeks ago and I said I would, but would retire early. Having just had a week off and loved not thinking about work and relaxing, I now think I wouldn't work. I'd volunteer a few days a week maybe, but I could easily fill my days with sorting the children out, the house, walking, swimming...

Sstarlight · 02/01/2021 15:06

Fuck no.

freakyfairy · 02/01/2021 15:06

@CrypticQueen if you won millions you could travel the world with the dc and bring a teacher along... I know I would.I would bring them on Antarctic exploration ships, go to the galopagos islands etc etc! They would LOVE IT!!

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 02/01/2021 15:07

I wouldn’t stay in my current job but would instead buy a house with lots of land, build massive luxury kennels that back onto fields and take in abandoned dogs so they could run free safely and play all day.

Scarby9 · 02/01/2021 15:07

Probably
I could retire now, and manage fine on the money I have (I am very cheap to keep!) but I am still working now because a) I mostly enjoy it and b) I need to be busy and seeing people.

RecipeStealingBitch · 02/01/2021 15:07

I’d love to do my PhD! I looked at it a couple of years ago but couldn’t afford the money or time

Mommabear20 · 02/01/2021 15:08

DH and I were discussing this the other week, we decided we'd open a hotel with restaurant, and do weddings and other functions as it's something we both enjoy but as owners we wouldn't necessarily be tied to the 9-5 gruel, and would also offer employment in the area.

Baileysoncereal · 02/01/2021 15:09

A few years ago I was asked this and said yes! Absolutely! I love my job!

Now it is a bit fat NO!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/01/2021 15:09

10 years ago I'd have said yes. I'm now in my mid 50s and would stop working now if I had enough financial security to ensure we could live comfortably for the next 30 years.

I would spend some time volunteering though.
