If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

Yes. I don't play the lottery as I wouldn't know what to do if I won. I need the structure of work in my life to stop me being horrendously lazy and self absorbed. Even a week of holiday, if spent at home, is enough for me and I'm raring to get back to work.

I like my job and get a lot of personal satisfaction from work, although my job can be very stressful. I'd probably reduce my hours so I could have more time to do other things, voluntary and community activities and maybe some further study.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 02/01/2021 15:31

Yep. Being at home for 6 months last year, bored out of my head, damn near killed me during lockdown. I would probably work somewhere else with less hours though.

whysotriggered · 02/01/2021 15:31

I wouldn't because I don't particularly enjoy it nor does it help society much. I would carry on with my volunteering and perhaps do another day a week as I think unless you have an amazing hobby, you do need 'some work' to make the free time enjoyable.

WelcomeToTierFive · 02/01/2021 15:32

Yes but might change what I do to volunteer

Sexnotgender · 02/01/2021 15:33

God no😂

I’d buy a massive farm and rescue donkeys and greyhounds. I’d have a private chef and a swimming pool.

Sexnotgender · 02/01/2021 15:33

Also if I didn’t need the money I’d be taking the job from someone who did need it.

ILoveAnOwl · 02/01/2021 15:34

Yes, but I'd run my own charity so it would be a passion rather than a job and I'd have plenty of people who could look after it whilst I went on lots of holidays. No way would I do my current jobs.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 02/01/2021 15:34

Fuck no! They'd never see me again as I ride off into the sunset on my private yacht captained by the beluga whale I'd bought Grin

oohmyback · 02/01/2021 15:35

Nope!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/01/2021 15:36

I only do ad-hoc and sessional work now so I'd cut down on one but keep the rest. I'd set up my own little charity and see more of my family.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 02/01/2021 15:36

No. I only work part time now because my job is lovely and very rewarding. Before kids I worked full time in a very different career and didn’t particularly like it.
If I won millions, once the kids were older, I’d have my own animal rescues.

nixso29 · 02/01/2021 15:36

Not a chance! Although I would fulfil my dream of opening my own animal rescue shelter, fully staffed - so I could still go off on holiday on a whim

mum2jakie · 02/01/2021 15:37

No bloody way!! I might do 'something' business related but would not work in my current role!

PurplePansy05 · 02/01/2021 15:37

It's not taking the job from someone who needs it, it's keeping your own job Hmm Secondly, not everyone needs to work because of money, to some working is an important part of their life and ethic, it's stimulating, so they need it for a different reason than money. I definitely wouldn't want to quit completely as I enjoy and spent far too long qualifying and developing my skills to just quit it.

JorisBonson · 02/01/2021 15:37

Fuck no. They wouldn't see me for dust. (I'm also a police officer @LowestEbb!)

HerRoyalNotness · 02/01/2021 15:38

Not at all! I’d do some training, maybe horticulture or animal husbandry and start gardening/keeping animals. No way would I work for anyone else again.

pensivepigeon · 02/01/2021 15:40

No, I might get some land / woodland and create a nature reserve.

lobster8 · 02/01/2021 15:40

I would, but it would be either very part time, or instead of doing my job for the NHS I would do it on a voluntary basis for a charity. I would want the freedom to travel more, and more time away from work generally to do hobbies and to have a small holding.

GintyMcGinty · 02/01/2021 15:41

No

But would do voluntary work

lockedownloretta · 02/01/2021 15:44

I work in a school. I would give the school a chunk of money to update IT systems and playground environments. I would resign but say that i would continue to do my job free of charge except for the tedious meetings and paperwork.
I would require flexibility though which is non existent at the moment.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/01/2021 15:45

No

Pre Covid I'd have said 'yes, until it come to a natural end in a year or two' but now, no, if I could further reduce my risk of getting Covid by not working (with teenagers) I would.

Once Covid is far less of a risk, I'd look at doing what I do now, on a voluntary basis, but I could do it on short term contracts & do other things inbetween.

bobbikato · 02/01/2021 15:47

I would keep working but would hire staff to do my household stuff and try to secretly buy the company i work for .
Also start a SMB ,
As for volunteering you may be shocked to find out as a millionaire you are not wanted even pennyless people are not wanted - my local charity told me there is a waiting list to volunteer .

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/01/2021 15:49

Not properly.

I'd carry on volunteering and would start a not for profit, local art/craft centre - classes with and sales of work by local artists.

ktp100 · 02/01/2021 15:50

100% not!!

I loved my time at home before the little one started school. I live in a naice village where loads of Mums are at home so lots of lunching and coffees and shopping.

I've never had a 'career' (unless you count teaching and I fucking hated that!) and I really quite being home.

The ENORMOUS problem with it though is having your DH pay for everything. Not great for the self worth, in honesty. Wouldn't be a problem if you'd won the lottery tho!

Tink1990 · 02/01/2021 15:53

No way! Oh to win the lottery....
