If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

Not a chance! Though once we'd finished travelling the world we'd probably buy some kind of smallholding so we'd certainly have plenty to do.

My hobby is buying and selling old teasets & collectables so no doubt I'd continue that on a bigger scale. Though probably with the profits going to charity.

AfterSchoolWorry · 02/01/2021 15:55

No way.

willfuckformichilenstarfood · 02/01/2021 15:56

The only reason I don’t tell my boss to stick his job up is arse is because I need the money.
God forbid I went back to work after I won the lottery. I’d likely get arrested Shock

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 02/01/2021 15:57

No way! Also, I always marvel at people who suggest they'd be "bored" without work.

Do they have no imagination apart from the 9-5? There are so many things to do- volunteer, exercise, read, eat out, watch films, travel, spend time with friends, do something for your community, foster a dog/cat/whatever, invest in property, restore old houses, help neighbours, help your kid's school etc etc
A MILLION things that enrich life.

(obv I dont mean during covid- I mean, assuming when life goes back to normal)

joeysapple · 02/01/2021 15:57

Not a chance!

TroysMammy · 02/01/2021 15:57

No and I only work 2 1/2 days a week but I would be a volunteer for Cats Protection. I would also give a generous donation to the local branch and the kitties wouldn't know themselves.

QuantumJump · 02/01/2021 16:00

Yes I would. But I would reduce my hours.

All the people saying they would volunteer - I've done lots of volunteering (when I was a SAHM) and I find my job much more rewarding than any of my volunteer roles!

stolenwedding · 02/01/2021 16:02

Good god no.

readingismycardio · 02/01/2021 16:03

Yes! I love what I do! I'd do it pro bono Smile I hope we're talking multi millions tho, not a £10 win 😂

madcow88 · 02/01/2021 16:06

I would! I was off sick for 10 months and it nearly killed me. It made me realise I am not a good house wife nor am I a good mum when that is all I am doing. I was offered a huge settlement to retire on ill health and I would have been comfortable for the rest of my life but I refused it.

LowestEbb · 02/01/2021 16:06

@JorisBonson funnily enough I was the only one in the crew room who said I would stay in the police at least in some capacity, my Sgt called me a 'fucking do gooder ' Grin

I've got into violin teaching the last few years and I really love doing it. So if money was no object I'd probably pay someone to do my admin and tell me when and where I'm working - and then maybe do more of it! It would be nice to be able to give lessons to children whose families can't afford it as well as those who can. I'm hoping to move towards that anyway in the future but have to get my life in order a bit more first!

CorianderBee · 02/01/2021 16:10

I'd volunteer at a library, casually freelance where possible without money worries and try and write a book

nosswith · 02/01/2021 16:11

Not a chance. Plenty of things I want to do when I retire, would just start to do them earlier.

Hangingover · 02/01/2021 16:12

No. I hate working.

Foreverlexicon · 02/01/2021 16:13

Also a police officer.
I would keep working, I love my job and I need the structure, but I would reduce my hours and negotiate extra unpaid leave

NeonSparkle · 02/01/2021 16:17

No but I might start my own business - not sure what though I would have to think about it ...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2021 16:20

I used to think I would. Now? No chance!

I'd like to open a little cafe/bar but wouldn't want to work in it other than wafting in occasionally.

BashfulClam · 02/01/2021 16:20

No chance and also it opens up a job for someone else who needs it if I leave my position.

LadyJaye · 02/01/2021 16:23

But some of us - me included - like what we do and get a lot of personal stimulation and satisfaction from it.

I do the other things you mentioned, too. There's time enough for everything.

Whatsyouremergency · 02/01/2021 16:23

I’d keep working- call handler for the Police. I love my job, although I’d sack the early shift off and just work twilights and nights.

As said volunteer status could be a problem if other volunteers find out you are rich - they will just beg for money all day . Evercise - ok but all day every day ? eat out - ok so three meals a day in new places - but you soon run out of sites that serve nice food , travel alot of hassle to do all the time you end up like the queen with 6 homes . Friends -they are working most of the time - this thread reminds me of Anton Mossimen's wife who was bored stiff when he moved his cafe to belgravia as all the neighbours are locked in behind gates . community work - local council unions do not want ladies picking up rubbish or going into schools to help every day. foster a dog - have ever you tried to adopt a dog they want to know why . invest - ok easy done pick up the phone then what ? Restore a mansion - perhaps but how to hire tradesmen that is a real issue .
AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 02/01/2021 16:29

@bobbikato

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? are you saying the ONLY way to stop boredom or to occupy your time is to continue working then? thats the ONLY way?

I disagree and many, many people dont really enjoy their jobs anyway so not sure how working in a cubicle from 9-5 every day would bring happiness if you dont enjoy it and you dont have to

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2021 16:31

I would do more university study. Probably a phd.

Fuckityfucksake · 02/01/2021 16:31

Work for money - No!
Do something for my sanity - yes, absolutely.
Once I've travelled a bit, chilled and bought somewhere hot and warm I'd buy a little farm somewhere here and rescue animals.
ANY/ALL animals, I'd need access to puppies though so maybe you could help being a cop - you rescue the puppies, I'll play with look after them and get them nice homes or keep them all.
