Handhold DH heading to ICU covid

DH went to hospital yesterday for breathing issues. We’ve been unwell for a few days and we’re already awaiting covid tests.

Just been told he’s taken a turn and is heading to ICU. He is ECV and we’ve been so careful, we’ve not been out except to the supermarket, and we’ve avoided seeing anyone.

I’m just so worried and I know the next few days will be critical

@Groovinpeanut Flowers oh lovely I’m so sorry. It’s so difficult isn’t it? I haven’t tested the kids. Only ourselves (only we had symptoms). How are you holding up? PM me if you want to chat.

Spoke to his nurse about an hour ago. Still ok CPAP. Oxygen has gone up. Can’t make any guarantees about how it’s going. It’s too early.

Which leaves me stressed and worried all night. That’s all on me though. I’m looking for a guarantee I can’t have.

I hate the nighttime. It’s the scariest time. And also when I experience nausea from covid. sipping a peppermint tea and hoping to get some rest before the sun makes an appearance.

Huge thank you s for all the well wishes. They really help keep me going.

Just a handhold here and sending very best wishes for a swift and full recovery xx

@Groovinpeanut

I'm in the same situation OP, I've never felt so helpless or useless in my life. My DH is diabetic and they can't get him stabalised. He's in ICU they've now said he's got Covid and also blood clots on his lungs. Two of our youngest have tested positive too tonight. I just don't know which way to turn. It's heartbreaking ☹️
Oh @Groovinpeanut I'm so sorry to read your post and likewise @Wardrobes123 and anyone else I've missed with sick loved ones at the moment - sending virtual hugs and best wishes to you all. Sincerely hope to hear good news of improvement soon - please let us know how things go ❤️❤️

Hello if it is any help my cev friend has just left icu. Managed on cpap. Then periods off time off that and on high flow 02. Then increased periods on normal 02. Friend previously had lots of pneumonia too and many risk factors.

Just if some anecdotal experience helps.

Hand holds xx

rookgizzardpie · 03/01/2021 02:35

I know it sounds like a cliche but he’s in the best possible place Brew

AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 02:35

I'm really sorry to hear what a tough time you're both having. I don't have any experience of Covid but I've witnessed some scary times with both my parents needing major life-saving surgery/prolonged hospitalisation and my husband needing major heart surgery too, all within the last 3 years. But I've seen some amazing medical u-turns from apparently very bad situations and realised just how strong we humans can be at fighting back. It's not always as bad as it seems . Wishing your husband get-well dust. 💐

FizzPopping · 03/01/2021 06:25

Hand hold, sorry you are going through such a difficult time. Sending positive thoughts

Hope you've managed to get some rest

Wardrobes123 · 03/01/2021 10:44

Morning - an update of sorts. DH is still on CPAP for now. He was able to get some sleep on it too which is a small positive. The nurse said his chest could still go either way at this point but it is better if he remains on CPAP.

It’s a long waiting game ICU. I know that, but I’ll hold on to the little wins just in case.

@Groovinpeanut - how is your DH doing? Please come back to this thread if you need some support. MN is so supportive if you need it xx

OP posts:
Sideorderofchips · 03/01/2021 10:46

That's good news he was able to sleep a bit op

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 03/01/2021 10:54

It's great he got some sleep - that's a miracle in itself in hospital and with CPAP.

Yes, it's definitely a horrible waiting game, but let's hope fir a little bit of good news each day, though sometimes it's two steps forward one step back 🙄

I hope you can find things to distract yourself today, it's not easy, especially when you're not well yourself! You need to be kind to yourself though and rest as YOU need to get well xx

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 03/01/2021 11:02

Wishing you all well op..

101namesforme · 03/01/2021 11:14

Glad he got some sleep OP. Thinking of you.

Hello all,

The OP has asked for these threads to come down now. As we're not in the business of making life harder - we've agreed to delete them.

She passes her heartfelt thanks to all who posted so supportively. Flowers

FiohohonaMumsnet · 03/01/2021 12:41

Hugely sorry OP!

We got your thread mixed up with a different one. We've reinstated this one now.

Very best wishes to you and DH and apologies once again. Flowers

Wardrobes123 · 03/01/2021 12:45

@FiohohonaMumsnet thank you for getting the thread back up so quickly Flowers

HappyBumbleBee · 03/01/2021 12:52

Phew I thought this thread was about to disappear and was so worried about you @Wardrobes123
I came back To say my brother was in hospital in November- he didn’t have covid but very low oxygen levels and trouble breathing and was treated with the cpap machine which over a few days increased his oxygen levels and he started to get better.
If they can get his oxygen levels up his body can then start to cope with everything else.
My brother has the cpap at home now and has to wear it at night. It was hard at first but he has got used to it and sleeps quite well with it now xx
Don’t know if that’s of any help, I just wanted to give you a bit of insight into the cpap machine x Hope things continue improving and hope you’re soon starting to feel better too xx

hotpotlover · 03/01/2021 13:17

@Wardrobes123

Thinking of you. Handhold also from me.

Wardrobes123 · 03/01/2021 13:41

Update - I spoke with DH! He was on temporary high flow so had nasal specs on. He had sat out this morning so the physio could deal with him. He’s got crackly bases. But being on CPAP is drying him out and there’s a small improvement.

He is having breaks from the CPAP but they want him to stay on it as he isn’t holding his oxygen levels independently and he still needs a lot of oxygen support.

The team are still being very cautious with us. They can’t predict how the virus will affect him and if it will get worse but they are throwing everything at it and really looking after him so well.

I, on the other hand am absolutely drained! So I’m going for a nap soon. Both children are back to school tomorrow online. So have to make sure the WiFi works and their computers are set up correctly.

Also need to sort work out but really don’t feel up to that yet.

OP posts:
JacobReesMogadishu · 03/01/2021 13:46

Well it’s good he’s allowed breaks from the cpap and that there’s improvement. Hopefully it’s onwards and upwards from here.

Nelllyyy · 03/01/2021 14:28

Really hope he pulls through, it must be very hard for you, especially with 2 children to manage as well.

Lack of sleep is the worst thing, I hope you manage to get some.

Fandaddydoozie · 03/01/2021 15:17

Get some rest. It's so important. Work can wait. School work can wait too if you don't manage to get everything set up today. Everything can wait other than food, drink and rest! Get family or friends close by to leave food on your doorstep.

Fandaddydoozie · 03/01/2021 15:18

P.s. double check that they are actually back tomorrow and that it's not an inset day. It is for a lot of the country.
