Handhold DH heading to ICU covid

Wardrobes123 · 02/01/2021 08:57

DH went to hospital yesterday for breathing issues. We’ve been unwell for a few days and we’re already awaiting covid tests.

Just been told he’s taken a turn and is heading to ICU. He is ECV and we’ve been so careful, we’ve not been out except to the supermarket, and we’ve avoided seeing anyone.

I’m just so worried and I know the next few days will be critical

@YesMeLady

SunshineCake Relatives do not make those decisions, it is a medical and patient decision.
Actually we got a phone call to discuss the ventilation of my grandad. It was our call whether they tried it or not. They were pushing towards not.

So sorry to hear that he's struggling and that it's been such a bad day. I know that awful feeling only too well. I felt like I was saying my final good bye when my husband was put on a ventilator. I was terrified that he wouldn't make it through the other end. But he did. I know that your DH has been ventilated before, but just a reminder that they're just heavily sedated and that they tend to bring them briefly out of sedation for a few minutes each day (not so that they are awake enough to respond, but just to check reflexes/that they're still ok (squeeze drs hands when asked/respond to name etc). I didn't know this to start with but it later bought a little reassurance. It made me feel as though he wasn't just a 'shell' of a person. Also, just as a precaution, and if you don't already have access, it might be worth getting his pin numbers to his accounts in case you need access to anything. I ended up in temporary financial straights when I couldn't access my husband's online bank accounts to pay bills/make payments. He also renewed car/house insurance all online and they would email reminders, which I missed. Does he use Facebook? Would he wish for you to have access to his page so that you can notify his friends/provide them with updates?
Thinking of you and Peanuts and wishing you the best outcomes.

Thank you so much for taking the same to explain things to me. You are very thoughtful even in your time of such great worry. I hope you get to see dh when you go in to sign the forms and that it is a short term measure and he soon starts to improve. Flowers.

PowerslidePanda · 13/01/2021 18:01

I just have a horrible fear that he won’t wake up. I thought if he could just keep on fighting covid on cpap then there is less chance of death.

Try to think of ventilation as reducing the energy he needs to breathe so he can re-direct that energy to fighting off the covid instead. At his age, ventilation has a high rate of success Flowers

ElfAndSafetyInspector · 13/01/2021 18:32

This must be so worrying. Sending strength Flowers

@Wardrobes123 I'm sorry he has had a bad day that's so tough that he is finding it hard to fight on. Hopefully ventilation will let his body rest and give him that fighting chance. Thinking if you ❤️xxxxxx

Hugslavia has something wonderful practical advice.

Also reminded me that dh pays everything through his bank account and email like bills.
