Handhold DH heading to ICU covid

DH went to hospital yesterday for breathing issues. We’ve been unwell for a few days and we’re already awaiting covid tests.

Just been told he’s taken a turn and is heading to ICU. He is ECV and we’ve been so careful, we’ve not been out except to the supermarket, and we’ve avoided seeing anyone.

I’m just so worried and I know the next few days will be critical

Im sorry OP, being a relative of an ICU patient is exhausting, terrifying and very tedious sometimes waiting for updates, my dd was in for a good month so I totally get the ups and downs. I hope he rallies again. I was told to say goodbye, and 8 years on dd is sat avoiding her school work so try not to think the worst just yet Flowers

@Wardrobes123 @Groovinpeanut and @Melabells, thinking of you all and your families Flowers

That's not good news OP - I'm so, so sorry.

Thinking of you and your loved ones @Wardrobes123 and @Groovinpeanut. Hang on.

Floralnomad · 13/01/2021 13:22

Sorry to read your latest update @Wardrobes123 but ventilation is the best course if he’s so tired , best wishes .

LaurieFairyCake · 13/01/2021 13:23

I hope it's ok to think and pray for both you Wardrobes and GroovingPeanut ThanksThanksThanks

CormoranStrike · 13/01/2021 13:42
@Groovinpeanut - oh lovely I'm so sorry. I'm here if ever you want to talk. I know how difficult it is and how long each day feels right now. Try to eat little and often, and get rest where you can.

Update - DH has taken a big step backwards today. He is asking to be ventilated this afternoon. He has completely given up and is finding it all too tough. His oxygen levels are poor and he just doesn't have the energy to fight anymore. It's not what I want. But then again, none of this is.
I’m so sorry to read your update, but I hope the ventilation gives his body time to recover.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/01/2021 13:48

I'm so sorry OP, but hopefully this will allow his body to recover.

Thinking of you

oneglassandpuzzled · 13/01/2021 14:21

I am thinking of all that oxygen flowing through his lungs while he is resting and sending him healing vibes.

InsertRudeWord · 13/01/2021 14:41

I'm sorry to hear that.Flowers

Lucieintheskye · 13/01/2021 14:45

Op sending love and good thoughts. Hopefully ventilation will let Mr Wardrobe have a rest, let his body rest and recooperate and give him that extra boost he needs.

Ventilation is scary, and I know it can go either way but he's young, the odds are in his favour even if they don't seem so now.

Fingers crossed for a better day tomorrow. We're here, OP. Flowers

spiderlight · 13/01/2021 14:54

Still thinking of you, and hoping that he gets the rest he needs to start recovering. My heart goes out to everyone on this awful journey Flowers

Egghead68 · 13/01/2021 15:13

I’m so sorry @Wardrobes123. It sounds completely gruelling and draining for all of you. Thinking of you.

StrugglingICUnurse · 13/01/2021 15:24

Oh @Wardrobes123 how hard for you.
It sounds like your DH is exhausted, ventilation can help give him a rest. I know it's scary. Once sedated he can be nursed in his front for several hours, the best position for him.

SunshineCake · 13/01/2021 15:26

I am so sorry to read the latest development, @Wardrobes123. Forgive me but will it happen because he wants it to or do you make the decision ?

Fressia123 · 13/01/2021 15:56

Being ventilated is not the end, it's there to help him get better and back to you.

YesMeLady · 13/01/2021 15:58

SunshineCake Relatives do not make those decisions, it is a medical and patient decision.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/01/2021 16:08

Wardrobes and Peanut I am lighting a little candle shortly for both your husbands, and hoping that ventilation gives them time to recover.

SunshineCake · 13/01/2021 16:36

@YesMeLady

SunshineCake Relatives do not make those decisions, it is a medical and patient decision.
I am aware of that in normal times but this isn't normal and I will say no more.
LIZS · 13/01/2021 16:39

I'm so sorry to hear your updates @Wardrobes123 @Groovinpeanut and @Melabells . There is still hope with ventilation and will be thinking of you all.

Wardrobes123 · 13/01/2021 17:10

@SunshineCake- his oxygen levels have dropped off significantly today despite cpap. When he had dodgy oxygen levels over the weekend he felt comfortable to continue on CPAP. Whereas he no longer feels comfortable to keep fighting on. The team wanted to intubate him at the weekend but DH was against it. He isn’t against it anymore.

It’s definitely not my decision to make it’s between DH and his medical team. I will have to go and fill in forms though - they’ve already told me that.

@StrugglingICUnurse - he hasn’t been proning really. He has lines in his groin so hasn’t done any turning but they have been sitting him out on better days. They want to place a central line for dialysis/filtration, so I assume that will happen when he’s vented?

I know his body needs to rest. I just have a horrible fear that he won’t wake up. I thought if he could just keep on fighting covid on cpap then there is less chance of death.
