If you had a baby in your mid/late 30's, how long did it take to conceive?

Hi,

So DP and I are considering this, but I'm really concerned that it will drain us emotionally, as so many people I know and know of seem to really struggle to conceive past their early 30's and it seems to take over their lives.

I'm lucky that I already have a dc from a previous relationship, but that was almost 15 years ago in my early 20's. I did have my fertility checked about 13 months ago and all was very good, but at my age, things can decline very quickly, so don't know how accurate that is. Also concerned about abnormalities past 35. I'll be 37 next year.

Anyway, don't want to ramble, was just looking for your experiences 🙂

TIA

It is like 85% will conceive within 12 months so great odds really! Go for it OP.

The book "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster has a good graph which shows the very gradual decline in fertility during your 30s and beyond, it's not as if it's high up to 35 and suddenly plummets after that (as some headlines would have us believe!)

I was 30 when I got pregnant with DC1, it took about 4-5 months of trying (there was one month during that time that we didn't try for various reasons).

I had recently turned 34 when I got pregnant with DC2, before that we had tried for 2-3 months with no success and we were taking a break, but had just one night of passion (not with TTC in mind) and that was that Grin

I have several friends who got pregnant in late 30s and early 40s with no issues. Strangely enough, the people I know who have struggled (those who have told me about it, at least) have been younger.

About 5 minutes...

Indoctro · 27/12/2020 16:42

First child aged 34

Fell pregnant the first time we had sex unprotected when we decencies to start trying

Seconds child 36

Yet again fell pregnant first time have sex unprotected

Clearly we were both very compatible and fertile to be successful on first attempt both times

Over a year between 35-36 to conceive DC1, first month of trying aged 39.

I have an (unevidenced!) theory that it was easier second time around as my cervix changed after giving birth. I always used to have light but long periods before my first pregnancy and they came back short but heavy so I think my cervix allows things in and out more readily! I conceived the first time after I tried lying with my legs in the air after sex to see if gravity helped things get to the right place. Of course could all be sheer coincidence!

Pretty much straight away when I had just turned 37. We will be TTC again next year and I’ll be 39. I’m keeping everything crossed.

Tickledtrout · 27/12/2020 16:43

36 and 40 no time. 38 about 9 months

Suzi888 · 27/12/2020 16:44

38 when I conceived, one little accident surpriseGrin is all it took!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 27/12/2020 16:45

18 months at 35/36, early mc, then one month, another early mc, then one month for DC1. So nothing for 18 months then three times in less than 6 months. Waited a year after DC1 born, then 2 months, early mc, one month, DC2 (by then aged nearly 39). Altogether 5x between ages 35 and 38.

CaramelCup · 27/12/2020 16:45

In my 20’s took 1 month both times.

Age 37 had Mirena coil removed then was 3 cycles. 3rd cycle used opks to help.
