If you had a baby in your mid/late 30's, how long did it take to conceive?

Hi,

So DP and I are considering this, but I'm really concerned that it will drain us emotionally, as so many people I know and know of seem to really struggle to conceive past their early 30's and it seems to take over their lives.

I'm lucky that I already have a dc from a previous relationship, but that was almost 15 years ago in my early 20's. I did have my fertility checked about 13 months ago and all was very good, but at my age, things can decline very quickly, so don't know how accurate that is. Also concerned about abnormalities past 35. I'll be 37 next year.

Anyway, don't want to ramble, was just looking for your experiences 🙂

TIA

I had a happy mishap with my daughter at 35, so no time.

The probability of abnormalities is still eally low; the statistics might say x% more likely, but on terms of real numbers of babies, it's not a huge risk. All pregnancy has risk of abnormalities or disabilities in the child.

I conceived the first month at 34, then the first month of trying at 36 with twins.

I had expected it to take ages (both times)!

RoundTheTwister · 27/12/2020 16:16

First month trying with DD1 at the age of 37 and not even trying (a one off without protection when I really shouldn't have been ovulating) with DD2 at the age of 39.

My almost 40 year old friend is due in April, after falling pregnant accidentally through two methods of contraception....I however started trying at 27 and, after lots of investigations and eventually IVF, had our daughter at 32. I think a lot of it is very individual.

mintich · 27/12/2020 16:18

6 months at 33 (didn't track ovulation though!), first time at 37(used clearblue digital ovulation tests) , first time at 39 (used the tests again)

AntiHop · 27/12/2020 16:19

36, on 2nd cycle.

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 27/12/2020 16:22

First child, age 33 - took 7 months.
Currently pregnant with my second, age 37 - took 4 months.

lolawasashowgirl · 27/12/2020 16:23

First and last child - about four months at age 41

Tempusfudgeit · 27/12/2020 16:26

First cycle trying, aged 39.

FloconDeNeige · 27/12/2020 16:27

3rd month age 35, 1st month age 37.

PrtScn · 27/12/2020 16:28

Contraceptive failure at 38. So instantly. I’m still a bit pissed about it now, as I never wanted children. Been ghosted by a friend because of it, presumably as she has always wanted kids and it hasn’t happened, and I’ve never wanted kids and here I am with an accidental one.

Sunny4876 · 27/12/2020 16:29

2 months at 35 after taking the depovera contraceptive injections.

Onekidnoclue · 27/12/2020 16:29

DS was first week without coil aged 35.
Currently pregnant again. Five months trying aged 38.

AudTheDeepAndCrispAndEven · 27/12/2020 16:30

Age 34 first bloody try, I mean literally the first time with no protection. We were living in different cities, had sex twice Valentine's weekend and that was it.
Age 36 three months, mostly to do with having a toddler who didn't sleep putting a spanner in the works at every fertile opportunity.
Age 38 five months, again mostly due to lack of opportunity!

NataliaOsipova · 27/12/2020 16:30

1st month aged 32. And a total (but very happy) surprise at 35....

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 27/12/2020 16:30

1 month at 32. 1 month at 34

ofwarren · 27/12/2020 16:31

35 and it took 5 months
37 and had sex just once that month and got pregnant.

PringlesForBreakfast · 27/12/2020 16:31

I have actually been tracking my ovulation with the CB tests. I normally feel it very strongly when I am. Sometimes it's actually very painful. Don't know of that's a bad sign.

Since seriously considering, my cycle seemed almost instantly more stable. Went from every 30-35 days, to a very predictable 28 day cycle. Periods VERY heavy though , which I read could indicate problems. Endo wouldn't have been picked up in my fertility tests.

I think that people have this fear, fuelled by...I don't know what, that anything over 35 is old to have a baby and conception etc will be difficult. However I've spoken to 3 different gynae's and one fertility expert who say that's not true at all, and it's over 42ish when things start getting difficult.

Unless there are underlying issues, it shouldn't take you much longer than if you were 10 years younger - backed up by many of the above examples. Good luck!

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2020 16:32

About 2 and a half years in my early 30s - don't assume you'll be able to get pregnant right away.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 27/12/2020 16:32

1 year at 34, 3 months at 35 (miscarriage) 1 month at 35 (miscarriage) and 1 month at 36

Sexnotgender · 27/12/2020 16:32

Was 36 when I fell pregnant with DS2 took about 4/5 months with an early miscarriage in there too.

Currently 38 and 25 weeks pregnant, fell pregnant on my first cycle trying.

Wnikat · 27/12/2020 16:33

3 months at 35, 1 month at 37

Northernstar1245 · 27/12/2020 16:33

2 months at nearly 35. Straightforward pregnancy. I had similar concerns to as we had waited so long. DH is in a similar situation to you with two older kids from his early 20s.

devildeepbluesea · 27/12/2020 16:33

Age 39 I was on the pill, so basically 3 days of upset stomach.

41 first month with coil out.
