Hi all!

Happy Third Day of Christmas!

Seriouslymole · 27/12/2020 17:11

Checking in for my dose of sanity. I am resolutely refraining from looking at any other threads on here. “Bumped into” some friends of ours for a very lovely walk across the moors with the sprogs and kids. She’s a secondary teacher, he’s a uni lecturer, my DH is primary but peripatetic. The uni lecturer thinks they will be shutting schools and unis until half term. I cannot cope if that is the case. He is a pessimist though so I am hoping he’s very wrong.

Christmas was lovely, despite (or because of?) the lack of family. We also had a great friend round on Boxing Day (we are not strictly adhering to the rules... so far everyone is still alive).

Recycledblonde · 27/12/2020 17:28

I’m going to have to come of Twitter, the sheer volume of utter nastiness, total contempt for mental health and the narrow minded focusing on COVID and the blame game is driving me into a pit of utter despair. I mostly follow fellow HCP so it is even more worrying that these people are actually having contact with vulnerable people. I’m afraid I’m not currently mentally strong enough to challenge them.

Jourdain11 · 27/12/2020 17:37

DH is convinced they won't close primaries and that secondary closures will be limited. If he's wrong he's going to be in trouble! He's done no prep at all for moving online (other than saying "I might go to Wilko and get a whiteboard"...lol and has barely taken home anything from school for the hols!

Just thought i'd add a link to the previous thread

hardon colanders

As I sometimes find it useful to check back on things and don't want to lose it.

@LivinLaVidaLoki you started the new thread just in time.

SirSamuelVimes · 27/12/2020 17:42

Hello all! Bit of a place mark. Feeling particularly grumpy as it's the first day of my period so won't inflict my misery on everyone else!

And to the Sir Terry Pratchett fans,I am still sad because I normally received his newest book for Christmas. It was always my little enjoyment between Christmas and New Year.

Sad DH got the next two Discworld books we need for our collection, having come to it late we've not read them all yet. It's a joy getting a new one (or two!) but definitely bitter sweet knowing we are over halfway now and getting closer to no more new ones.

Phew! Dammit though I forgot the link to the last thread.

It just feels like a choice of running through a load of mud that's more pulverised than usual because of greater footfall, or dodging the world and his dog anywhere flatter with firm surfaces.

Yeah, I'm finding this off-putting too, particularly with the hate directed at runners during the first lockdown (a bit ironic as in many instances we had always been here, it was more the haters coming out into places they'd never been before!) though at least frozen ground opens up more opportunities.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/12/2020 17:57

Keep losing you. Those threads are bonkers. They love misery.

Aztectrousers · 27/12/2020 18:01

Hi y’all.
I only know one person strictly adhering to the rules in r/l. She and her Dh and dd had covid a few weeks ago, mild symptoms but since then she’s become terrified of it and is quite the dementor. Not sure what’s going on with her.
DM had her first vaccine last week and we are being offered them at work now but haven’t decided if I want it yet. What do you all think? Are you having the vaccine?

Sonicthehedgehogg · 27/12/2020 18:04

BIL is a secondary teacher. DH asked him what his views were about Jan and what he thought might happen. He and his colleagues have all decided it's not worth preparing for what is currently proposed, as it'll more than likely be changed at the 11th hour. He's very worried about the MH of his students. Has one on antidepressants and another in an inpatient MH unit.

My in-laws are HUGE TP fans and I've been given an unofficial order of books to begin with from them. Starting with Guards! Guards!

countrygirl99 · 27/12/2020 18:05

I've been so bored today. My riding is limited to a couple of duller routes as the ground is so waterlogged here - North Bedfordshire so flood central, no chances for a good canter at the moment. Dog walks are likewise muddy and DH is coming with me. DH strolls where I like to stride out, so annoying having to slow down. DH whinges about mud so we avoid my favourite routes with nice views. We can't even go to the country park with its firm tracks as it's still flooded. It's probably a good job I don't have alcohol until I've been up to do the horse in the evening.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 27/12/2020 18:06

@Aztectrousers I'll be having mine, ASAP too as I want to try for DD2 next year and want to give some time between jab and TTC. Most of my team have had their first one and have appointments for the second. I missed the text so need to wait for it to come to our site (they only got in early as there were some leftover from a batch that needed using)

BogRollBOGOF · 27/12/2020 18:07

DH was wondering what to do tomorrow... I suggested a walk or staying in. It sums it up really doesn't it!

I've got RED January starting next week. My motovation is not the highest...
Normally it does help give me a focus to get through the month, and by the end of January it does help that there's light until 5 rather than 4. Feb is better as it's short and punctuated by things like Valentines and Shrove Tuesday.

I was that muddy today, I took off my trainers on the doorstep... and my socks... and checked up and down the road... then my encrusted leggings Grin

Sonicthehedgehogg · 27/12/2020 18:10

What's RED January?

DrDiva · 27/12/2020 18:12

Ah, found you all!
I have overeaten and over imbibed. It’s been quite nice though and felt almost normal (it’s always just the three of us).

@Jourdain11 that school thread certainly turned!

kowari · 27/12/2020 18:13

This worries me when I see posts from people that are healthy but have no idea how to risk assess and seem to think that covid is the only thing to worry about and is an automatic death sentence to them and those around them. How do you change that mindset when it's now ingrained with some people?
Or even those who are vulnerable. My grandmother recently had a fall and I'm sure being inside for 9 months has contributed to her balance issues. I think she should have taken the small risk of bubbling with my aunt and family and gone out for a walk once a week through the summer. She has had one dose of the vaccine so hopefully she will leave the house again after the second.

TabbyStar · 27/12/2020 18:14

What do you all think? Are you having the vaccine

I was thinking about this yesterday. I have never refused a vaccine in my life, but this whole experience of lockdown and specifically not being supported financially has triggered a whole lot of trauma-related feelings for me and I feel I will struggle with it because of the issue of consent and feeling forced into it (I hate people touching me in general, it can easily trigger a fight or flight response). I suppose I will have to because of my DM, though we've had covid in our house so I presume I have some immunity.

I'm not having it. I think it's been rushed out for a start, plus my friend's boy was damaged by the swine flu vaccine. His mum has researched this vaccine very thoroughly ( she has unfortunately a lot of experience with drug companies) and she would definitely not have it. I know that's a bit "my friend said" but she is certainly in the position to make an informed choice. However, that doesn't mean I WON'T have it, just not yet, wait until it's been about for a while longer. I'm also penicillin allergic, as in I get a rash, not bad enough for an epi pen but I've not been given it for years so I don't know if my reaction is any better or worse.

I actually felt a little bad because I posted something inaccurate about the NEU (although it did actually come from an ambiguous sentence in The Guardian).
BogRollBOGOF · 27/12/2020 18:31

@Sonicthehedgehogg

What's RED January?
It started off as Run Every Day, but has evolved to Regular Exercise Daily. It's organised by Mind to promote positive mental health. Normally they'd sell t-shirts/ buff and a fundraising medal to motivate / PR, but they've had difficulty sourcing suppliers this year so that hasn't happened.
Sonicthehedgehogg · 27/12/2020 18:32

Ooh thanks, will look at that!

Curlygirl06 · 27/12/2020 18:37

On an entirely separate matter ( as Livin said) this is also a thread relating to pets sometimes, so let me pick your collective brains.

I'm getting a pet in January, not a cat or a dog, and I'm after a name. However I'd like it to be related to stars, astronomy, constellations, sky, that sort of thing. Any suggestions?
Dh and I have bandied a few names about, here's some that we've debated (hotly) about!
Twinkle ( dh hates that!)
Starsky ( guess who's idea that was- not mine!)
Gemini, Venus, Sparkle, Sunshine, Willow, Daisy, (I know they're not in the general star theme but I like them!) Galaxy, Sky, Clover, (same)
Sunshine is the top one at the moment but I like Twinkle. Trouble is, if I died, dh would change the name to Starsky and I'd have to come back and haunt him!

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 18:37

countrygirl riding is one of those things that looks absolutely wonderful.

NannyGythaOgg · 27/12/2020 18:39

@LivinLaVidaLoki getting the forward link on to the last thread was more important than the backward.

On a TP site someone said they felt slightly smug when the introduced someone new to The Discworld. I replied that I always feel jealous rather than smug. Jealous that they have it all to come tinged with sadness that there are no more. Like others I got the latest each year in December and saved it for Christmas/Boxing Day reading. I still reread and get more out of them every time but so very sad there will be no more.
