For those who haven’t been out yet, it’s bloody cold! I’ve just been out for what I think is nearly my 1,400 walk since this began. Basing my figures on 280 days of restrictions multiplied by 5 walks a day with the dog. See if I can be transparent with an ungraded maths o-level then why can’t the government? Wink

For the past couple of years we’ve gone abroad after Christmas for a few days - we have a tiny family, DD’s friends are all bucketing round the country visiting relatives and our own friends tend to go away too, so even in a normal year it’s a dull holiday. This year I’ve no idea how I’m going to keep DD occupied for the next week. I shall actually cry if schools don’t go back, she so needs to be with her friends and with the best will in the world DH and I aren’t enough.

mightbealittlebitmad · 28/12/2020 09:13

I felt similar about people moaning about Christmas mixing and how it's only one day. Yes the 25th is just one day and as someone who has worked in hospitality for years I'm well used to shifting my Christmas around and celebrating when I was able. This year is totally different, it's not just one day that we can't postpone our celebrations, it's been going on for almost a year now with no real end in sight so of course people are going to jump on the opportunity to see their friends and family when they are given the green light to.

Some people live very insular lives and are happy with that, great. It's not fair for them to judge those of us who need social contact with others. I might have a husband kids but I still need to see other people, staring at the same 4 walls and faces every day drives me insane.

zigaziga · 28/12/2020 09:18

@mightbealittlebitmad yes exactly! It wasn’t about it being the 25th at all (didn’t end up being any day at all for us Tier 4ers..) It was that it was one day of a bit of freedom to see loved ones. It could have been any other random day, I would still have been focusing on it to get through the other time.

They held it like a carrot above our heads to get us to do the November lock down and then snatched it away.

Curlygirl06 · 28/12/2020 09:19

@Vintagelovingmum

Dh and I loved Effie but didnt like Euphemia as a name but decided on using it as short name for dd1. 5 days after her birth, when we were in the horrid cycle of midwife visits because she wasnt gaining weight quickly enough and driving 2 hours to get her tongue tie cut, plus just adjusting to being parents too, MIL texts and tells us that she thinks Effie isnt a good name because children will be mean and say it sounds like 'eff off' It made burst into tears in front of the midwife! My biggest regret is changing it at that point and deciding to go with a different nickname for dd1
I know someone called that but we call her Pheemie. Lovely name.
LivinLaVidaLoki · 28/12/2020 09:20

I've just ventured over to a couple of schools threads. Jeez they're madness!

But the one thing that strikes me as odd is how many teachers go straight to school from home and straight back again and don't go anywhere else at all. Ever.

The amount of posts of "three teachers in our school got it and they only go to work and home so they must have got it from your filthy disease ridden germ vectors the children.

Fog came down suddenly while I was mucking out so now I'm sitting in the car hoping it disappears again so I can go for a ride. God knows how I'm going to gill the day otherwise. Glad I'm back working tomorrow.

TabbyStar · 28/12/2020 09:36

I was reading a schools article in The Times and the comments were a mix of keep the school's open / close the schools, but all the keep them open comments were around children's needs (which I completely agree with) but no one mentioned the needs of parents, particularly mothers, to be able to work and not be at home with their kids. Is that just The Times demographic? I'm sure it was mentioned previously.

Bollss · 28/12/2020 09:40

Morning all. I'm in a bad mood today. I'm not even sure why. Just fed up. I'm watching a place in the sun which is just making me feel jealous on top of feeling fed up.

Pleasedontdothat · 28/12/2020 09:41

Checking in for a bit of sanity ...

I did my first bit of flouting on Boxing Day. I have actually followed all the rules (the actual ones, not the MN/FB/Twitter made-up ones), although it has meant avoiding some things I would normally do (like having a haircut) because I hate wearing masks so much. But my sister and her family were due to come over on Boxing Day and I’d been really looking forward to seeing them. Then we were plunged into the gloom of Tier 4 and I assumed it was off. But she called me on Christmas Eve and asked if we’d still be happy to have them round. Bearing in mind she was quite dementory at the start (primary teacher) this was quite a turnaround. They came over for a couple of hours and it was lovely to see different people and talk about different things. We’re all low risk - dh and I have both been working from home since March, dd does online school anyway and ds barely goes out at the best of times (mental health issues). I don’t feel guilty at all and it did all of us a huge amount of good.

In sadder news, my uncle died on Christmas Day - he’d been in hospital since a series of strokes in the summer and my cousin says it’s actually a relief that he’s not suffering any more. He’d been having regular COVID tests the entire time he was on the ward - all negative until two days before his death when he tested positive but was completely asymptomatic ... even so, he will be counted as a sadly death. We’d not been allowed to visit and I’m not sure if we’ll be able to go to the funeral - it’s been a horrible end to a god-awful year

MargosKaftan · 28/12/2020 09:59

Good for you @Pleasedontdothat - family matters.

We did the November lockdown for Christmas. Im glad you got your day.

ShoeJunkie · 28/12/2020 10:02

Morning ADs. Another soggy morning here. My weather app promised snow but it’s pouring down with rain instead Hmm

In happier new I’ve just booked tickets to go to the zoo! Our local zoo popped up on Facebook with an advert to say they were allowed to keep all the outside enclosures open so I went for it.

Hope everyone has a ok day.

MargosKaftan · 28/12/2020 10:05

The schools threads are insane. I pointed out last night on one that yesterday was 10 days since schools closed for the holidays and in tier 4, outside of school we've not been allowed to meet up with anyone, so anyone testing positive from today did not get it from school.

In tier 4, children are being kept apart from each other in the holidays, so any child with covid now, didn't catch it from a classmate, but probably an adult.

This means if they are right that closing schools will have a big difference on the numbers, then from today, we should see the confirmed cases drop dramatically.

Can we all keep an eye on that and shout loudly if they don't.

Any teacher or TA with covid from today until 4/5th Jan, caught it elsewhere.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 10:08

Morning all.

Sorry to hear about your uncle @Pleasedontdothat Flowers

I shout at the telly every evening the sadly deaths stat comes up with it stupid little 28 days disclaimer, and have to remind d(ementor)h that Is a bollocks figure and if we tested positive but then died getting running over by a bus we would be counted in it.

Literally my first thought this morning when I woke us was - I miss my mum I want to see her.
Now the initial nice bit of Christmas (kids being super excited with presents, lovely roast dinners etc) is over, I’ve woken up feeling really ☹️. I haven’t seen them for over a year now, and the urge to think sod it, and get in the car and drive 400 miles to give them a hug is very strong. I won’t, as they are over 70 but as soon as they’ve had the vaccine I will be up there to see them.

Curlygirl06 · 28/12/2020 10:18

Pleasedontdothat sorry to hear about your uncle.
My fil died last Boxing Day so there was no way we'd leave mum on her own on Boxing day this year. She came over with bil and sil and it was lovely.

AcornAutumn · 28/12/2020 10:30

I had a terrible night's sleep so was awake and looking out of the window many times.

sometime between 6.30 and 9.30 I think it has snowed? Or is that the super hardest frost set on roof tops? I honestly can't tell.

MargosKaftan · 28/12/2020 10:36

We've got rain. I was promised snow and feel proper cheated.

This is the year it should snow. We have nowhere to go and nothing to do, so snow would not inconvenience us. It would, however, provide entertainment as we have sledges and the park near us that I spend every fucking day taking the dcs to, has a nice hill.

It is so very 2020 that we have cold rain rather than fun snow.

Of course the dementors would probably declare sledging as covidiots and a super spreader event. This has probably helped keep down their blood pressure. (IT IS 2020 AND FUN IS NOT ALLOWED!!)

Bollss · 28/12/2020 10:38

@Pleasedontdothat sorry for your loss Flowers

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 28/12/2020 10:39

Marking my place. Thank god for these threads!

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/12/2020 10:41

I'm assuming that the teachers who only go to school from home and rely on the factory fairies and the logistics elves to take care of their needs.
The schools threads are driving mei nsane. I was stupid enough to point out that one of the factories I visor for work had 170 confirmed cases, first response "but surely THEY are allowed to wear masks? "
Yes they are, hasn't stopped it spreading, but don't worry, they haven't shut the factory, just got agency staff in (who are catching it too), so you can still get your steak delivered

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/12/2020 10:42

Visit, not visor, even autocorrect is in on it!

AcornAutumn · 28/12/2020 11:05

My computer has just made a noise like a big sigh Confused

RobinHobb · 28/12/2020 11:21

Are schools going back on not? I am going mad, I can't deal with this.
I'm trying to plan for something that is so uncertain
I have exams in January so will be properly fuct if the kids don't go back. Trying to find a back up nanny and throw money at the problem but how do you book someone "in case" for 3 or 4 weeks?

110APiccadilly · 28/12/2020 11:22

Morning all. DD slept so badly (and by implication, so did DH and I) that I caved this morning and rang my mum and asked her to come and stay for a couple of days so that we have another pair of hands and reduce the likelihood of someone falling asleep holding DD. In Wales, we don't have support bubbles for parents of children under 1, so I don't know whether this is really allowed, but if DH and I are too tired to safely look after her, what are we meant to do to get a break?! I'm not risking her life because we're so tired we might fall asleep with her on the sofa just because the Welsh Government doesn't recognise new parents as people who might need extra support.

It must count as care surely?

The safety of a child is the issue here.
