I tried to play hop scotch with the floor stickers in M&S the other day. Turns out that’s not a great idea in your 50s with a dodgy knee.

I just don't get why people are so hysterical.

I'd agree that BJ was very equivocal this morning, but why are people so desperate to be locked up and have schools closed? Btw, I read his comments about "expanding restrictions" as being T4 nationwide rather than additional measures.

Cases actually decreasing in my borough of plagueville for the past week Shock

Jourdain11 · 03/01/2021 12:20

P.S. Labour's stance on schools proves to me that they're not the party of equality, they are in hock to the Unions. Blended learning - what use is that to a kid who has nowhere at home to study, no device or no decent internet connection?

Because if they keep their children home they risk a fine. If the government make the decision to close, no fine. So they are ok enough with their principles to make others face financial hardship but not principled enough to face any themselves.

That's just my opinion of course..

Well looking at one of the articles in our local paper this morning I’d imagine some of the hysteria comes from the press. One of the areas is reported to have had a 300% rise in infections however when you read the article they have now have 36 cases out of a population of 8,700 residents. This has started a wave of close the schools comments.

Yes I’ve noticed this happening a lot. Back in the summer the Guardian was creating noisily about cases ‘doubling’ in my London borough. Cue lots of hand-wringing and judgy remarks.

Well, they had doubled — from two cases to four. In a borough of almost half a million people. But they only mentioned this casually right at the end of the article.

Weedsnseeds1 · 03/01/2021 12:45

Our local paper is rehashing the "a few dozen people took a walk on a 9 mile long beach", we're all going to die" stories, along with photographs of a few miserable, cold, dog walkers trudging on said beach in lashing rain.

Iheartmysmart · 03/01/2021 12:55

I really hope the press and all the other scaremongers are held to account after this but I doubt they will.

I’ve just been looking at the “how many rule breakers have you seen” thread and now have visions of lots of people doing a Rick from The Young Ones.

I'm currently enjoying the "slightly overweight, Pakistani, male, with diabetes and a kidney transplant, who got a shot of leftover vaccine at the end of the day, when he was already in the hospital escorting his frail, elderly relative to their appointment, absolutely didn't deserve it and it would have been better to throw it down the sink, because he's an MP" thread.

justasking111 · 03/01/2021 13:28

The Daily post said send us your pictures of sledging, snowmen, etc. and printed them whilst asking for more. They also for the last couple of weeks have banged on about staying home only essential trips out. Well they have had their bottoms spanked on FB for being such hypocrites. Vaughan Gething waffling on about not leaving the house unless you need to again. Interestingly shopping, medicines are not essential if you can find someone else to do it for you.

@Sonicthehedgehogg

God that paeds admissions stuff last night was bonkers. There was some grim mudslinging towards MNHQ and one mod in particular, disgusting behaviour from (apparently) adults.

I shall say my two pence here (where it is safe). I judge any HCP who posts ranting/alarmist/emotional comments or videos (or even, fuck me, a tiktok) on the Internet. It's unprofessional and feeds hysteria. And yes, I know nurses and senior managers who do it, and I tell them (gently and with some loving humour) that I think less of them when they do it.

Mudslinging at your host and mods. well find another forum who feed your needs would be my advice.

Here's a graph of weekly mortality for 0-14 year olds from Adapnation (who have got a lot of other good analysis on their site) from ONS stats showing that it's below the 5-year average (which is probably what you'd expect given young people are not likely to be as active or mixing with others as normal).

Also ONS stats show 27 deaths in total in under 19s recorded as covid, with the last one on 8 December (stats go up to 30th) - www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales - when you dig into stats broken down further by age groups, more of these are in 15-19 year olds than under 14s.

To put it into context, in 2018, 121 children died of respiratory infections - www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/childmortalitystatisticschildhoodinfantandperinatalchildhoodinfantandperinatalmortalityinenglandandwales

Great news!

Here's the Adapnation dashboard. From what I can see the greatest increase in mortality is in the age group 45-64 (that's the age group I'm in! adapnation.io/covid-insights/

My team only got their jabs because they were an end of batch lot that would have been wasted otherwise. We're patient facing in a hospital, including ED and Covid wards, but ours wasn't one that had the vaccine rollout yet (had to drive across the county to get it). FWIW I think any leftover jabs should be flung at anyone who wants it, be it staff, admin, passing visitor. Yes it could be prioritised better (if you can get hold of your local MP but not a nurse/physio/pharmacist, then that's a worry!) but chucking them down the sink is much more of a waste.
TabbyStar · 03/01/2021 13:53

I mean it's not great news that 27 young people have died Confused, I realise that could be read wrong, it's great news that it's not as dangerous for young people as some have made out.

justasking111 · 03/01/2021 13:53

Our local testing centre is overlooked by BIL and wife in their multi storey flat, our figures today are up again. He is puzzled because swears it is empty all day long every day, so the figures have to be coming from hospitals, nursing homes where folk reside in the area normally he says.

Weedsnseeds1 · 03/01/2021 13:55

Sonicthehedgehogg yes, I think they should be used, not disposed of. My point being that I think a person who has a number of factors making him high risk and was there anyway, due to bringing a relative who was scheduled for vaccination, is not unworthy of receiving a leftover vaccination due to occupation. Any more than a pharmacist, care worker, cleaner etc. would be.

Weedsnseeds1 · 03/01/2021 13:58

And I'm glad your team were able to access part of a batch.

It says you can leave your house if you are an elite athlete doing training, so the obvious thing to do is get an elite athlete to run very fast (thus meaning they will be out for the briefest time possible), with your debit card (wrapped in wipe-clean clingfilm-see, I've thought of everything), to the pharmacy to pick up your prescription for the medication that will stop your blood clotting (because you are sitting down at home all day). If the elite athlete is training in javelin or golf then even better, because they can keep their distance & fling your medication through your letter box quite easily, thus avoiding having to touch your doorbell (ooh er, missus).

Simple, in' it?

Sonicthehedgehogg · 03/01/2021 14:05

@Weedsnseeds1 Yes, sorry I was agreeing with you in a rambly kind of way Grin

Iheartmysmart · 03/01/2021 14:06

You do realise that the next thread now needs to be along the lines of “ADs are elite athletes and can run very fast” don’t you.
