We were up to 999 posts so thought we needed a new thread!

I've got one of those keyworker letters somewhere. No one has ever stopped me & demanded to see it. I'm slightly ashamed to say I didn't want it- it signifies something I never signed up to do. I'm just a cog in a machine that fits with all the other cogs. I'd rather be left to get on with my job without all this crap going on. Definitely not a hero. Will burn that letter when this is all over.

What I am is bloody freezing. We have to keep the windows open at work & the bastards turned the heating down. Complaining just gets a, "put more layers on, it's covid," response. So I've worn a bloody coat indoors, as well as a vest, leggings & 2 pairs of socks under my uniform. And it's still freezing.

NeedWineNow · 29/12/2020 18:04

Far be it for me to sound cynical but isn't it amazing how we've got such high figures again just before New Year.

RealisticSketch · 29/12/2020 18:08

Ok if I pull up a chair and join?

ISaySteadyOn · 29/12/2020 18:09

Isn't it, though?

ISaySteadyOn · 29/12/2020 18:09

The more the merrier @RealisticSketch BrewSmile

SirSamuelVimes · 29/12/2020 18:10

Grab a drink and a humourously shaped vegetable while you're at it, @RealisticSketch. Welcome!

RealisticSketch · 29/12/2020 18:13

Thanks, I'm on my way home from a drive in movie, great idea for fun event in virus times but it's thrown up some sadness that we can't just go to the pictures with friends like we really want to. So I'm finding solace in the thread. 😊 was a good film though and the kids loved it.

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 18:27

Completely agree about the “increase” in numbers being very convenient. Again!

They are going into raptures about it on another thread and calling anyone who dares offer another opinion a covid denier. Yawn...

NeedWineNow · 29/12/2020 18:28

Ive given up with the news and have come upstairs to do my virtual Zumba class. I feel as if I've got a lot of chocolate and wine to get rid of.....

Bollss · 29/12/2020 18:38

The increase is apparently due to an increase in tests. The rate per 100000 has remained stable over the least few days.

That's insane! Tell them it's not a "kill the keyworker" competition!
LivinLaVidaLoki · 29/12/2020 18:50

@JamSarnie

Ha, do we now have?

Extremely critical worker
Critical worker
Key worker
Worker
Furloughed

@JamSarnie not to throw a spanner in there, but I'm classed as a "keyworker performing a critical function".

@Iheartmysmart teachers are different because they spend all day in contact with kids and don’t wear PPE

So do I most days and they're not even the same group of kids. There's various adults there too. Am I special too?

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 18:54

@LivinLaVidaLoki. I’ve got no idea how that conclusion was reached. One of my friends is an SEN teacher and neither her nor any of her colleagues have so much as had a sniffle throughout and there is no social distancing or PPE. I just have a vague recollection of reading it somewhere on mumsnet.

ValancyRedfern · 29/12/2020 18:58

I am a teacher and absolutely don't want schools to close. We have a lot of safety measures in school which are miserable but I support and enforce them. I absolutely don't want to go back to online teaching. None of the people at my school who've had Covid (3 teachers, 4 students) have had any major symptoms.

TheOrchidKiller · 29/12/2020 18:58

I'm sure some people would like a kill the keyworker competition.Grin

Sorry, "critical worker", not keyworker. I can add to the hierarchy of critical workers :
-critical worker
-balanced-appraisal-&-can-see-both-sides-of-the-argument-worker
-a-little-bit-picky-worker
-inwardly-critical-but-doesn't-like-to-mention-it-worker
-leaves passive-aggressive notes stuck to the fridge (or would've done pre-covid but now that anything stuck to the fridge has to be laminated, what's the point?) worker

Being cold brings out the Stroppy-and-grumpy-worker in me.

God, I wish we could hibernate until it's over.

AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 18:59

Orchid 😂😂😂 so hard at your fridge comment!

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 18:59

There is a poster on the panic thread saying that a relative works on a covid ward where there are 168 patients and a good majority are on ventilation. Would any one hospital have that many ventilated beds? Excuse my ignorance.

JamSarnie · 29/12/2020 19:01

God, I wish we could hibernate until it's over.

I wish we could.

As it stands I doubt I will be back in the office until the summer but would like to emerge like a butterfly e.g. having lost all the lockdown kgs that I have put on through boredom and stress.

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 19:06

Ignore me - it was a wind up! I’m finding it difficult to work out who is serious and who isn’t any more!

Aztectrousers · 29/12/2020 19:07

I can’t bring myself to watch the news any more so I will rely on this thread to keep me up to date with things. Anything happening today?

One of my colleagues has just gone batshit on Facebook. Ranting on about people breaking the rules and daring to basically do anything outside the house. Loads of cranks agreeing with her but I just can’t be bothered to get involved.

I can't see a hospital having that many mechanically ventilated beds. It usually will tell you on the hospital website.

@DominaShantotto
Looks like schools won't be going back
I have exams for my MSc in January so I am well and truly fucked. I don't believe for a second that schools are going back, and I am feeling sick just thinking about it. I have worked so hard for this degree...

LivinLaVidaLoki · 29/12/2020 19:18

We had such a lovely day today. Shopped and shopped...... Just home now. It almost felt normal (save all the queues)
Then I remembered I had to travel an hour and a half in the car, just so we could eat out....ffs

Just seen today's numbers. I wonder how much of it could be lags for the Christmas period? Also the data regarding people in hospital hasn't been updated for about a week so we can't see if any of this new strain is having an effect on hospital occupancy.

we have shot up from between 9 and 21 cases a day (the usual point for the last few weeks) to 76 today. Wonder if its a hospital or care home outbreak? Not like they'll tell us eh?

Strange that infections have shot up just before new year eh? 🤔

Ignore me Livin - I was flicking between threads and got muddled. I’ve asked MNHQ to remove the post so I don’t confuse other people on this thread. Must pay more attention!

168 beds on one ward sounds a stretch. Where are they putting them, in cupboards? Shh, don't give them ideas!

But you say it's a wind-up.

I do like the phrase "the panic thread" Grin

Well, it's cold, some people stayed in, some people went out, some people got upset about people going out, schools may be shutting even though they haven't opened yet, or schools may be opening, we're not sure, the nation may be locking down, or it may be staying the same. It's anyone's guess, really.
In a nutshell, it's pr
