We were up to 999 posts so thought we needed a new thread!

Oops, in a nutshell it's pretty much like yesterday.

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 19:25

Perhaps they have them stacked up in little pods or on those children’s beds with the pull out drawer that has another mattress in it?

flower11 · 29/12/2020 19:37

Well I've heard it all now.
Abused and neglected children are just collateral damage cause it's more important that 50 year old teachers don't get covid. There's some sick individuals out there who clearly shouldn't be teachers or need to get another job.

Aztectrousers · 29/12/2020 19:41

Cheers TheOrchidKiller. I thought Boris was supposed to be making some announcement today and locking us all down again. Probably after new year then to make us doubly miserable.

So no change and lots of hysteria and speculation as per usual .

Funkypolar · 29/12/2020 19:46

I was shouted at in M&S foodhall today by an assistant. My crime was not knowing only one person was allowed to use self checkout at a time so I had to let DH pay whilst I browsed the cards. The woman was pretty aggressive. I do hope we can return to normal life where people don’t act like this.

I work in children's social care and I've seen this here before. If these fucking pilchards had seen or dealt with half the shit that I've had to as a direct consequence of this lockdown they would piss their pants. So as far as I'm concerned, those posters can suck my fucking balls. I don't even respond to them anymore as they're clearly as thick as fucking mince.

You're not wrong, they're supposed to review the tiers tomorrow. So expect a leak at 11.59pm tonight, as per.

Can't imagine anywhere going down a tier. Heard a publican on the radio saying he was fully-stocked & ready for NYE opening up. I sympathise, but I think he's being over-optimistic.

@Funkypolar
That's nuts. I got told off for violating a nonsensical one-way system in Tesco back in May. The aggression is astounding. I sometimes think it is coming out of a genuine fear of catching covid if anyone walks or stands in the wrong place. That in itself is worrying & depressing.

TabbyStar · 29/12/2020 21:01

I went the wrong way in Boots today. It killed three grannies 😭.

Jourdain11 · 29/12/2020 21:09

@DominaShantotto Don't panic just yet. My DH is a primary teacher in plagueville and literally hadn't heard a sniff from the powers that be about not going back. He's convinced primaries won't close, or that if they do, it will be till the 11th or something to put more space between Christmas and start of term.

Ghostlyglow · 29/12/2020 21:29

I've just run back here after seeing on another thread a poster advising someone to buy themselves "a nice covid mask" as a "treat"...

Taswama · 29/12/2020 21:30

Sounds like a lovely day @LivinLaVidaLoki .
I had a day at work, three of us in the building, which can probably accommodate 200. I popped in to say hi to a colleague on a different floor who had come in to print payslips.
I also managed a lunchtime swim at my gym. My gym is only £30 / month and worth it for that alone. Just hope we don't go up tiers or lockdown.

😧 That's awful. We're no longer really human any more, are we? Only potential disease bearers.Sad
dingit · 29/12/2020 21:37

Anyone read the thread about the poster who is going to report her 17 year old dd to the police for meeting her mates?
I've given up on my dc. Ds 19 before lockdown/tier203 was going to football and the gym ( all allowable under the roolz.)
After a few weeks I realised the 5 of them were going in the same car🙄. None of them sick, I know all their parents all fine too.
I can't check on him 24/7, he's not a bad kid.
Dd was following the roolz, until she realised her flatmate was going out to house parties and would bring the virus home with her. She admitted that she decided if you can't beat them join them rather than sitting home alone.
After 10 months of this shit I'm past being bothered I'm afraid.

@TrustTheGeneGenie

The increase is apparently due to an increase in tests. The rate per 100000 has remained stable over the least few days.
I've become such a sad individual that I am keeping track of the figures on the 'Dashboard'. They haven't been giving the numbers of tests carried out regularly lately, so it's not possible be confident of the relevant date and so to work out the percentage. As far as I can see it's still around 10%.

The BBC did mention that some parts of the UK had found some positive results down the back of the sofa had taken a few days to release some of their results.

Aztectrousers · 29/12/2020 21:55

I totally agree dingit. Past caring any more after all this time.

AVictoryProduct · 29/12/2020 21:59

I need a sensible view on this. Nothing to do with mutant strains or "My friend's uncle has had it 3 times" ideally.

OH had positive antibody test mid October. He didn't have symptoms.

He's a carer so he had a routine PCR swab test on Boxing Day. Came back positive for Covid, i.e. he has it again. No symptoms. So we all have to isolate again for 10 days. Everyone says he has been reinfected by the mutant strain.

Not sure I believe it. What do you think?

Have you seen what the inventor of the PCR test said about all this? He said the amplification of the molecules was such it could show an amount that's not indicative of disease.

I dont think he would be thrilled with the way it is used as diagnostic test.

I did get a test earlier this year when I was unwell. It was negative. But I don't feel comfortable with all this. So
I told mum if I'm not well again, I will simply have to isolate and my sister will have to step in.

Poor sister has very little work and very little prospect of it. So although she's not near, it would be doable.

TheOrchidKiller · 29/12/2020 22:10

@Dingit
Started reading but gave it up. I did see some responses that were saying they wouldn't report their child.

I have similarly aged children to you. Eldest is legally an adult so is responsible for their own actions. Youngest was on about seeing friends outside on NYE. I'm not keen from the angle that other people will probably be out in groups too, getting pissed, & being stupid in general. That's more of an issue than covid as far as I'm concerned.

I let them go to stuff with friends in the summer. I rather think the cold weather will put them off this time. I wouldn't report them, but am concerned that other people would.

Just made me think we need to talk about it tomorrow (cue sulks & door slams).

I saw a Tweet that said something along the lines of "If you increased IQ testing you'd find a spike in idiots", which made me laugh.

AVictory DD still tested positive four weeks after symptoms with the PCR test because of the way it finds fragments of the virus and magnifies them. False positive the other option common with PCR. I haven't seen anything that indicates that the new variant wouldn't be recognised by the immune system.

Mine are both staying in. Ds was talking about grabbing some beers and watching the London fireworks from the north downs. Until I told him they are cancelledSad

Ok well.

A positive antibody test in October means he had it at some point in the past. Maybe 4-6 months as that is how antibodies appear to last (a couple of papers say this: my reference is an article in the economist from a few months back).

A PCR test has come up positive now but has been negative in the intervening periods? Well he has got it again, but no way of knowing what "strain" it is.

The PCR tests points at a section of the viral genome that is conserved in both strains of the viral genome, so can't tell which it is positive for.

Antibodies against either strain will only last a few months either way.

he has no symptoms which is great! A sickness without symptoms is always the best type :-)

My credentials are a half complete MSc in molecular pathology and diagnostics. When I started the course my DH comments were that's "so random".... a year later, I'm like "not so useless now is it?!!"

But this is my understanding. There a lot of people on this thread a lot cleverer than me ..

I have no more experience than the average armchair analysist, but wasn't it said that you can register positive on a test for 3 months after infection?
AcornAutumn · 29/12/2020 22:26

dingit Am I being thick - can you really see London fireworks from there or is it a jokey reference to Primrose Hill?

justasking111 · 29/12/2020 22:30

London hospital person said tonight on the news that staff who had covid earlier in the year had caught it again so were off work didn't say how serious this second dose of it was,
