Anyone taking their decs down?

I put them up late and will take them down on Jan1st but there’s a trend of taking them down for Boxing Day now. Does anyone last until 12th night?

I'll take all the baubles off on 1st January and lights off / trees come down on 2nd.

Maryann1975 · 26/12/2020 20:48

Erm no confused it's Boxing Day! Sit down and open the quality street, there's another week of this to go
^this^
A fb friend posted her status earlier that all her decs were down and she had spent the day cleaning. She is a housewife with a 14 year old teenager. There is no way her house will have needed any more cleaning!

I think she is at the other end of the slattern spectrum to me. I’m very much at the quality street end!

Christmas decorations will come down between new year and Going back to work/schools going back, probably the 3rd this year.

Vitaminsss · 26/12/2020 20:49

@shinynewapple2020

NO!! I've only just put them up Grin
SameGrin this year has been such a blur for me that I only recently put them up! Reckon I’ll keep them out until NYE.
chipsandgin · 26/12/2020 20:51

Probably New Years Day, but they only went up two days ago.

Blibbyblobby · 26/12/2020 20:55

Always up til 12th night. It’s a winter festival that starts with Christmas Day. I hate the assumption that once the gifts and dinner (ie the product-driven stuff) is done the point of Christmas is over. I see Christmas Day as the kickoff.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/12/2020 21:11

If it was up to the toddler they’d be coming down now. She’s just said she doesn’t want more Christmas and no more toys, take it all away (sweeping her hands in the direction of the mantle and tree) she’s a funny one.

We’ll probably take them down the 9th, DH IS back away for work the 10th.

Livpool · 26/12/2020 21:15

I didn't even know this was a thing. We take ours down at the beginning of January sometime

gotyerhat · 26/12/2020 22:20

Nope. I'm not religious, twelve days means nothing to me. The run up to Christmas is best. The anticipation through December with kids Christmas shows and fairs (normally), trips out to forest trails and light shows (not this year), Christmas lights and advent windows, preparation leading up to one or two days of (usually) meeting family, a big blowout feast, lots of music and alcohol and gifts to light up the darkest days of winter.

And once boxing day is done and the world goes home, there is the need, the itch, the fundamental drive to clean out ready for the new year. Christmas is over, time to move on.

userxx · 26/12/2020 22:35

The tree is going tomorrow, it's been up since the 4th, not my idea and far too early.

slipperywhensparticus · 26/12/2020 22:43

Everyone onmy Facebook put the decorations up early as the kids have had a bad year cheer them up etc etc Everyone on my Facebook today I need to get my room back i need them DOWN NOW

I only put mine up a few days ago the cats have trashed them already ive not even had the lights on since Christmas eve 🤣

daisypond · 26/12/2020 22:46

12th night is when they come down. It’s only the second day of Christmas.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/12/2020 22:54

Always twelfth night in our house and my extended family

rosy71 · 26/12/2020 22:56

I find it really sad that people would get up on Boxing Day and take their Christmas tree down. I love the days after Christmas when we can finally relax, eat chocolates all day etc etc. Having decorations up is part of that. We usually take them down the weekend before school goes back , so next Sunday this year.

thismeansnothing · 26/12/2020 22:58

Mine stops up till twelve night (when normally we would have family round for a meal). January and back to school/work is depressing enough as it is without the loss of my pretty tree and all the twinkly lights. If I can delay my front room suddenly feeling bare and boring I will.

ByersRd · 26/12/2020 23:26

Twelfth night too. This is the season of Christmas, time to celebrate and relax. Love this time more than the hard work of the lead up to Christmas.
Twinkly lights, log burner, candles, good food, new things...how sad that normality has returned to some houses, just at the best bit.

I'm not religious either, it's cultural.

Over my life I've seen the "meaning" of Christmas in Britain slip from a week and a bit of holidays with exchange of gifts at the start to a month of consumerism and it's all over once the money's spent. I think that's a shame and a loss.

The best bit for you and your family but not for many others.

Christmas is over now in my house. Christmas for us starts on 1/12.

Well, that’s fine and “you do you” etc but other posters are not wrong to point out that, even if you aren’t religious, culturally and from an official point of view it’s incorrect to say Christmas is over on Boxing Day. You celebrate Christmas in Advent and that’s your choice.

1st - 24th December - Advent - the season of preparation for Christmas.

25th December - 6th January - Christmastide.

Things are different in the US (unless Christian) as they celebrate “The Holidays” beginning on the last Thursday of November with Thanksgiving and most holiday decorations do come down on the 26th December.

But I’m English. My tree goes up on the second weekend of Advent and comes down after the Three Kings have “visited the manger” on the Feast of The Epiphany, the 6th of January when we will have a nice meal and do a big clean.

I think my point is no one is wrong. Christmas means something different for many people and I suppose I despair a little when people judge others for how they spend their time and decorate.

These posts always happen at this time of year on mumsnet.

Those who love to decorate early are questioned why.

Those who bring decorations down before 12th night are questioned why - usually with a comment about decorating too early thrown in at the same time.

The bottom line is we are all different and this time of year means different things to us all.

None of us are wrong.

I'll be taking our decorations down next weekend in stages and I'll still be sad. When I grew up it was so fun to just be lazy between Christmas and new year. I remember just sleeping in, playing with my game boy endlessly and eating all the crisps and chocolate that I wanted. It was easy and I want my family to have those times.

I've finally realised after 7 years of my own family christmases that I want to do all the fun days out and I quite like the running around before Christmas, the baking, the wrapping, the cards, the decorating but by Christmas I'm exhausted. I always think I'll make more time to rest, watch Christmas movies etc but actually I love doing this between Christmas and new year. We eat Pringles, Quality Street and leftovers abs I love it. It extends the season for our family and that way I get to do everything!

Sandcastles09 · 27/12/2020 11:35

Took them down yesterday morning. Couldn’t wait. I can understand keeping them up a few more days but waking up with them in the new year is just depressing! Plus we live in a tiny house and now have a bit more room for DCs new toys!

ByersRd · 27/12/2020 11:44

friends - but you seemed to be the most defensive and judgemental.

Happy to share what we do and happy to hear what others do.
Happily relaxed today surrounded by sparkly tree, log burner, Christmas food.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 27/12/2020 11:49

Have read a few posts on fb stating the decs are coming down, think they were put up beginning of November though!

Each to their own but for me, I love my Christmas lights and won’t take them down until at least the first wk of Jan Xmas Smile
