I put them up late and will take them down on Jan1st but there’s a trend of taking them down for Boxing Day now. Does anyone last until 12th night?

We only put the tree up on Tuesday, and it'll be staying until 12th night. I really dislike the recent trend to put decorations up in November and take them down before New Year. Confused

NatMoz · 26/12/2020 14:04

Always after 7th January due to the old calendar but if we kept it up for 12 days after Christmas that would be 19th January so a bit too much!!! We also celebrate 25th December too so the decorations have been up since November!

Fizbosshoes · 26/12/2020 14:06

It always feels sad taking decs down.i said to DH as we went for a walk yesterday around the local streets, how bleak january will feel without any xmas lights up.

Sallycinnamum · 26/12/2020 14:07

Thanks for this post OP. I was just thinking it's not properly xmas until I see a thread on MN asking who is taking their tree down on Boxing Day.

All is once again right in the world!

Nicecupofcoco · 26/12/2020 14:07

Usually down boxing day, but this year after a rubbish year might leave up until new years eve! Like them away for new year's Day though.

YewandOak · 26/12/2020 14:09

Going to take mine down tomorrow or Monday. Thought about doing it today, but I'm too comfy on the settee.

earthyfire · 26/12/2020 14:14

No way... mine come down after New Year. I love them up for New Years Eve. Christmas carries on after the 25th for us.

m0therofdragons · 26/12/2020 14:15

Ours go up first weekend in December and come down the weekend before the school term starts - so 3rd January this year. I usually can’t wait but I’m in no rush this year.

Ticketybooboo · 26/12/2020 14:17

Coming down tomorrow like they always do. Christmas is over as far as I’m concerned and I look forward to new year.

fastwigglylines · 26/12/2020 14:17

Our tree went up on the 13th. We only decorated the rest of the house on the 23rd and Christmas eve though.

We're usually visiting relatives after Christmas and over NY. And we can't this year, so we're making this a Christmas holiday at home for us all, tree is staying up till 12th night. Planning on spending the next week eating Christmas leftovers and nice food, playing games with the kids and pottering.

It's shit not being able to see relatives but we never get a chance like this to be home togethers a family at Christmas, going to make the most of it, and the decorations help make it feel special.

lachy · 26/12/2020 14:17

Ours will come down on New Years day. We are moving on 8th Jan, if I could convince DH they would be coming down on Tuesday.

Neenan · 26/12/2020 14:18

the tree still looks good but mine are coming down tomorrow afternoon.

Demitri · 26/12/2020 14:20

I did mine today but I’ve had them up since the 1st of Dec. They were bugging me!

doingitforthefrill · 26/12/2020 14:21

I’ve taken the inside ones down today, I can never stand them being up after actual Christmas and just want to get the house straight and have a big clean and sort out everywhere! I’ve left the lights up outside for now though.

WhereAreMyPants · 26/12/2020 14:28

I’ve never known a single person in real life who takes their decorations down before New Year!

fairydustandpixies · 26/12/2020 14:30

I never even bothered putting any up!

SlipperySlope99 · 26/12/2020 14:41

Mine went up 1st December and we’re back in the loft by 11 this morning
DS has autism and was pleased when they went up,but was totally stressed all yesterday and when asked this morning if he wanted them taken down now or later, it was a very clear now
Hopefully his anxiety/behaviour will improve now 🤞

DurhamDurham · 26/12/2020 14:49

Ours went up weeks earlier than usual, I'm sick of them now and the tree will come down in W day or so. I've started to take some things down today, I do it stealthily bit by bit so that I don't get the moaning and groaning Grin
I've taken the lights from the porch down, the Santa stop here sign, the candle arch and the pop up tree in the hallway. I can't wait to get the house tidy again.

CouldBeOuting · 26/12/2020 14:50

Ours went up on the first weekend of Advent (which was actually the last weekend of November this year). We will take down the outside ones the first weekend of January but the inside comes down after Epiphany with the crib being the very last thing.

cracracatlady · 26/12/2020 14:50

So sick of corona and Christmas being rubbish this year I took ours down as soon as lunch was over

DitherFlicker · 26/12/2020 14:56

Christmas tree (real), decorated Christmas Eve here (UK). Comes down on Twelfth Night. Love to see it twinkling away on those quiet and wonderfully dull days inbetween!

Ontopofthesunset · 26/12/2020 14:59

I too love these seasonal threads. I can't understand taking things down on Boxing Day. We put the tree up half way through December and it comes down on 6th. Someone upthread said that keeping the tree up feels as if you are trying to cling on to Christmas when it's over, but Christmas is completely made up in its current form, so it can be and whatever you want it to be. Why is Christmas finished after 25th? Is it just because the presents have been given? It's all arbitrary so the days after Christmas are all part of Christmas if you want them to be.

ReallySpicyCurry · 26/12/2020 14:59

31st December/1st January here.

I get them all down and packed away. Scrub the house from top to bottom. Buy a fresh, floral scented candle and pots of hyacinths. New calendar up. Fresh, new start to the new year, and my favourite time, Spring. Then on New Year's Night I get out my seed and bulb catalogues and start planning the garden.

I used to despise New Year andJanuary, and find it utterly miserable, I'd cling to Christmas, but this has now become a personal tradition, and I absolutely love it and look forward to it

ReallySpicyCurry · 26/12/2020 15:01

Space is a big part of it too- our house is tiny, and the tree is currently in the space where my toddler's little table and boxes of toys sit

midinthenight · 26/12/2020 15:02

Have started but will leave the tree for a day or two. Mainly as I can't be bothered. Once Christmas Day is over I can't wait to get rid of the decs! Dc has a birthday next week too so like christmas to be gone beforehand.
