Thing is the term snobby implies you look down on other people. For me if im being snobby over accomadation style e.g. nice hotel vs hostel, thats basically me saying thats my preference. If other people want to stay in a hostel thats fine I don't look down on them but its not for me, but I would be labelled as I'm being 'snobby'.

Its simply people making different decisions and choices and having different preferences to others. In my eyes that doens't automatically mean you look down on other people.

My sister loves designer handbags would I call her snooby yeah of course but she doesn't look down on others who don't have them.

So it depends on how you interpret the meaning of snobby to be.

peaceanddove · 26/12/2020 17:32

Agree, that I'm just stating my personal preference. I couldn't care less what duvets other people have, or what bras they wear Grin

Sarcobaleno · 26/12/2020 17:34

Most people need to do blind taste tests. Watch all the people who are snobs about consumables on that Steph McGovern show. It's all nonsense. I'm snobby about other people who are judgey over other people's preferences. Liking something and being able to afford shouldn't make you judgey over others.

Except people that have personalised number plates. Tacky as fuck.

Precisely! I took this post to be about personal preferences instead of actual snobiness. Looking down on someone for their fizzy drink or candle preferences is absolutely ridiculous!

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 17:37

The thing is its fine to have preferences but it's the proclaiming that you couldn't possibly do anything else that is so grating...if you had to, you would. So, oh I couldn't possibly sleep on polyester sheets...if you lost everything tomorrow, I can assure you you would be able to. Proclaiming you'd never travel on a budget airline, well if you were stranded abroad and couldn't afford to get home any other way, you'd get on the plane.

Of course, five star hotels, first class flights and artisan foods are 'better'...it's pretty much a given, that's why they cost more.

MispyM · 26/12/2020 17:43

@Formerbabe

Yes. And no.

We get our eggs, meat a lot of our vegetables and some fruit from a local farmer.

Organic? Sure. But actually the same price as the "regular" potatoes from the supermarket.

Access is in many cases more of an issue, I believe... (?)

makemyweek · 26/12/2020 17:47

Mollypolly2610 - you see I'm a snob about granules of any sort. It has to be Bisto POWDER preferably with lovely meat juices but quite acceptable on it's own. To go one stage further I always feel a bit inadequate if I haven't managed to make the gravy from scratch but I quickly get over myself if things haven't gone to plan and grab the bisto. Grin

I do not think it is snobby to have personal preferences. I do not care what other people choose to do, but I insist on:

Egyptian cotton sheets and bedding.

Sumptuously soft and absorbent flannels and towels.

Cashmere jumpers, gloves and scarves.

White company candles and diffusers.

Cotton underwear and nightware

Clinique skin care and make up

Rituals or molten brown shower gel.

Radox bubble bath

Leather shoes/boots Ecco I cannot personally wear cheap shoes from new look or primark.

Fully waterproof warm coat

Quality wellies

Bone China mug

Organic milk and yoghurt

Meat from butcher

Lurpack butter

Heinz tomato ketchup

HP Brown Sauce

Walkers crisps

Baxters soup

Weetabix and kellogs cornflakes

Diet Coke or diet Pepsi

Hellmans mayo and Branston Pickle

Waitrose and M and S fruit and for certain other groceries.

Fairy washing up liquid

Fairy non bio

Ariel pods

Fairy or comfort softener.

superfly25 · 26/12/2020 17:53

A decent handbag, shoes and perfume for use everyday.
Also decent jewellery.

I had a long list like yours but annoyingly I lost it whilst trying to access some information.

Fairy? Don’t you have a dishwasher?

You don’t appear to be snobbish about the use of punctuation and spelling. Grin

Sorry, it was badly worded. They're all things I insist on Blush
It’s ok. I knew that. Wink

@Janegrey333

Are you new here? Picking other posters up on their spelling and grammar doesn't go down well. In fact, I'm quite snobbish about people who do this. It's very ill mannered.

Janegrey333 · 26/12/2020 18:16

@hopeishere

People who say Xmas. People who care about Russel Grouo university (mumsnet is obsessed with this!!). People who think having books in the house equals intelligence. People who put their Christmas tree up before second weekend in December. White Range Rovers. Poor table manners. Long varnished pointy nails and loads of rings.
People who say Xmas.

Do you mean write as opposed to say? Writing it like that is fine because the X represents Christ.

bugaboo218 · 26/12/2020 18:17

Yes, I have a dishwasher.

Not in the least bit new. But I happen to be particular about writing standards and educational attainment.

I don’t think one can be snobbish about people having good basic skills. That makes no sense.Confused

You just love the Fairy brand. 🙂

Christmas lights. Got to be warm white and not flashing.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/12/2020 18:22

This thread sounds to me less unmitigated snobbery (with a few exceptions) than straightforward personal taste and misguided brand loyalty. The PP who mentioned preferring camping to 5* hotels because she loves getting back to nature, I completely relate to this. As far as hotels are concerned, for working trips I'd actively pick Premier Inn every time. They're quiet, the beds are comfortable and the rooms have baths. What more do you need?

Re. 'original' art, I'm an amateur artist and would far rather have a high quality print than a rubbish original.

Talking of 'brand loyalty', it seems when it comes to the so-called 'Russell Group' universities that's precisely what we are talking about here. They branded themselves, and did so very successfully. They're known for research excellence because they say they're noted for high quality research. It wasn't some accolade bestowed by the REF - or any other metrics by which academic quality is measured - they bestowed it upon themselves. And people take them at their own estimation.

Some post-92 institutions have superior courses for things like engineering, which tend to be more up-to-date than the more traditional universities. There are other, non-Russell group universities with equally commendable track-records in the REF/TEF.

The Russell Group have told everyone they're the cream of what they do, and people bought it. Check out the list of member universities. Plenty of them come in at well below the top-20 UK rankings, are well down on the world rankings, and a good many of the elite UK universities don't even feature.

You may well be, but belittling others is not a good look. I read a wonderful thing once...I can't remember who in public life did it, it may have been a member of the royal family, not quite sure. Anyway, on meeting someone who mispronounced a particular word, they also deliberately mispronounced it every time they said it so as not to embarrass them. I thought that was pure class.
