I grew up in an extremely poor house hold in Belfast during the 70s. The estate I was raised in was recognised as the most impoverished in Western Europe.

I have experienced poverty. Soup made from free bones from the butcher poor.

I still won’t wear cheap shoes :)

Benjispruce2 · 26/12/2020 18:25

Not at all snobby about brands. I love quality whether it’s from Aldi or a market. Brand loyalty has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with being a marketing exec’s dream.

AriesTheRam · 26/12/2020 18:30

Wine,I can't drink cheap shit. Also tomato ketchup has tobe heinz, ditto salad cream

GrapeLipBalm · 26/12/2020 18:32

I like Fairy fabric conditioner too as I like the smell. The Fairy dishwasher tablets are a bit pricey for me though

You would if you had no choice.

I believe the true definition of good manners is to never make someone else feel uncomfortable? My best friend is from very old money. Every Christmas, her parents gave a huge, drinks party and invited the whole village. Her Mum would wear a full length evening gown, and her Dad would wear casual trousers and open neck shirt - to ensure no one felt either under, or over dressed. I always thought that was classy Smile

Anyone that buys branded dishwasher tabs is a muppet. Lidl or Aldi all the way.

I'd prefer to reframe the question and make a list of things it's worth paying extra for, now I can afford it. Don't give a hoot about brands.

High thread count sheets and towels, and a good quality mattress, duvet, pillows, pyjamas and dressing gown
Nice skin care and bath products
Good quality coffee
High end eating, cooking and drinking chocolate ( I love chocolate but can't abide thé cheaper stuff now sadly. The texture and taste are just horrid - substitute ingredients I think.)
Butter, always
I'm a foodie so good quality ingredients generally and high welfare meat
Good hotels
Excellent quality outdoor wear, especially walking boots and socks
My cleaning lady Thanks

Things I don't care about:

Expensive / new cars
'Designer' anything

Carouselfish · 26/12/2020 18:46

Language. Talking about money. People who don't read books.

Janegrey333 · 26/12/2020 18:50

My bête noires:

Poor use of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Headbands on baby girls.
Earrings in the ears of young children.
Next style matchy matchy decor.
Leather sofas.
Houses where everything is grey.
Tattoos of any sort.
Televisions stuck onto walls.
Bifold doors and clone kitchens.
Feature walls.
Ecco - or similar - shoes
Houses without bookcases.
Conservatories.
Glitter on or in clothing.
Houses without character where there are no objets to look at.
Furniture placed against walls.
Body con clothes.
White Stuff dresses and leggings.
Leggings.
Ripped jeans with knobbly knees on show.
Fake tan.
Hair extensions.
Duck lips.
Hush anything.
Cheap candles.
Everything from Primark.
Too many things in gardens, especially fairies etc.
Words on twee plaques indoors.

Janegrey333 · 26/12/2020 18:50

Designer stuff. Urgh

I agree this is a much better way to phrase it.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2020 18:52

People who boast are very low in my estimation. I know I don't have much to boast about myself, but I just hate it.
I agree that decent tea is a must but I once bought some very cheap tea bags and they were really good! I was surprised.

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 18:52

Poor use of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar

@janegrey333

Poor use of correct spelling....Grin bit of an oxymoron isn't it?!

Janegrey333 · 26/12/2020 18:53

@formerbabe

Not in the least bit new. But I happen to be particular about writing standards and educational attainment

You may well be, but belittling others is not a good look. I read a wonderful thing once...I can't remember who in public life did it, it may have been a member of the royal family, not quite sure. Anyway, on meeting someone who mispronounced a particular word, they also deliberately mispronounced it every time they said it so as not to embarrass them. I thought that was pure class.

Or patronising in the extreme? Hmmm?

Agree.

I read Duck's post and realised I was guilty of a number of crimes.

middleager · 26/12/2020 18:58

Sorry, I mean Jane's post!

wheretogothisyear · 26/12/2020 19:03

It has to be tea bags, Yorkshire tea is the only one I buy

kulaexchange · 26/12/2020 19:09

Googgly eyes in kids craft

FanGurrl · 26/12/2020 19:12

Cars - I don't drive a new car, but my car is an older, good, solid car. You'll never see me in a Vauxhall, I'd rather have something older for the same price. And I wouldn't be seen dead in a Renault Scenic! Again, I don't care how much it costs, that's not the issue.
However, this thread asked what you're a snob about, I hold my hand up, I'm a car snob!

pinkhousesarebest · 26/12/2020 19:35

Football shirts off the football field.
Sunburned children.
Designer tea ( good old builder’s brew all the way).
Matchy furniture ( gumtree addict).
Earrings in infant ears.
Designer dogs.
