I opened my friend's Xmas present early and I wish I hadn't...

Because it's a box of fucking Thornton chocolates! I spent ages looking for a pretty necklace for her that cost £13 And a box of Hotel Chocolat chocolates and this is what she gets me? I've known her since I was 16 so she is my oldest friend. It's not even about the money, its about the lack of thought and care that's gone into it that's upset me tbh. I feel like sending her a message tomorrow saying, let's not bother with Xmas presents any more if this is the pathetic amount of effort you're going to put into it. And she's not poor either, she's on a good salary. She's always been a bit unreliable but this feels like such an insult when I've always gone out of my way to get her something lovely. Pissed off!!

I know there's nothing anyone can say really, I just wanted to vent.

What a snotty lot on here! A £13 necklace won't necessarily 'turn your neck green'.

I was wondering how much people on MN generally spend on their friends....?
Also someone mentioned Tiffany's. A small silver tiffany necklace might cost over £100, but it's probably not worth much more than 13. I would think 80% of the cost is advertising and the blue box.

Well imagine how I felt when I opened my secret santa present and it was a Bayliss & Harding gift set. Mind you, the recipient of my gift got Thornton's chocolate. 😂

I don't think £13 is the problem. It's plenty enough for friends. But £13 neckless is not something most grown woman want to wear, unless they are spot on to their taste, that's the problem.

I hope you felt pleased that someone got you a gift...

@daisypond not really, it was Secret Santa at work so they kind of had to. Nobody is really 'pleased' with a bayliss&harding gift set, are they? 🙄

A friendship is worth far more than getting upset about this kind of thing.

Presents opened here and my husband got me...... A box of Thornton chocolates!!!!

But..... He went out of his way to find dark chocolate ones for me because our Hotel Chocolait shop is shut in tier 4.....

Had this with oh's family for decades coz oh kept it up which drove me nuts. They gave him a list for about 10 individual people with some designer items, one year he got cider from Lidl.

Eventually he saw the light when I lost my job, I told him to stop.

I suggest don't comment but next time, about September, just say, look, let's forget the presents and treat yourselves to a nice day out instead. Or draw the line at say £10 and be specific to what u like, eh no choc as on a diet.
