If you've got a fireplace, what's above it?

My house is an end terrace, Victorian. The front room has a lovely open fire, traditional looking, tiled around. There nothing above it and I can't decide what to put there . There is a picture rail above, it's a fairly standard square- ish room about 14ft.

Large mirror/picture/Wall clock?

Any inspiration? Low budget!

Nothing I don't like having any clutter around

LarsErickssong · 13/12/2020 15:50

We just have a large picture

FortunesFave · 13/12/2020 15:50

I know people love big mirrors but unless the room is particularly large, I always think it looks a bit much.

I have a large landscape painting...one I love. I don't think a clock is suitable. What sort of art do you like? I like traditional stuff...not everyone's taste I know...can you mention any artists you like?

A mirror always looks nice above a fireplace.

We have a victorian terrace and have a large mirror above our fireplace.

A picture on a wall isn’t clutter!
musicinspring1 · 13/12/2020 15:51

Simple mirror - not huge.

Diddlysquatty · 13/12/2020 15:52

Mirror here
Bought from eBay, think it was originally Laura Ashley
A favourite picture also works
Not sure I’d go for a clock

helloxhristmas · 13/12/2020 15:52

Large circular mirror with a thin Matt frame not garish or bright.

dementedma · 13/12/2020 15:53

A painting of gold finches

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 13/12/2020 15:53

We have a tv. Not my choice, I'd rather have a nice mirror.

Dyrne · 13/12/2020 15:54

We’ve got a mirror too - just over a metre wide. Agree a nice bit of artwork would go nicely as well.

My initial idea was a mirror, but I'm.not sure if that's what I'd want. The room is fairly traditional, as it was when I moved in, can't afford to buy new furniture etc but thought I could change a few things.

We’re also in a Victorian end terrace.

We have a fireplace, but no actual fireplace installed, in our living room and the same in our dining room - only just moved in recently and fireplaces are going to have to wait til next year...

We have a picture above the one in the living room, and a mirror above the one in the dining room.

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/12/2020 15:55

Now I like both those pics with mirrors!

I have a picture, but I think if I had a Victorian house I’d have a mirror in a pretty frame.
Definitely not a clock. Or heaven forbid, a telly.

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/12/2020 15:58

I have a mirror above the one in the dining room, that room is less traditional looking, and the mirror is from the 50s .

My telly is the smallest anyone i kniw has ever seen. 😂

Have you tried Pinterest for ideas? If you search mantelpiece ideas Victorian you will probably see lots of different ones that might give you some inspiration. I’ve got large mirror on mine which isn’t exactly ground breaking interior design but it looks good imo.

ImproviseAdaptOvercome · 13/12/2020 16:00

diddlysquat. That’s beautiful. I’d have something like that in a Victorian or Edwardian house.

ImproviseAdaptOvercome · 13/12/2020 16:01

Grotty flat here but this is mine.

Flamingolingo · 13/12/2020 16:03

3 fireplaces here: 2 mirrors, one with quite an ornate gold edge, one with a more modern oak edge, and on the third an antique map

Sertchgi123 · 13/12/2020 16:04

A mirror.
