If you've got a fireplace, what's above it?

My house is an end terrace, Victorian. The front room has a lovely open fire, traditional looking, tiled around. There nothing above it and I can't decide what to put there . There is a picture rail above, it's a fairly standard square- ish room about 14ft.

Large mirror/picture/Wall clock?

Any inspiration? Low budget!

A landscape photo of trees in the mist on canvas. Same tones as the wooden mantelpiece.

Obviously we don't have Christmas cards up all year...

We've got a picture that we were given as a wedding present - its a landscape in a traditionsl style gilt frame. It would look nice in a Victorian house.

4 fireplaces, two Edwardian surround, one 1950s surround and one with no surround. None used. Three have a big picture. The one with no surround has a big clock. That one is my favourite.

intheshadowofthemushroomcloud Your room is beautiful. I love the colours

Pringwells · 13/12/2020 16:33

Mirror with a very simple oak frame. As a mirror it’s useless as too high up for me to see in, but it fills the space and makes the room brighter. The chimney breast is painted quite a dark colour so it reflects the light nicely.

I like it, really don’t like TVs on walls and a painting would be a bit lost on the dark wall.

Magpiecomplex · 13/12/2020 16:34

Big mirror on the wall and a clock on the mantelpiece in one room, clock on the wall above in the second, a pair of smallish pictures on the wall above the third. The whole range!

timeforawine · 13/12/2020 16:35

Large canvas from The Range

Almostslimjim · 13/12/2020 16:36

Mirror. Also Victorian end terrace.

Not a clock - I hate clocks in rooms I'm trying to relax in, especially if they are somewhere near a focal point.

Persipan · 13/12/2020 16:36

I have a gas fire rather than an actual fireplace, and above it I have a display of vintage Formica samples. Possibly not something that would appeal to everyone, though!

Mirror every time.

I moved in April so haven't got round to getting someone to fix mine up, so no pics to show you, but mirror every time.

I like to then put candles/tea lights in holders in front in the evening and they reflect nicely in the mirror. In spring jugs of flowers from the garden and they also look lovely in the mirrors.

Vintagevixen · 13/12/2020 16:38

Forgot to say it's a Victorian terrace so quite appropriate to the era I guess.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 13/12/2020 16:40

Mirror or artwork, but please not a telly!

CoronaIsWatching · 13/12/2020 16:40

I like the starburst mirror

Paintings in some rooms, mirror in others. Ds’ room has a very small fireplace, and he has some shelves and bunting above his. DS1 has a larger one, and he has a landscape shaped canvas with his name on above his.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 13/12/2020 16:41

plain framed mirror in the sitting room
giant antique but painted white (ott ornate wooden) mantle mirror with candle sconses in the other room
dd has a mirror over hers in her room
spare room has ornamental plates
nothing in top two rooms as the fireplaces/mantles are not yet in, and also the ceiling coombs over so not possible to hang anything.

lljkk · 13/12/2020 16:42

Pictures of my great-grandmother (as young woman & old lady), her first & second husband & her parents. My 2ndC2xR sent the pics. I like to ponder what were they like.

lljkk · 13/12/2020 16:42

... got that wrong, she was my GG-grandmother.

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/12/2020 16:43

I Think part of the problem I have, is that I'm never redoing a whole room. I just havent got the money at the moment. So what I might like, might not fit with the room as it is.

I like several of these pics.

A large round mirror, house is Georgian and it's a big room, I personally think mirrors always look nice above fireplace

NancyPickford · 13/12/2020 16:43

I'm in a Victorian cottage with an open fireplace. I have a large mirror above the mantlepiece.
