If you've got a fireplace, what's above it?

My house is an end terrace, Victorian. The front room has a lovely open fire, traditional looking, tiled around. There nothing above it and I can't decide what to put there . There is a picture rail above, it's a fairly standard square- ish room about 14ft.

Large mirror/picture/Wall clock?

Any inspiration? Low budget!

It’s all personal taste isn’t it? I wouldn’t ever have one of those gas fires with fake coals in it. But there’s room enough in the world for every taste in decor. 🎄

Isn't over a fireplace very high for a tv? I mean, if you’re sitting to watch it on the average height sofa or chair, isn’t it uncomfortable to be looking up to that extent?

... no we find it to be perfect and the room is much bigger without the tv on the floor.

It’s actually a more natural position for the neck and shoulders, apparently.

I do prefer the tv not to be the focal point of a room, though, but again, that’s just personal taste (and also we watch very little television so it wouldn’t make sense for us).

Simplyunacceptable · 14/12/2020 11:18

Always had a mirror. Have a couple of candles and photo frames on the actual fireplace.

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 11:19

We watch very little tv too and so I’m glad it’s up on the wall and not in the way. We have a fairly small living space currently although when we move I may reconsider it being over the fireplace but it will definitely be on the wall up out of the way.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 14/12/2020 11:22

Yeah it does make sense to make the best use of your space. We don’t have a very big one so that’s part of it too, I suppose - it just disappears into one of the corners.

longtompot · 14/12/2020 11:27

A huge mirror and a couple of wrought iron candle sconces.

GlamGloria · 14/12/2020 11:28

In one room a piece of art and in the other a big oval mirror

Op you can make it nice on a budget if you’re patient. I used to go on Facebook marketplace every day for about three months looking for either a mirror or picture to go over my fireplace. I found a large abstract canvas going for £20 and everybody who’s seen it has complimented it and said really finishes the room. It looks much more expensive. I’m currently looking for a big rug to go in front of the fireplace. I have been looking for a few weeks and so far bought a beautiful, nearly new Laura Ashley rug that’s in my bedroom and I’m happy to wait a few months for my sitting room. I have quite a firm idea of what I want so when I see it I’m decisive

longtompot · 14/12/2020 11:40

Should have done a photo. I'm loving all the different things people have above theirs. It's nice seeing the gold coloured mirrors too. It's something I want to do with mine, which was a £20 bargain from Facebook marketplace.

I think the person who has an aversion to mirrors above fireplaces should post on the thread things you irrationally hate 😉

Very nice! Weirdly the woman who owned the house before did use one of the fireplaces as a home altar (not with mirrors tho because she didn’t worship her own reflection), it’s a great concept I might revive - I love lots of religious iconography
TrickyD · 14/12/2020 12:20

Some of ours.
Sitting room, spare bedroom, family bathroom. The bathroom fire is one of those gas ones. Very cosy when you’re having a bath.
@LovingCountryLife where did you get your stags head from? It looks fab and I’m looking for one.

I’ve a bit of a skull fetish going on ans have a carved water buffalo skull and two sheep skulls in the house and would love a stag one.
DH brought it with him from his old place, I asked him and he said he can't remember, sorry, its years old. This is kind of similar...

Thanks loving, it’s a bit small, I find they all are to be honest...😞

Vintagevixen · 15/12/2020 16:25

Can we keep the thread pics going, I'm absolutely loving seeing everyones cosy fireplaces!

Mishmased · 15/12/2020 16:41

This is ours. We had a mirror over the fireplace but had to get rid once we had it painted. Ours is a modern house not Victorian .
