If you've got a fireplace, what's above it?

My house is an end terrace, Victorian. The front room has a lovely open fire, traditional looking, tiled around. There nothing above it and I can't decide what to put there . There is a picture rail above, it's a fairly standard square- ish room about 14ft.

Large mirror/picture/Wall clock?

Any inspiration? Low budget!

A bit of a mn no-no but we have several photos on the wall above ours. Some are prints in frames and others are on canvas. We have more photos on the shelf above the fireplace, along with a trophy, a clock, some crystals and a couple of ornaments. On the hearth we have even more photos, some fake candles, a fake flower and some knitted shapes. At the moment it's also decked up for Christmas.

@Soontobe60

Here’s mine
Love it, where's the mirror from?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/12/2020 16:45

We've got two fireplaces. Got a painting above one of them, and a big framed print above the other. I've never quite understood the point of mirrors.

We have a large mirror, just waiting for our fire to turn up now!

Three large pictures, it’s a big fireplace.
I wouldn’t have a mirror. My parents did when I was growing up & no matter how you think you won’t, you’re often tempted to look in it. Over an open fire you either scorch your legs or risk setting fire to a skirt, or child’s nightdress as they get big enough to look in it.

@Breathmiller

intheshadowofthemushroomcloud Your room is beautiful. I love the colours
Thank you! It's a very cosy room.
ouchiezz · 13/12/2020 16:48

The room is huge with 2 big arch ways either side. That photo is probably 4 foot tall Blush

I have a huge framed Georgia O’Keefe landscape painting. Ok, landscape print! Fabulous calming shades of blue. I must have had it there for thirty years and never tire of . I had the print framed by a local framer, they used a very pale blue frame which sets the print off really well.

I have 3 small circular mirrors hung vertically

Feelingpoorlysick · 13/12/2020 16:53

We're in an old, traditional house and we have mirrors above both of our fireplaces.

itsoffical · 13/12/2020 17:00

A painting (and lots of clutter on the mantle)

Ylfa · 13/12/2020 17:04

Main one - loads of framed photos (of horses jumping hedges etc) and some watership down circular wood carving type thing, art by a friend and posters - everything falls down a lot (not sure why) and gets rearranged very often. There’s no mantle, it’s a sooty brick hole in the wall with a multifuel stove in. The other one has a sort of stone shelf and a giant bunny pic by me 😀, the upstairs ones are just blank or boarded up.

CatherineCawood · 13/12/2020 17:08

Mirror and fairy lights.

We have in Inglenook one in the living room and one in the kitchen (although there's a range cooker rather than fire in that one. Plus an inglenook in our bedroom. The two downstairs ones just have the oak bressummer beans but no mantles. Nothing else except fairy lights and hops or holly in autumn/Christmas. The one in our bedroom has an oak mantle as well with lots of photographs on it.
They do have the tendency to attract clutter!

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/12/2020 17:16

@ylfa that sounds like my dining room , sooty black hole, multi fuel stove and all manner of random stuff on the mantle piece. The front room is much more traditional (bland....)

There's some beautiful fireplaces on this thread. I love a mirror above and here's mine dressed for Christmas

In my old house, which was Victorian, I had an over mantle mirror almost exactly like this one (bit the ceilings are too low in this house)

Flamingolingo · 13/12/2020 17:30

@AlwaysLatte we have a mirror just like that, but it doesn’t work well with either fireplace so we have it in our hallway. I think it might be original to the house so I wanted to keep it.

refusetobeasheep · 13/12/2020 17:31

Father Christmas at the moment .....

Victorian mid-terrace.

Mirror and mantle are closer in colour than photo shows.

Oak beam in the front room, an old quirky mask in the snug, a Matisse print in the bedroom and a banksy in ds room.

Pipandmum · 13/12/2020 17:52

I have a victorian, sadly the fire surrounds were removed years before I bought it, so I put wood burning stoves in what is basically a square hole. Above one is a painting, above the other is an unusual mirror.
