There was an interesting episode of Hospital earlier this week on BBC - they're basically tracking the Royal Free group of hospitals in London and are probably a few weeks behind where we are now. They focussed on 4 patients, 3 with Covid and 1 without. One of the ones with Covid had definitely picked it up in the hospital - she came in having had a fall and eventually, very sadly, died of Covid. I can't remember if the second came in with Covid or not, but it wasn't the reason why he was admitted (liver problems). He eventually left the hospital, but at the end of the programme we discovered he'd been re-admitted, and then died. The third - a junior doctor - had all the symptoms, but had a negative test, so they treated her as if she'd had it, and she made a full recovery. There were at least two outbreaks of Covid in the hospital during the period of filming. I couldn't help thinking that if that was the picture in a flagship hospital which they were happy to have filmed, that the overall picture in the NHS must be pretty bleak in terms of vulnerable patients acquiring the infection while they're in hospital.

AcornAutumn · 18/12/2020 12:28

Maude I can’t help thinking they shouldn’t be filming in hospitals. Infection control.

Iheartmysmart · 18/12/2020 12:40

Do hospitals still have dedicated infection control nurses? I was in admin in the NHS many years ago and still remember ours. She was really quite formidable!

I had a similar experience with SPD BOGOF, it affected my ability to move in labour but basically no one cared, they just told me labour was supposed to hurt even though I tried to explain it was more than that. A week later my back completely gave in and I couldn't move. A doctor came round and gave me painkillers and told me not to do any lifting, not easy to breastfeed a baby you can't lift. 18 years later I still have back and hip problems, it's okay at the moment but I had a couple of years of constant pain and immobility about five years ago, including not being able to sit down for 3 months.

Blobby10 · 18/12/2020 13:11

@Reedwarbler I'm so sorry but I burst out laughing at the mental image of you kicking the cone and it not moving Grin. I hope your toe isn't hurting too much ps i have also kicked out at a cone and suffered a similar injury so you have my sympathy Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 18/12/2020 14:03

Until this year got in the way, I've been a regular at the osteopath, starting because of the SPD still being very inhibiting 3 months after DS2's birth. The final straw was a hot day when I'd walked the pram down to the shops and couldn't face the pain of pushing the pram and dragging my right leg back up the hill. The bus is over a mile to get me back up the hill so I can walk back down to my house just to cut out 400m!

I still have to be careful with it. I can't cope with much heavy digging and applying force assymetrically and can still get that shooting twinge through my pelvis from it.

Crap weather. Kids flopping around on tech. Reminds me of the grottier days of lockdown. At least they have a sport later so that's a relatively painless way to get them out and doing something.

Not excited about Christmas with "my little family". Far too much like lockdown to me.

I'm going to share this here as its safe to do so and I'm aware that what I am going to say is a little crass. But, it was just on our local news that the hospital here will struggle to cope with covid patients this winter on top of the usual influx of respiratory illnesses they see every year so the prediction is pretty scary.
But, I can imagine the people in hospital with covid would make up a decent amount of the people normally admitted with other respiratory infections.....
So, is there not a bit of double counting in these predictions?

Iheartmysmart · 18/12/2020 15:06

Share away Livin. You’re probably right but it’s not allowed to be logical outside these walls!

DH is an actuary and keeps going on about this. He's general insurance but still gets excited about this sort of thing! Apparently the life guys are very interested in whether this year will end up being a "good" year in terms of other flu/pneumonia deaths because people who would in a normal year die from these will catch Covid first.
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 18/12/2020 15:21

I was reading some of the reports coming out of Shrewsbury and Telford maternity services and was so grateful I don't live there - but good health care shouldn't be luck of the draw depending on where you live!

I had my first two up North - the MW were excellent the post natal ward dire - apaprently it's not normal to have to take your own painkillers with you into hopsital.

Thrid and while we weren't under that trust we were right by it - just down the road from it -several on my MW mentioned having worked there- the care we had so was so appalling put mine and DD2 lives at risk. We did complain - though think it was managed away. Stopped us having aforth child - which might have been a disguised blessing.

It was a reason people gave us not to move here to Wales poorer NHS care - so far for us it's been no worse and better in many cases. School were other one - though one we were in catchment there for was worse than anything here.

I've wonder that as well - sounds harsh but flu may well be down as it was in southern hemisphere and it's roughly the same at risk population - I wonder if it will be comparable to a very bad seasonal flu year.

TabbyStar · 18/12/2020 15:28

I saw a chart for flu admissions and they are practically nothing.

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 15:28

@AcornAutumn Yes and i remember the outcry when partners wernt allowed on the maternity ward yet Stacey Solomon and a BBC film crew were allowed in one.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/12/2020 15:41

I'd thought the same about flu. It's largely the same proportion of the population that are suceptible.

One difference is the way that causes of death are recorded which makes Covid look far worse than flu.

FeelsLikeGroundhogDay · 18/12/2020 16:12

Just plopping in with some bad news that I know I wont get slated for being upset/worried about. Last day of term for my dd in year 9, just got an email saying they wont be going back on the day they are supposed to but instead a week later and when they do, mass testing will begin. Apparently the staff will be given one days training on how to administer tests prior to the students returning. Am I unreasonable for feeling devastated and extremely anxious by this? This is never going to end is it Sad

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 18/12/2020 16:44

I'm quite worried about the complete focus on testing and (futile) attempts to control "the spreeeeeaaaadddd", rather than actually helping people recover from coronavirus. Right at the beginning, there were a few articles on looking after yourself at home and one video where a young male medic demonstrated breathing exercises for people having trouble with coughing. Now, there's no advice about how to maximise your chances of getting better sooner or even manage symptoms. Surely this sort of advice would be easy to disseminate and would prevent some people from developing complications?
I've got a horrible feeling it's not being emphasised because it doesn't inspire enough fear, and that itself frightens me.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 18/12/2020 16:45

Sorry I can't offer anything useful or practical @FeelsLikeGroundhogDay but sending you a hug.

It does feel utterly relentless doesn't it?

Iheartmysmart · 18/12/2020 16:46

@FeelsLikeGroundhogDay Feel free to bring your concerns here Flowers It will end, unfortunately the doom mongers seem to have a louder voice than those with a bit of common sense which makes everything seem bleak.

Iheartmysmart · 18/12/2020 16:47

Sorry, hope that didn’t come across as patronising. It wasn’t meant that way.

FeelsLikeGroundhogDay · 18/12/2020 17:04

Not patronising at all @Iheartmysmart, thankyou and also thankyou @LivinLaVidaLoki. Made the mistake of venturing onto other boards, why cant people see how disturbing this all is? It's been nearly a year and theres still no end in sight. I dont know how much more I can take tbh...

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 17:10

Got Channel 5 news on. They showed scenes from Tuesday night of revellers on a big London street just before London went into tier 3 at midnight.
The soiree Tobias Ellwood went to with 27 others was on the same night but....................radio silence.

On the school note, one of the years in DD2's school had someone test positive so the whole year was sent home. But in the newsletter about it, it said, in big bold black print Remember, in most people coronavirus is a mild illness Confused So, if that is true, why does a whole year need to be sent home?

Also, in my bid to be more positive, we have begun to play Pokemon Go and we have caught a Pikachu!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 18/12/2020 17:26

I keep seeing loads of media stories trying to get everyone behind the NHS Christmas single.
Sang byclearly very busy ICU nurses.

Bloody weird song choice.

Did Captain Tom not raise enough. I'm so sick of the NHS being branded as a charity and not a PUBLIC SERVICE FUNDED THROUGH TAX.

Between this and the tick tocking I'm finding my patience for this nhs novelty nonsense running low.

I'd sooner buy the annoying sausage roll guys song. Would never listen to it but moneys for the Trussell Trust I think. Which on the balance of things will benefit more people than the NHS at the moment.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 18/12/2020 17:35

@rosettesforjill sorry about your son, hope he doesn't get ill and my sympathies to you about not being able to see your family.
@Plibber that's strange to hear about the doctor not being high up the list for the vaccine. My friend, who I have mentioned before on one of these threads, is a cancer nurse and had his first vaccine yesterday. He is 30, normal weight I believe (he has mentioned putting on some kgs this year but who hasn't?!), and in general good health. He has also had covid so may actually have some immunity now.
@FeelsLikeGroundhogDay these things do feel massively relentless. Nothing is forever although right now is shit and I love having this group to vent to and hear other people expressing frustrations.

TabbyStar · 18/12/2020 17:43

I've got to take my DM for the vaccine tomorrow but today there were long queues of frail 80+ year olds standing in the rain down the street. They're is a tiny car park with not enough space at three best of times. I'm dreading it. My DM gets massively anxious about all this sort of stuff.
