... whilst waiting to see if the kids are or are not going to school next week and walking with imaginary cows.

I heard that Gove was against moving London to Tier 3 uniformly and thought that only the worse affected Outer boroughs should be moved. It's also a little weird that apparently this has been done when the city's hospitals are actually less stretched than they would usually be at this time of the year. But I thought it was all about "protecting the NHS"?

DH made an interesting point that London has large hospital capacity because they need to have beds not only for residents, but also tourists, visitors, commuters... And, of course, at present there are no tourists, and few visitors or commuters. So it's not surprising that the hospitals aren't too busy!

Apparently a lot of the abstaining/grudgingly voting with the government Tory MPs said that the government will no longer have their support after today, so that's something
You'd think that Her Majesty's So-Called Opposition, which provides most of London's MPs, might have made some objection. But no, they are spineless wets. With a Deputy Leader who said no one should EVER die from Covid. (It doesn't matter if they die from something else, like flu, or cancer, or boredom, of course.)

I wrote to my MP, but he didn't write back - the tosser! Of course, he probably doesn't care what I think, since I can neither vote for nor against him...

zigaziga · 14/12/2020 17:17

Yes exactly, it was supposed to be a function of hospital capacity as well as number of infections and infections in the over 60s.

It was supposed to be less of a political decision under the new tiering system I thought and more a product of all the variables being plugged into an algorithm and the answer coming out. But no, it’s now super political again. I’m so angry. Why can’t they even stick to any plan for more than 10 days?

MercyBooth · 14/12/2020 17:18

I think its now zero Covid they are going for.

zigaziga · 14/12/2020 17:22

And another thing is - we know the hokey cokey of lockdowns not only doesn’t work but makes things worse because obviously everyone rushes out the minute they are freed because they didn’t trust that they won’t be locked up again next week... I know I do this ... so when will there be a discussion about this?
I saw Tim Spector say he’d be for a Tier 2 style restriction across all of us until Easter. This would make SO much sense. Enough freedom but no inside socialising. No desperate rush to the shops and the pub because the tiers are being changed..

Christmas is a disaster waiting to happen for the same reason. We’ll be seeing the ILs who we don’t even normally see over Christmas precisely because I don’t think we’ll be allowed to see them for months to come. If things were a bit more relaxed we’d have a quieter Christmas.

MercyBooth · 14/12/2020 17:29

Im not willing to not see family for nearly a year. I think thats too much to ask. Especially as my niece who is a school escort lives with my 84 year old parents anyway. And like we have discussed on here before putting strangers before our own families has a shelf life. My 84 year old DM cant socialise outside. I have no DC

MissEWeatherwax · 14/12/2020 17:37

I agree MercyBooth, my DP are in their early 80’s and can’t socialise outside in the poring rain and wind. By Easter by children won’t have hugged their DG’s for over a year! My DM has already said once she has had the vaccine she is hugging her GC, and no one, and I mean no one is stopping her!

MaudesMum · 14/12/2020 17:47

Bloody Tier 3 in London - that means all the poor bloody theatres have to close again. Some had only re-opened at the end of last week. There's a particularly pissed off theatre producer who's show (the Panto at the Palladium) had Oliver Dowden (the Gvt minister responsible) in his audience on Friday - so it quite clearly seemed safe enough for him then.

These diktats don’t come from inside government and Johnson and Hancock just follow orders.

Thought Hancock telling people not to hug is a sign of how much he enjoys it.

Glad I had that lunch out, I partly went because I knew it would be the last for a long time.

To be fair, no one is stopping her now. Get the hugs in before they’re illegal.
Iheartmysmart · 14/12/2020 17:54

Completely agree with you Orchid! I’ve had enough now. Trying desperately to summon up some enthusiasm for Christmas for DS but all I really want to do is go to bed and cry!

ISaySteadyOn · 14/12/2020 17:57

I would say what I think (agree with Orchid) but then DS would start dancing around singing Mummy said a rude word!

Exactly. Once lockdown was lifted I was out every week wherever I could because I knew we would be locked down again. I will do exactly the same again and won't even regret it.

We are seeing my parents over Christmas as usual but who knows when it will be allowed to see them after that. We are discussing the Easter holidays, I last saw them in August so if we don't go now and wait until March/April that's way too long without seeing the kids. It was a similar time frame when we went to visit in August and they hated being apart from us. They aren't around the corner so we can't just pop round for a window visit or go for a walk.
"Vaughan Gething said there were "hundreds" of people in hospital who have finished treatment for the virus but are still testing positive for it.

He said some tests can detect genetic material of the virus four months after infection."

So is this an admission by the Welsh Government that some people are told they have Covid, when in fact they had Covid some time in the previous 4 months? Dare we ask whether that night be the same for community testing?

Source: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-wales-55301751
Yes and I wonder if it's a possible explanation for so called asymptomatic cases. Somebody had a "cold" a few months ago and bingo now they have to isolate. Makes fuck all sense

Sonicthehedgehogg · 14/12/2020 18:09

Vote for "lockdown Hokey Cokey" to go in the next thread title Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 14/12/2020 18:22

"I would say what I think (agree with Orchid) but then DS would start dancing around singing Mummy said a rude word!"
More than happy to say it for you!

"He said some tests can detect genetic material of the virus four months after infection."
We were told at the start of the Oxford vaccine trial that this could happen. We were told that if we got more than one positive test two weeks in a row not to panic- isolate for the required time from the first test & ignore the next positive test.

We got invited to sign up to twice weekly lateral flow tests at work. Cue much excitement. I feel that I've done my bit by doing the vaccine trial so I will be right at the back of the queue whilst I weigh up if I really want to do this (I don't particularly). Actually hoping the trial requires us to do more swab tests because they seem more reliable to me, & I would actually prefer to stick a cotton bud up my nostrils than spit on a stick, if there is a choice.

I really hope these flow tests don't trigger a spike in false positives amongst our staff because it will be a disaster if even more are self-isolating over our busiest season.

TheOrchidKiller · 14/12/2020 18:28

The hokey cokey* is all very well but there's no verse about, "You put your whole county in, your whole county stays in, it gets "reviewed", your local public health officer refuses to let you out..."

 • There's another Christmas bubble activity for SAGE to strongly caution against. All that "rah-rah-rahing" is utterly irresponsible.
AcornAutumn · 14/12/2020 18:31

The old traces thing is a very old story which the press like to ignore because it doesn’t fit the panic.

Next stop - curfew before New Year’s Eve.

MercyBooth · 14/12/2020 18:34

Yes Is Matt Hancock still planning to have his FIL over?

Is Gove still planning on his trip to Scotland?

Journos will be watching them like hawks.

wanderings · 14/12/2020 18:38

The “strict” lockdowns (the sort which the other half of mumsnet drools over) in Spain and so on proved counter-productive for the same reason: the minute they were freed, people hit the bars like there was no tomorrow.

Which seems fitting, because with the dictators we are saddled with, there might not be a tomorrow, so all of us are grabbing today while we can.

It’s a total fucking farce. Bring on the riots. The public have to WAKE UP.

Jourdain11 · 14/12/2020 18:39

On a (hopefully) lighter note, my mum in Paris was breaking every rule she could think of during their lockdown. Going out without the piece of paper, dropping off homemade cakes to friends, audaciously venturing more than 1km from her home for a walk. She called me up and said, in quite outraged tones, "I've broken a rule every day, and the police haven't stopped me once!" She had a range of elaborate and (apparently) unbeatable excuses which she was planning to dazzle them with, and I think she was quite sad that she never got the opportunity to test them.
