Pneumatic drill has started again. Plops.

checking in. feeling slightly less miserable today - strange as it is a monday. Got some work related stuff sorted. Been asked if we will do extra hours to do the admin for covid jabs. Said yes, can always do with extra cash in Jan, i guess. Letting myself get slightly excited for christmas. Going to my mums. DS is excited.

On a different note - we watched Jingle Jangle on Netflix last night and i had really high expectations and was so disappointed. Has anyone else watched it?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 14/12/2020 12:21

DH is talking about going in one day a week as soon after Christmas as he's allowed - think he's over being at home all the time.

Covid: Schools and colleges to get tests from January
Pupils and staff identified as close contacts will be able to have a lateral flow test each day of a self-isolation period, the Welsh Government said.

Those who test negative can continue going to school or college, while those who test positive would self-isolate and book a confirmatory test.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said training for school staff would begin this week and continue in January,

He added that testing would not be compulsory.

Currently, pupils and staff identified as close contacts from a positive test must self-isolate for 10 days.

Have to admit to being confused - as they're still sending entire year groups home with one postive test and there's no way the entire year group is in close contact with the one case that triggers that so wonder if that means they want them to test 100+ pupils every morning. Though I'm all for my children being in school more.

Checking in, had a soggy visit to the local petting farm. We're both exhausted now!
Can't stand the waiting to hear about the Tier review. Would rather know now and get used to it.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/12/2020 12:28

My brain hasn't got into gear at all today.
Alarm went off (synchronised with my sunrise lamp) turned it off and next thing I know it's 8am and I'm groggy from a vivid dream. I was like that in the original lockdown where there wasn't any need to leap out of bed for 5.5 months. In Sept/ Oct I managed to get bàck into routine including getting up for a short yoga practice, but that went when the clocks changed and I seem to be back into that deep dreamy sleep again. I do wonder if it is escapism from life being tedious.

Anyway, I went to my fitness class and decided that I really needed to re-lace my shoes to take the pressure off my bony, high arches. Could I work out how to lace my trainers? Total brain fart. Everyone else is warming up and I'm there totally bewildered about how to skip a hole to lace them up having a giggle about how stupid my brain is being.

I'd like to say that an hour of prancing around in fresh air has woken me up, but that might be a bit of an overstatement Grin

I thought those tests are not accurate enough for testing or something. Not sure. Sounds a massive fuss.

Trying to avoid it all too. This is a nice site for distraction, when too stressed to focus on much, windows from a round the world, random people send them in. window-swap.com/window

I like this calming white noise type one as well. asoftmurmur.com

Anyone hear the Jeremy Vine show today from 12.30 ish onwards? Question about making it mandatory for the vaccine for care home workers. Jesus.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 14/12/2020 13:12

I can't listen to that antagonistic weasel. Makes me feel all stabby. Grin

Quite apart from the morality of that, are we just going to sack all care home workers who are pregnant, TTC, breastfeeding, or have allergies?
110APiccadilly · 14/12/2020 13:23

"Vaughan Gething said there were "hundreds" of people in hospital who have finished treatment for the virus but are still testing positive for it.

He said some tests can detect genetic material of the virus four months after infection."

So is this an admission by the Welsh Government that some people are told they have Covid, when in fact they had Covid some time in the previous 4 months? Dare we ask whether that night be the same for community testing?

Random question but you guys know everything so i'll give it a go - has anyone ever baked anything dairy free who can give me a good cake recipe or some pointers? My best friend is having to go dairy free for her little boy who they think might be intolerant. We aren't doing xmas presents for eachother, just kids, but i know she has missed treats so i wanted to bake her something that wont make her baby poorly!

NannyGythaOgg · 14/12/2020 13:27

I think as far as compulsory for care home workers is concerned, there is no reason, I don't think, why it shouldn't be part of the health screening when taking on new workers - in another year or two's time when there is proper evidence one way or the other as to how well it works - or doesn't - and what if any side effects are common.

But no other vaccination is mandatory as yet, although a few are highly recommended. I do think flu is just as dangerous for the elderly, possibly more so in the long term as the country reaches a level of herd immunity and/or we become less susceptible to the more serious issues around it - like other coronaviruses.

@TrustTheGeneGenie It's a cookie rather than a cake, but I've made these, and they were pretty good: allplants.com/blog/recipes/vegan-brownie-cookies

Curlygirl06 · 14/12/2020 13:32

Like Quantas refusing to allow people on their planes if not vaccinated, this smacks of mandatory vaccinations by the back door. I couldn't believe what one of the people were saying, I actually swore at the radio.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 14/12/2020 13:35

We're just being offered home testing kits (every three days) via work. The info with them explicitly says not to do it if you've had a positive Covid swab in the past 90 days.

Curlygirl06 · 14/12/2020 13:36

110APiccadilly they mentioned the issue around people who CAN'T have it, but one of the home managers said until the government makes it compulsory there's nothing they can do. Let's not give the government any ideas, shall we?

Iheartmysmart · 14/12/2020 13:43

@TrustTheGeneGenie DS is dairy free through choice and I just replace butter with dairy free spread and use my mum’s old sponge recipe of 4 eggs, 8oz each of spread, self raising flour and caster sugar. Either use for a Victoria sponge or little cakes. Sainsbury’s do a good vegan spread called Naturli.

They’re already debating the petition at 6.30 today

calendar.parliament.uk/

The petition was to have no restrictions on those who aren’t vaccinated.

The care home thing is bonkers, they’re short staffed already, go down the route of telling them what to do and they’ll lose more.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 14/12/2020 14:04

Everytime radio 4 Today covers badly hit job sectors they have government minister or think tank person going on about how people need to go into care sector. Last time the Union rep for shop workers pointed out many move from retail from care sector as pay and conditions are much worse in care sector and perhaps the government should do something about that.

justasking111 · 14/12/2020 14:05

@TrustTheGeneGenie not a cake but dil makes a dairy free banoffee pie which is gorgeous, she is bringing one on xmas day for them and us.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 14/12/2020 14:22

I used to work in the care sector and have no desire to go back there! The hours and pay were atrocious, there was an incredible amount of back biting amongst the staff and there was a massive emphasis on cleaning (to the detriment of actually engaging with the residents I found). I am glad that I don't have to work there at the moment!

Bollss · 14/12/2020 14:43

thanks all!! will def try one of those. Didn't even think about just swapping out the butter and following a normal recipe!! oops :)

DominaShantotto · 14/12/2020 14:47

I was doing OK - had got through the degenerative conditions lecture fine - logged in early for the live part and they were discussing how they were preparing for it to get worse over Christmas on the wards (obviously geriatrics sees the worst of it) and how people needed to stay at home - and that was it - bam - total panic attack took over me that I've not calmed down from yet.

Shame because it was going to be a really interesting session but the pre-lecture chat between the staff and guest lecturers just has got me in a right state this is never going to be over.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 14/12/2020 15:04

Eldest has just stomped off - it's the third time today one of the kids has come and complained to me they arent in a team and can't access the work.

This time they had contacted the teacher first - who'd apparently tried and failed to sort the issue. My suggestion of e-mailing teacher again for alternative access to work and the head of year makes entire situation my fault Hmm.

DominaShantotto perhaps a word with lecture about pre chat content and a personal policy of log on last minute or log on and then get coffee/tea till it starts and ignore/skim pre-chat? It does sound annoying for you though.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/12/2020 15:23

Our school is closing tomorrow. FFS, they were already closing early on Thursday.

@DominaShantotto, Flowers. Why do people do that?
