... whilst waiting to see if the kids are or are not going to school next week and walking with imaginary cows.

Tipping it down with rain here. DD has decided nights are for being awake and days are for sleeping so we didn't get up till after 12! (Goal for next week or so is to persuade her that's not how it works.)

Going to spend time with our bubble later though, so that should be good.

Orangeblossom77777 · 13/12/2020 14:36

Dh definitely grumpy here. Fussing about making food for his elderly parents and taking it out and getting a tree etc, sort of sulking that I am not fussing with him over the parents etc. Argh. I have offered to send them some online shopping if needed. Might go for a wet walk. Very grey here.

ISaySteadyOn · 13/12/2020 14:36

She's got newborn FOMO. As soon as she figures out that you are really boring at night, she'll be awake in the day. Smile

smallandimperfectlyformed · 13/12/2020 16:42

Saw one of my neighbours today. She's 84 and as fit as a fiddle, until covid was happily volunteering at lunch clubs for the elderly etc. She told me she has been invited to her 89 year old sisters house for Christmas but isn't going as she can't see how it isn't safe for now but magically becomes ok on the 24th and is waiting for her vaccine. Luckily at her age she is top of the list but my heart breaks- how much longer does she think her sister is likely to live anyway? I apologise to all who have elderly family if that sounds callous, I really just mean is isolating people at the very end of their life right?

WouldBeGood · 13/12/2020 16:45

@smallandimperfectlyformed I think the isolation is much more callous to be honest.

ISaySteadyOn · 13/12/2020 17:00

Agree entirely.

Iheartmysmart · 13/12/2020 17:21

I’m fed up today. The weather isn’t helping but it feels like the media is back to all the doom and gloom of a few weeks ago, with none of the optimism there was following the vaccine announcement.
Doesn’t help that cases in our area are going up and people now seem to be clamouring for a really strict lockdown again. Apparently the last two didn’t go far enough.
I just want some context in amongst all the negativity. I know I can find it out for myself but really think the media owes it to the general public to be more balanced in their reporting.

flower11 · 13/12/2020 17:29

I took dd to the beach this afternoon, we got soaking wet, had hot chocolate from the kiosk and she had a bubble bath when we got home. She seemed to enjoy it.

Back home after spending the afternoon drive-by-pokemoning. I only got out of the car once when I spotted another local player putting her pokemon into the gym we'd just taken and went out for a chat. The rain had eased at that point.
Pokemon is really saving our sanity at present. At least we were out of the house and not half-drowned!

Just got notification that all of the schools in my borough are shutting from tomorrow evening due to covid rates. My 11 year old daughter wanted to know if this will be a long time off school like March and I had to say i don't know. So no year 6 concerts (even though they were supposed to be just streamed to the other classes.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/12/2020 18:19

That's rubbish Sad

I can understand concern when rates are high and wanting to reduce disruption over Christmas, but for many children, the most normal, Christmassy bits of Christmas will be this week in school. It's the lack of notice and preparation.

I feel very sad about these things. Five Minute Mum (for those with wee ones and social media) touched on this... think her LO is Mary in the nativity... that can't be watched. Little things.

Introducing DD to the Snowman this eve... how have I never seen the David Bowie intro before?? DH felt nostalgic for it and it was brand new to me!

Taswama · 13/12/2020 18:34

DS1's secret santa for school hasn't arrived yet (ordered on eBay). It has to be in school by tomorrow at the latest. I was a bit confused why the rush until DP said it had to be quarantined. DS1 has confirmed that the child getting it is pretty smart and will be fine with it not being quarantined before he gets it. Just hope it turns up soon!

Jourdain11 · 13/12/2020 18:54

@smallandimperfectlyformed that's so rubbish. I do hope they'll be back after Christmas though. I thought the English LEAs and academies were not allowed to do this, though?

Isn't the weather rubbish today? It makes restrictions so much more unappealing, even though that's kind of more nonsensical (you'd imagine you would want to stay inside when it's horrible out!).

I'm back home - yay! - but this pneumonia has really knocked me out even though At Least It's Not Covid. DD2 and DS are bearing up surprisingly cheerfully considering they couldn't do much today, but DD1 is in a bad place with her OCD and tics and we've decided to keep her off school tomorrow because she just wouldn't cope. She gets so uptight because of all the rituals and stuff running through her head and then she gets the tics because she's in such a state - and then she gets more frustrated because she can't control it and gets in a worse state. It's so horrible to witness and I just wish I knew better how to help...

smallandimperfectlyformed · 13/12/2020 19:06

@Jourdain11 thank you, and I am so glad that you are back home from the hospital. Those tics you describe sound really distressing for your daughter and for you, you are really going through a lot right now. Thank you to all of the other people who have expressed support as well. My younger ones (aged 4 and 5) seem to have taken it in their stride, possibly because they are so young and there have been so many changes this year? I, on the other hand, am a full on mess but we have now decided to move into my mum's a bit earlier than planned for the Christmas period (I am a single mum and she is my bubble anyway so we aren't breaking laws as far as I am aware!)

TabbyStar · 13/12/2020 19:30

I've put the BBC news on Alexa a couple of times, heard a headline about the NHS and a third wave, and said "Oh fuck off...Alexa stop". Every bloody year the NHS is in crisis and it's not clear to me what was done over the summer to try and prevent it. The "hold on til a vaccine" isn't useful to people going out of business and losing their homes right now because we are tier 3 with 0.1% of people in our town having been diagnosed with covid in the last week.

MercyBooth · 13/12/2020 19:37

On the phone to my mum earlier trying not to cry. Ive SO had enough of the guilt tripping and emotional blackmail. To the point that i no longer want the fucking vaccine. Which is why ive just done my pieces on the Boris balls to cancel Christmas thread.

Guilt trips from where?

I don’t consume much news, just a quick scan of the Telegraph and the Evening Standard. I don’t have live TV because the bbc covid “coverage” was the last of many straws.

I suspect this has a very good effect on my outlook. But if there are people in your life guilt tripping you, can you go NC?

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 19:50

Something about winter makes my brain fail utterly

I did a workout early today and halfway through doing chores at mum’s, I remembered why I don’t - I get too tired and achey during the day if I work out early. Especially after the lack of workouts this year!

MercyBooth · 13/12/2020 19:55

Something doesnt add up.

Of course, the elderly are among the most vulnerable in society, but they must be baffled by the mixed messages they are receiving from the NHS and Westminster. The entire country has been encouraged to do everything to protect them from Covid during the worst days of the pandemic, but for what purpose? To get rid of them at the first sign of trouble now

MercyBooth · 13/12/2020 19:57

Basically from the MSM and Corona board. SAGE Gov. Im really going to have to cut down my consumption of it.

MercyBooth · 13/12/2020 20:00

Aww @flower11 Did your DD draw that in the sand. Its very good Xmas Smile

Pragmatism has to come into it doesn't it?

Also, how much additional risk are 2 80+ year olds actually taking on by spending time together?
