Morning everyone. So sorry for everyone struggling. It doesn’t get better at the moment does it? Crap weather, global shizzle, bored kids... and grumpy DHs or is that just me??! Grin

DrDiva · 13/12/2020 08:03

MercyBooth that daily mail article on the NHS advert is an aboutface, I think? Didn’t they have an article about how touching it was, with the get well card from Rudolph mentioned as a “sweet” touch?

wanderings · 13/12/2020 08:05

@Jourdain11 You're so right about Tony Blair - he would have well and truly sold us down the river, and would have convinced the public to accept lockdowns for much lesser things, such as terrorism. Heck, he convinced the world that invading Iraq was the right thing to do (with help from Bush). I shudder to think of lockdown on his watch. His government was the birth of the nanny state, and health and safety everywhere, and he can only drool over the power over the plebs that he would have had, and the late Thatcher could only drool over destroying jobs, communities and dividing the public on the scale that this government is doing it. It was also one rule for him - remember how his children were on holiday when they should have been at school, at the same time as Blunkett was having a "crackdown" on parents who took their children on term-time holidays?

I hope that someone sets up an "anti-draconian-government" group when this is over: I think that from now on, the public needs to be fiercely protective of not being brainwashed in the way that we have been. It is terrifying the way this blustering government could so easily get the public on their side to begin with, even if they are struggling to do so now. As far as I am concerned, the resistance that is just starting to come through now should have been happening back in April.

wanderings · 13/12/2020 08:09

@ValiumTowers I would have loudly told them why I was not going in, written about it on their social media, and written to the organisers as well. Fair enough if their roolz were in line with government guidelines, but going above and beyond them like that is simply not on.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/12/2020 09:42

Track and trace seems like a distant memory. Not had the chance to fill it in for anything so reckless as eating in McDonalds since late October. I've not had to download and delete the app for yonks. I delete it purely because I do not appreciate my phone constantly berrating me for not leaving bluetooth on at home which is where I am most of the time.

School, swimming, karate etc have our details anyway.

TheOrchidKiller · 13/12/2020 10:12

I've woken today from a stress dream where I was working in a hospital & wasn't wearing a mask. So I mimed putting an invisible one on & everyone was fine with that.

Masks outdoors in the rain are pretty pointless, aren't they? I confess to wearing a cloth one outside to go between shops on Friday because my hands were full, & the stupid thing got very damp. I've seen the poor parents waiting outside primary schools in them- it's hard enough juggling a book bag & a still-wet, glitter-spattered painting in the rain, let alone masks as well (we were never at Hadron Collider model level).

TabbyStar · 13/12/2020 10:31

I went for a run early this morning and there was a woman walking her dog in the countryside, where I saw perhaps three people, wearing a mask (the woman not the dog!) Why?

My DM is trying to decide whether or not to come for Christmas. I think she'll decide not to, as she'll be getting the second shot of the vaccine early Jan. I'll do her a second Christmas then. I wouldn't make the sacrifice of staying in for two weeks though just for her to spend a few hours with us, harsh though that sounds. My past couple of years have been overtaken by caring responsibilities, and for years now we've had the Christmas my DPs have wanted rather than the ones we want. Since DD and I have actually had covid there's not really any risk anyway. But DD works in a cafe (at least it was a café, it's now a takeaway) she can't isolate anyway so I don't have to make that decision for myself.

I spent Christmases alone as a young adult, and the worst thing was people banging on about it being terrible to spend your Christmas alone. There's such mixed messaging.

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 11:45

Morning all
Tabby “ I spent Christmases alone as a young adult, and the worst thing was people banging on about it being terrible to spend your Christmas alone. There's such mixed messaging.”

I think you’ve got to ignore all messaging about this type of thing. I wouldn’t mind Christmas alone. I’m hoping, assuming mum goes before me, that my sister won’t mind.

One of my cousins will be alone this Xmas. He’s also got a person in his circle who will be undergoing chemo at the time, that’s his normal place at Xmas If not with us. So he’s alone but I think a friend is planning to drop by his for a cuppa to make sure he’s not alone, but really he’s not terribly bothered.

Last night I dreamt....I was hoovering at Buckingham palace! And the Hoover was rubbish and didn’t pick up much and I told the housekeeper and she told me not to worry about it.

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 11:59

I think there was a thread about Wales?

Looking at the data, it seems like media hype

statswales.gov.wales/Catalogue/Health-and-Social-Care/NHS-Hospital-Activity/nhs-activity-and-capacity-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic/hospitalisations-by-date-localhealthboard

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 12:01

Sorry, posted too soon

I can’t find the Wales thread or I’d posted it there

Is it just Drakeford trying to scare people into his Tier 4?

And am I right in thinking that some hospitality in Scotland can’t sell booze at all?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/12/2020 12:12

There's this welsh thread - but it's under covid board.

I saw somewhere that the problem with hospitals in South Wales is staff shortage rather than too many patients.

I spent the Millennium alone - worse things was everyone asking about my plans and making me feel awful if I said I didn't have any.

DH - then still DF went up to his parents as it was suppsoed to be a massive thing in his hard drinking home town - and my parents didn't have room for all of us though I had spent CHristmas with them and they weren't doing anything and trains were crap and hadn't been working long so didn't know people where I lived and didn't have much holiday and was booked on a course starting 2nd. I ended up dreading it but it was fine.

Reedwarbler · 13/12/2020 12:24

I have just been for a very, very wet and windy walk with the dog. How does the government expect people to socialise outside (and be grateful they are allowed to as well) in this sort of weather? Everywhere is deserted and people staying firmly indoors. Even opening your windows 'for ventilation' would result in rain blowing in.
@AcornAutumn that Welsh list is interesting. I think that the majority of these cases that drive lockdowns/restrictions etc are actually occurring in hospitals, prisons, care homes etc. It is terrible that the whole country is paying the price for infection control on the cheap in government run institutions.
There is also a nasty puritanical streak with this closure of pubs all over the place, which have never been shown as infection hotbeds. Isn't it only in fairly recent years that Wales allowed pubs to actually open on a Sunday or have I got that wrong?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/12/2020 12:25

I saw somewhere that the problem with hospitals in South Wales is staff shortage rather than too many patients.

Grange University Hospital has just opened - and the person in charge of staffing and moving services over said few weeks ago there were staffing issuess.

Longer term it's supposed to be better designed for infection control so I think there's been pressure to get it open and in use.

Last I read they hadn't sorted public transport routes to it out yet - though we'd probably get a taxi there it did strike me as odd.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 13/12/2020 12:33

There was a thread on the Welsh hospital pressure I saw last night. Their numbers don't look brilliant, fair enough. But it said they were overwhelmed by Covid patients and asked people to really consider if they needed to be there or not. It doesn't necessarily mean the covid patients self presenting at A&E are all severe enough to require admitting to a bed, but it does take time to triage/assess/treat (if required) and discharge. That alongside with normal winter pressures and amended procedures due to Covid (closing whole bays for suspected but not confirmed cases etc) can easily overwhelm a hospital with staffing issues.

Knew I'd seen it somewhere.

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 12:49

It’s not the one that’s linked to

Oh well, it’ll pop up. Probably actual stats aren’t welcome there anyway.

The alcohol thing is weird and worrying imho.

amicissimma · 13/12/2020 12:50

Is this the Welsh hospital thread?

randomstatistics · 13/12/2020 12:52

Bit lacking in Xmas cheer here. Nail in the coffin was primary school saying no Xmas cards to be distributed this year. Don't understand how much Covid could be distributed on a xmas card but mind boggles. Also cannot cope with the endless conversations of minimising risk around Xmas and inevitable spikes in case in the new year and shouldn't be allowed. If you don't like it, don't participate - otherwise STFU.

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 12:54

@amicissimma

Nope.

I’m obviously on here too much!

Sonicthehedgehogg · 13/12/2020 12:57

Christmas cheer is being spread here by doing some much needed wrapping and watching Catch Me If You Can (underrated Christmas film if ever there was one).

The no cards for school kids is ridiculous, especially seeing as they all lick each other and play tag at break. But I can't lie, if DD was school aged, I'd be relieved not to have to bother with all the extras!

BogRollBOGOF · 13/12/2020 13:04

I've never thought about Catch Me If You Can being a Christmas film, but there is definitely that strand within it. I love that film.

We've had a short wade through the woods. It was wet enough to get out my tragic poncho for the first time. I've kept my legs 90% dry at least Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 13/12/2020 14:16

We went to a craft shop. DD1 thoroughly enjoyed it. I am happy for her.

I had my lanyard but the majority except the staff were muzzled up. It's not enjoyable to browse when you are just waiting for someone to challenge you. No one did but the threat is always there.

SirSamuelVimes · 13/12/2020 14:22

Rain rain rain here; a bit dispiriting. Am putting up more and more tinsel to counter the "meh" feelings. By the time Xmas hits my house will look like a grotto!

Went to see Santa yesterday - INDOORS! Little play followed by a meet and greet. Family groups sat in distanced clusters. No masks for under 11s, adults were meant to be masked up throughout but by the end of the performance (about 45min) at least half of the parents had slipped them off. Was fab to see. I think in the real (non MN) world far more people wear them on sufferance and will ditch them as soon as possible.
