Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

Holding back the Years - Simply Red 💔

What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin was the only record I could bear after my son was stillborn as it felt like the only words that spoke to me and This Little Bird by Marianne Faithful was the one I chose for his funeral. If I hear either now it breaks me.

Separate ways. Elvis.
I see a change is coming to our lives
It's not the same as it used to be
And it's not too late to realize our mistake
We're just not right for each other
Love has slipped away left us only friends
We almost seem like strangers
All that's left between us are the memories we shared
Of times we thought we cared for each other
There's nothing left to do but go our separate ways
And pick up all the pieces left behind us
And maybe someday, somewhere along the way
Another love will find us
Some day when she's older
Maybe she will understand
Why her mom and dad are not together
The tears that she will cry when
I have to say goodbye
Will tear at my heart forever
There's nothing left to do but go our separate ways
And pick up all the pieces left behind us
And maybe someday, somewhere along the way
Another love will find us

Softly as I leave you. Story of how a man didn't want his wife to see him die so wrote a note when she fell asleep

And as my lovely dog is now past 14 Old shep makes me sob, I had to pull over the other day , was in bits

Nothing Compares 2 You by Sinead O'Connor
Everybody Hurts by REM. I heard this on the radio just after my dad died and it was just how I felt, so i sat therebawling. Now it just reminds me of that.
There are plenty more that sends shivers down my spine, but not cry. Hallelujah is one. The Jeff Buckley version, especially, beautiful. And A Different Corner by George Michael.

Spidey66 · 09/12/2020 23:07

@Lozz22

This woman's work- Kate Bush Don't give up- Kate Bush and Peter Cetera. Played that a lot when I was being bullied at school
Wasn't it Peter Gabriel?
Somethingkindaoooo · 09/12/2020 23:11

HarrietPotterska · 09/12/2020 23:12

Asleep - The Smiths

ronconcoke · 09/12/2020 23:17

Have tears in my eyes after reading this thread from the top. So many sad stories.

For me, Hurt by Cristina Aguilera and also, there's an Argentinian singer called Piero who sang a beautiful song called "Mi Viejo", ("My old man"). It's on one of my (also South American) husband's Spotify playlists and I can't listen to it without welling up. Of course you have to be able to understand the Spanish lyrics but it is just so sad.

Our song was always Please don’t go by KC and the Sunshine Band.

If you leave
At least in my lifetime
I had one dream come true
I was blessed to be loved
By someone as wonderful you
Please don’t go.

I held myself together at my darling husbands funeral til we got to those lines.

Littlesparrow0 · 09/12/2020 23:52

@mellongoose

This Woman's Work by Kate Bush also.

Pregnant with our second, early on, I was a little bit hormonal and cried in the kitchen when it came on. DH and I had a cuddle everything was fine.

20 week scan. It all went wrong. We had to terminate and I delivered our second girl sleeping. I miss her so much and this is what I listen to when I need a good cry about her.

@mellongoose massive virtual hug. Cant imagine how horrific that must have been. x
VienneseWhirligig · 10/12/2020 00:26

Sunshine on Leith. Me and DH went to see the musical not long before he died, and he was in tears during this song. He said that he hadn't realised how difficult it must have been for me, and seeing the scene where the wife is sat by her husband's bedside not knowing if he will survive, it suddenly hit him how I must have felt. I haven't been able to listen to it since.

Asleep - The Smiths
Asleep sends shivers down my spine its so beautiful.

Mine is Praying for time - george michael

nevernotstruggling · 10/12/2020 00:38

The theme song from birds of a feather with the little girls running around together in the grass. Makes me mourn my dds when they were tiny and all the shit I had to go through to survive instead of just playing with them. Makes me think of what will be their memories of each other though - they are best friends.

Only You, The Flying Pickets version. It's played at Xmas time and it's a special song between a close friend and I. It makes me feel deeply the passing of time and getting older, what might have been.

Needhelp101 · 10/12/2020 00:42

So, so many of these already mentioned.

I'll add Amy McDonald's Your Time Will Come.
"And your smile is not like mine, it disappears from time to time
But I believe in you, and everything you'll ever do"

wishfull888 · 10/12/2020 10:11

Bendita tu Luz reminds me of my dad.

Somewhere over the rainbow.

When I grow up from Matilda the musical. My daughter was a baby at the time & it made me think of her innocence.

HappydaysArehere · 10/12/2020 10:18

There’ll be blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover.
Especially the line “and Jimmy will sleep in his own little bed once more”. We had a Jimmy who was evacuated and his mother, my gran, wept every time that song came on. Vera Lynn had so much emotion in her voice. I bought the cd with her songs but cried so much I couldn’t listen to it.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 10/12/2020 10:24

Tina Turner - Talk to my heart

It's an album track from the cd 24/7. It totally describes how I felt when I was (unwittingly) falling in love with my husband when he was my boyfriend. If I hear it now I get a lump in my throat. (We're still together and it's all good.)

Some of the reasons for people finding these songs moving is heart breaking.

Wires by Athlete reminds me of when my mum was in hospital.

Also, Fix You by Cold Play 'tears stream down your face when you lose something you cannot replace'

Sums up how I felt and still feel about her death from cancer.

MrsExpo · 10/12/2020 10:25

"That'll do" by Peter Gabriel. A tune from a really naff film, but it reduces me to a blob every time I hear it.

MrsExpo · 10/12/2020 10:26

Also ... Carry You by Tim Minchin .....
