Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

@Blueuggboots God yes The Sunshine of Your Smile ! Nobody I know remembers that song!

Miriel · 09/12/2020 20:49

Everybody Hurts by REM. The first time I heard it I was struggling with depression and I absolutely sobbed. Now I can't listen without getting a bit tearful.

Those Were the Days
The Day I Died (was the best day of my life...)

Also Abide With Me, although I'm not religious.

Welcome to the machine, pink Floyd.
Played at younger brothers funeral 2 years ago.

MrsGrindah · 09/12/2020 20:52

Oh fuck, I’ve just read the lyrics to White Wine in the Sun Sad

The first verse of Coldplay's Fix You kills me every time I hear it. DS has Muscular Dystrophy which means he's slowly losing all muscle function. The song came on the radio on the way back from dropping him off at school just after diagnosis. I had to stop the car because I couldn't see through the tears.

"When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse"

Well nearly every song mentioned now. But also, Live Forever (Oasis) many years ago I used to work a night shift and I'd get home about 4am and listen to a request show on the radio and one night some callers asked for a song for a friend who'd been in a crash and wasn't going to make it and the DJ played a really beautiful acoustic version and it's always stuck with me.

Then more recently, I don't want to talk about it (Everything but the girl) which was playing on the radio in the Uber we called to take us from the hospital after I'd just been told there was no heartbeat

ihavenoidea20 · 09/12/2020 21:20

I have soo many songs that make me cry.
More recently though my uncle took his own life and i cannot listen to Lemar - Never be another you, without absolutely bawling.

Michael Jackson - Gone too soon
Rascal flatts - why

Jojojo32 · 09/12/2020 21:21

Kelly Clarkson piece by piece

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 09/12/2020 21:24

Why by Annie Lennox, such raw emotion, and reminds me of saying goodbye to someone close to me.

Coat of Many Colours - Dolly Parton
Is Heaven Good Enough for You - Alison Moorer
The Green Fields of France - The Furies
The Dance - Garth Brooks
I love you because - Jim Reeves
Silver threads among the Gold - Foster and Allen

All remind me of my parents, who are both no longer with me, and growing up.

RosewoodBox · 09/12/2020 21:38

Also

I hope you Dance - Leeann Womack
There you'll be - Faith Hill.

BriarNorth · 09/12/2020 21:41

Someone’s Waiting For You- from the Rescuers. I have no idea why, but it makes me sob every time. I usually listen to it if I’ve had a rubbish day and need to have a cry!
Hilariously the opening lyric is “Be brave, little one.”
Soooo not brave when I hear that song!

StillMedusa · 09/12/2020 21:49

IsFinnRogersDead Thank you for that song.. HUGE TM fan here and never seen that before!

myneighboursarerude · 09/12/2020 21:51

Visions of Gideon by Sufjan Stevens.

booearing · 09/12/2020 22:04

Side by Travis
I lost my mum, dad and brother in just over 2 years and this song mostly reminds me of my brother as he played this a lot.
He had a muscle wasting disease and he played this over and over again.

And when time is running out, you wanna stay alive...We all live under the same sky
We all will live, we all will die
There is no wrong, there is no right
The circle only has one side

ImWorriedAboutThis · 09/12/2020 22:13

@Hoppinggreen

Marshmallow, Happy. I had a dog the same as the one in the video and he was always there for me growing up, was the one I spoke to when things were shitty at school and/or at home. We got DD one of the same breed when she was the age I was when I got mine and he provides her with emotional support too. The video had me in such a state that I only need to hear the song now to lose it
I absolutely love this song, but my god, the video had both me and DD in tears!
HarrietPotterska · 09/12/2020 22:17

There is a Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths. For me, the most beautiful love song ever written

IndiaMay · 09/12/2020 22:20

Never Went To Church by The Streets. Not a band you would usually think to cry to but my god it's well written.

Wasnt Expecing That by Jamie Lawson is the saddest song ever written and the video is heart breaking

HarrietPotterska · 09/12/2020 22:27

Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen's

HarrietPotterska · 09/12/2020 22:28

Actuality, Jeff Buckley's version more

TheFlis12345 · 09/12/2020 22:31

@NotPrude Supermarket Flowers isn’t about Ed’s mum dying, she’s still alive! It’s about his gran dying but written from his mum’s point of view.

Ozzie9523 · 09/12/2020 22:33

Sweet December Song by George Michael

ToffeeNotCoffee · 09/12/2020 22:37

I hope you Dance - Leeann Womack
There you'll be - Faith Hill.

Beautiful songs. Especially the line, 'time is a real and constant pressure.'

Lozz22 · 09/12/2020 22:39

This woman's work- Kate Bush
Don't give up- Kate Bush and Peter Cetera. Played that a lot when I was being bullied at school
