Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

There are a few from over the years, but recently Aron Wright's Look After You.

At the moment it's The Pogues, Fairytale of New York as it was my late Father's favourite and he would sing it in my Grandmothers Christmas morning with all the family there. My sister used to sing the Kirsty McCall part.

In the Steppes of Central Asia by Borodin. HAUNTINGLY beautiful. Absolute exquisite piece which moves me to tears and is incredibly evocative of a more innocent time of my life.

George Michaels Mothers Pride:

And all the husbands, all the sons, all the lovers gone
They make no difference
No difference in the end
Still hear the woman say your daddy died a hero
In the name of God and man

And his song, You Have Been Loved

But she just sits and counts the hours
Searching for her crime
So what's the use of pressing palms
If you won't keep such love from harm
It's a cruel world
You've so much to prove
And heaven helps the ones who wait for you

Angel sang by westlife.

I was pregnant with twins, saw the heartbeats on the screen. Two weeks later 2nd scan- no heartbeats.
It was the worst time of my life and this song came on the radio.
I can’t listen to it now.
My husband accidentally played it on his iTunes shuffle and I had to tell him to turn it off. Felt like my heart was being broken all over again.

Sailing, Rod Stewart (played at Mum's funeral)
Those Are The Days Of Our Lives - Freddie Mercury's swan song, made all the more emotional as it was released around the time my Dad died. I actually still can't listen to it and it's been several decades....Sad

As We Go Now by Fischy Music. Fischy Music were used a lot at assemblies at our kids primary school so we got to know their songs quite well.

This one takes me back to a tricky time in life and makes me cry every time. I can't even talk about it, it's ridiculous.
When ds2 left they sang it for parents at their leavers assembly. There is this line in it that says "May you realise how precious you are" and I looked at all these little kids standing up there singing their hearts out, and I knew there were 2 at least who had never been told by anyone out of school that they were precious and that broke my heart.

Daydream Believer, the Robson and Jerome cover. My Grandad used to introduce me to all sorts of music and this is the first song I ever remember wanting to listen to obsessively on repeat because I loved it THAT much. I was only about 4 but he was driving me back from my Aunt and Uncle’s (over 1 hour drive) and he played me this song on repeat ALL the way home. When I was a child this just made me happy but he died of cancer when I was 20 and it was one of the memories that made me realise what an utterly selfless, fantastic Grandad he was. It has come on at some odd moments in life and if I’m alone I’ll sing along like crazy whilst having a tear for him.

Also Ashley Campbell, Remembering. It’s the song she wrote whilst losing her Dad to Alzheimers. I had recently watched the documentary, Glen Campbell had recently died (an artist my Grandad had played to me) and my best friend had just lost her own Dad tragically young. We went to a country music festival and she did a cameo on the B stage, right in front of us. She sang a medley of Glen Campbell songs and then sang Remembering. It includes the line “Daddy don’t you worry, I’ll do the Remembering” and we just sobbed together.

Geraldine by Glasvegas.

Hits me right in the guts for a number of reasons. Mostly for the lyrics and the fact there is an actual Geraldine.

RosewoodBox · 10/12/2020 19:30

@DanielODonkey
Love Geraldine too! Daddy's Gone is another one that gets me too.

smismas · 10/12/2020 20:12

Time to say goodbye- we played it while scattering my Grandads ashes.

A thousand years by Christina Perri just because it's beautiful.

smismas · 10/12/2020 20:16

And 'we'll meet again' after VE Day. I missed my Mum and my Grandparents so much at that point!

I'm crying just reading this thread!

MynahBird · 11/12/2020 11:20

A Place Aside by Beth Orton. The album it's on came out just after I'd had a heartbreak. I used to play it on repeat and sob.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 11/12/2020 12:48

Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy, played at my DM’s funeral and even the first few bars have me sobbing.

Supermarket Flowers - Ed Sheehan, came out just after DM passed away, the song even mentions my DF’s name.

OP My DF is also a massive Dire Straits fan and Tunnel of Love always reminds me of him.

The Fray ~ How To Save A Life

trackydacks · 11/12/2020 19:59

@MrsExpo

Also ... Carry You by Tim Minchin .....
Oh this turned me into a teary mess when he sang it as an encore in his last tour. And fumbling for

DH also knows better than to play White Wine in the Sun when I’ve had a few wines at Christmas. As an Aussie a long way from home it also reduces me to a teary mess almost instantly

Wigisfashion83 · 11/12/2020 20:08

Cosmic Love- Florence and the Machine
The drugs don't work- The Verve

Annie's song regularly brings me to tears.
