Crumpets. Do any other countries have them ?

I've just bought some for the first time in ages. Somehow, crumpets strike me as a very British thing but I don't know for certain.

Mine were 35p for six from Morrisons. They're nice and thick and less than half the price of Warburton's.

Australia/NZ have them Smile

Not a sniff of them here in Scandinavia. I have to make my own. I would seriously kill for a packet of Warburtons' right now.

Fightingitoff · 05/12/2020 15:15

I really want some crumpets now.

1940s · 05/12/2020 15:16

Nothing comes close to warburtons

SlightDrizzle · 05/12/2020 15:18

I’ve only ever encountered them in England. They’re vaguely disgusting, IMO.

Europilgrim · 05/12/2020 15:20

I really miss them and you can't get them where I live so I have made them once or twice.

Pipandmum · 05/12/2020 15:20

You can get them in the States. By the way, the English muffins there are far superior to the doughy ones here.

WildRosie · 05/12/2020 15:28

I've already scoffed a few of the Morrison's crumpets. Not quite as good as Warburton's but OK for just a few pence. I wonder if they're an Empire thing with them being found in Australia and New Zealand ?

I always considered English muffins to be the quintessential English afternoon tea tuck so it surprises me that the Americans do them better.

In Australia they are square not circle.

DH is French and they don't have them in France, at least he had never seen them before moving to the UK, or English muffins.

praepondero · 05/12/2020 15:58

Love crumpets, toasted with two! kinds of butter: the first lot - nice salt-crystally butter - must melt deeply into the tiny wells, then slabs of the same, but really cold butter to be placed on top and et volia, heart-attack on a plate but so worth it. Haven't had them for years Sad

Davros · 05/12/2020 16:04

Just going shopping. I've added them to my list

JassyRadlett · 05/12/2020 16:07

They bloody weren’t when I was growing up.

Mrsjayy · 05/12/2020 16:09

Scottish crumpets are different from English Crumbets ours are more like a large pancake but still holey

Your 1st description is exactly why i have a fear of crumpets!
JassyRadlett · 05/12/2020 16:10

I felt such an assault on my Australianness that I’ve just checked the Coles and Woolies websites. 😂

Round still seem to outnumber square.

I can’t believe I just did that. Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/12/2020 16:15

I've never heard of the big ones being called crumpets before MrsJayy

Mrsjayy · 05/12/2020 16:18

Have you not we have always called them crumpets for as long as I can remember.

DrDavidBanner · 05/12/2020 16:22

That big one looks like a staffordshire oatcake MrsJayy. Lush

LeSquigh · 05/12/2020 16:25

Pikelets are nicer - a thin crumpet but crunchier. Delicious. I let mine go cold though. And crumpets. Can’t be doing with melted butter 🤮

DrDavidBanner · 05/12/2020 16:37

I don't have any pikelets, crumpets or oatcakes Angry

Confusedismyname · 05/12/2020 16:38

I love the crumpet thins as I find the normal ones to thick. You’ve got me craving one now.

And some people are just psychopaths.

The best butter delivery ever.

Hohofortherobbers · 05/12/2020 16:40

I prefer pikelets too, wish I had some now

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/12/2020 16:41

the dutch have small pancakes 'poffertjes' which are a bit similar.
but those are mostly eaten warm with apple sauce and icing sugar.
