Crumpets. Do any other countries have them ?

I've just bought some for the first time in ages. Somehow, crumpets strike me as a very British thing but I don't know for certain.

Mine were 35p for six from Morrisons. They're nice and thick and less than half the price of Warburton's.

Oooh crumpets....(slopes off to ferret in the freezer on the off chance.)

Those giant crumpets warburtons do are disappointing. I don't know why.

But yes to twice toasting. They're good toasted on an open fire too!!

I like them lavishly buttered and with baked beans on top.

PassataQueenofBritain · 05/12/2020 18:02

When we lived in France, we bought crumpets from M&S.

PassataQueenofBritain · 05/12/2020 18:02

I want crumpets now!!

borntobequiet · 05/12/2020 18:06

@BestZebbie

I'm pretty sure you can get them in Narnia too (and I'd be amazed if they weren't available in the Shire).
I looked on the Tolkien Forum and the nearest thing I found to crumpets was bannocks in Rivendell (not the Shire). That’s a bit disappointing as crumpets seem to me to be ideal Hobbit food, and I thought I remembered them in one of the books. (I was obsessed - obsessed I say - with Tolkien from the age of 11 to 15.) www.thetolkienforum.com/threads/what-do-hobbits-eat-list-of-hobbit-meals.23443/

No Laiste those pics you posted are misleading! A pikelet is a thin crumpet. It has butter holes from top to bottom.

A scotch pancake is brown and smooth on one side, pale and holey on the other. And flatter. A pale imitation (metaphorically).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/12/2020 18:27

The brother of a German friend of mine (in the U.K.) used to take half a suitcase full of crumpets home to Germany after every visit!

Mangermaid · 05/12/2020 18:28

We call them pikelets where I'm from

joanwinifred · 05/12/2020 18:41

@pinkbalconyrailing

in germany you can get 'toastbrötchen' which are like english muffins.

But that's not a crumpet.

WildRosie · 05/12/2020 19:17

Not crumpets but related. Waffles are big in the USA but I'm not sure they're an American invention. I think they might be German or Austrian. I like them but I've never found them that easy to cook, finding I either over or under cook them.

I love crumpets. If I lived by myself I would eat them for dinner every day. Loads of butter.

DH prefers a proper meal. 😱

Davros · 05/12/2020 19:26

Target acquired. I've got some local smoked back bacon and 6 organic eggs from the Farmers' Market I went to today. I may go to bed now so I can have my brekkie ASAP. But I'm drinking wine and eating pork scratchings now. Life's tough sometimes

brittanyfairies · 05/12/2020 19:26

Crumpets are the one thing I miss while living in France. I tried to make my own in lockdown but Warburton's are the best crumpets in the world.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/12/2020 19:27

Tell him about the Eggy Crumpet, PoppyOppy. It's like eggy bread, but.... with a crumpet.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/12/2020 19:27

Or four.

Lipz · 05/12/2020 19:35

We have them in Ireland, we call them muffins. I only like them on a mcdonalds breakfast.

lakesideadvent · 05/12/2020 20:48

I like scotch crumpets but haven't seen them outside Scotland.
I can get English crumpets in the US but only in one shop.
English muffins in contrast are everywhere and used in breakfast meals a lot.

Davros · 05/12/2020 21:24

Lipz muffins (as on McDonald's breakfast) and crumpets are very different

Bandol · 05/12/2020 21:36

I can get crumpets in my local Carrefour supermarket in France, but they aren’t great. Better than nothing though. I was going to try making some but don’t have any crumpet rings, unsurprisingly couldn’t find crumpet rings in the supermarket, and my biscuit cutters are plastic so cannot stand in for crumpet rings.

We can get English muffins in my local supermarkets. At Intermarche they are made in France and terrible. But Leclerc and Carrefour’s are made in the UK and pretty decent.

WildRosie · 05/12/2020 22:05

I predict many folk buying crumpets at their next shop. Or muffins, pikelets, waffles, Irish soda farls, currant teacakes and so on. Apparently, slightly-past-its-best Christmas cake can be toasted and buttered too so remember to leave some to go stale or buy another cake. Butter is a must - accept no substitute.

You can buy them in Ireland (and I have) but I don't know that they're as identifiable. They're in the supermarket yes, but fewer people here, out of a hundred could if asked ''name this carb'' ! ykwim.
