Crumpets. Do any other countries have them ?

I've just bought some for the first time in ages. Somehow, crumpets strike me as a very British thing but I don't know for certain.

Mine were 35p for six from Morrisons. They're nice and thick and less than half the price of Warburton's.

South Africa has them, but they're called "flapjacks" there, somewhat confusingly! (Our flapjacks here are called crunchies there.)

You sure as shit can’t get them here in Denmark :(

I’ve ordered them a few times off a British food website but I begrudge paying £2.79 a pack!

bruffin · 05/12/2020 16:50

I made some crumpets once , they were really light but still thick.
May make some tomorrow!

queenofarles · 05/12/2020 16:52

I’ve seen something similar in Morocco, they are called Baghrir and they are delicious, they are a spongy Kind of pancakes , eaten with honey and butter. Yum!

Franke · 05/12/2020 16:52

Can’t get them in Germany. I tried to make my own once. Only once.

annabell22 · 05/12/2020 16:53

I buy M&S crumpets for the equivalent of £2.50 for 6, which is cheaper than the ones in Waitrose. Expensive, but needs must.

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/12/2020 16:53

in germany you can get 'toastbrötchen' which are like english muffins.

Franke · 05/12/2020 16:57

pinkbalconyrailing I’d forgotten about those. You can even get them in Aldi along with a passable cheddar and very thin english bacon.

baubling · 05/12/2020 17:04

@Mrsjayy

Scottish crumpets are different from English Crumbets ours are more like a large pancake but still holey
Are they called pikelets?
JustAnotherUserinParadise · 05/12/2020 17:04

My sister lives in Germany and we post them to her!

LoveFall · 05/12/2020 17:04

We have them in Canada. I love them toasted with butter and honey.

blacksax · 05/12/2020 17:08

@SlightDrizzle

I’ve only ever encountered them in England. They’re vaguely disgusting, IMO.
You need to toast them until they are brown and crispy, I reckon. Having had doughy undercooked flabby ones courtesy of MIL on more than one occasion, I know what you mean about vaguely disgusting.
MooseBeTimeForSummer · 05/12/2020 17:13

Yup. Can get them here in northern Canada.

WildRosie · 05/12/2020 17:15

Crumpets aren't really suitable for pop-up toasters as the inside needs to cook to some degree as well. They're best put under a medium to hot grill and turned every now and then to ensure the insides and outsides are properly done.

I am confused by living abroad so long... but I think that what are called crumpets in Britain was called 'English muffin' when I was growing up in California. What are called breakfast muffins in Britain we also call English muffins in California.

borntobequiet · 05/12/2020 17:21

In Morocco you can get a sort of breakfast pancake/crumpet called a beghir.
Almost the most delicious things I have ever eaten.

WaltzingBetty · 05/12/2020 17:25

@Mrsjayy

Stock image I've not been baking
Isn't that a crumpet and a scotch pancake?
Laiste · 05/12/2020 17:31

I adore crumpets Grin
I did an experiment with lots of different brands one year and Warbourtons were the best IMO.

I adore muffins as well actually. I tend to forget about them ...

BestZebbie · 05/12/2020 17:32

I'm pretty sure you can get them in Narnia too (and I'd be amazed if they weren't available in the Shire).

MozzchopsThirty · 05/12/2020 17:32

I learnt on MN years ago that you should double or triple toast them
This changed my life Smile

Laiste · 05/12/2020 17:33

Aren't scotch pancakes the smallish round flat things? Smooth and brown on one side and pale on the other. Eaten cold and buttered. Do they call them blinis too? Or is that something else again?

Mrsjayy · 05/12/2020 17:35

Yes that's a scotch pancake Laiste I didn't mean to start a crumpet debate Grin

Laiste · 05/12/2020 17:43

Mrsjayy Grin
I can't think of anything nicer right now than a gentle crumpet debate :)

TheSpottedZebra · 05/12/2020 17:50

You don't see pikelets as much these days do you?
In days of yore, they used to be in most supermarkets, next to crumpets. Now they're as rare as hens' teeth.

Broken Britain Sad
