Crumpets. Do any other countries have them ?

I've just bought some for the first time in ages. Somehow, crumpets strike me as a very British thing but I don't know for certain.

Mine were 35p for six from Morrisons. They're nice and thick and less than half the price of Warburton's.

After many years of toasted crumpets with butter, jam and other accompaniments, have recently discovered God tier crumpets.

Make an egg mix of your choice (I go for beaten egg, milk, garlic and herbs) then dunk the untoasted crumpets so they are fully soaked. Heat a pan with butter and fry holey side down for a few minutes. Flip, and then coat the holey, face up side with grated cheese. Put a lid on the pan so the pan will act as a mini-oven and the bottom will fry off while the cheese on top melts. Serve with sauce of choice.

Epic.

Really want crumpets now Blush always have them with butter and a thick layer of cream cheese. Yum!

Flamingolingo · 05/12/2020 22:38

@TheSpottedZebra sainsburys sell pikelets, bought some this morning.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/12/2020 22:39

@WildRosie

I predict many folk buying crumpets at their next shop. Or muffins, pikelets, waffles, Irish soda farls, currant teacakes and so on. Apparently, slightly-past-its-best Christmas cake can be toasted and buttered too so remember to leave some to go stale or buy another cake. Butter is a must - accept no substitute.
True, but xmas cake even better fried in butter.
TheSpottedZebra · 05/12/2020 22:40

Do they, Flamingo? Excellent. That is,mid you haven't bought them ALL.

Northernsoullover · 05/12/2020 22:41

Crumpets taste best when on the brink of being burnt. It is usually achieved by a double toasting but something a third is required. Served with butter or golden syrup. Food of the gods

Fontella · 05/12/2020 22:45

I always have crumpets in the house. So superior to ordinary toast! Real butter always. I had a couple with a lunch time bowl of soup today.

My kids like theirs with fried or poached eggs on top with creamy yokes. Just like you'd do eggs on toast but crumpets instead. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

Warburtons are the best I've found so far, but even they aren't as good as the ones we used to have in Ye Olden Days when I was a kid. I've never found a modern day equivalent to those. And we really did used to toast them over the open fire with a long handled toasting fork.

I can get crumpets in a few local stores in the US. The ones I can regularly get are terrible but Aldi occasionally does them as a special, so that's when I buy a few packs. Not cheap though!

wowfudge · 05/12/2020 23:12

I am regretting not buying crumpets in the supermarket earlier. Crumpets are fabulous and have to be well toasted.

grassisjeweled · 05/12/2020 23:14

They have them here in Canada. Keeps the expats from rioting

Inthetropics · 05/12/2020 23:16

Never had one. I'm brazilian and there are no crumpets here!

WiseOwlWan · 05/12/2020 23:19

Christmas cake fried in butter? Wow. I want to tey that. Is it a scottish recipe?

WrongKindOfFace · 05/12/2020 23:20

@pinkbalconyrailing

the dutch have small pancakes 'poffertjes' which are a bit similar. but those are mostly eaten warm with apple sauce and icing sugar.
Poffertjes are nothing like crumpets. They’re more of a small, very puffy pancake.

I really want crumpets now.

PodgeBod · 05/12/2020 23:24

I really want crumpets now. We have them in 90% of the time but I didn't get any with the last shop. They have to be Warburtons. We usually just have them buttered for breakfast but for an evening snack you can't beat cheesy crumpets or slathered with butter and chocolate spread.

PodgeBod · 05/12/2020 23:25

The reason they have to he Warburtons is growing up my mum got Morrisons own and half the time they were raw in the middle [lShock have also seen this with Asda own

I was just going to say this! A warm floppy crumpet just won’t do. Got to be as near to just under burnt as you can get.

wowfudge · 05/12/2020 23:33

Left over Christmas pudding fried in butter is also delicious.

Nothing more disappointing than a flacid crumpet.

Er yes, I am Scottish.

I adore crumpets! I live in Utah USA and they are not easy to find where I live and when I can they are really expensive. When we lived in the Midwest they were easier to find. During the sourdough craze I’ve made some with the discard and silicone “egg rings” and they turned out really well.

I for one do not like what we call “English Muffins” here, to me they are dry. Also, in Utah they have “English muffin bread” which the batter is poured into a bread pan and baked - it’s super heavy! I’m not a fan of that either.

WildRosie · 06/12/2020 08:14

Co-op Sourdough crumpets were rather good the last time I bought them.

Lidl have excellent pikelets.

I am in bed and have just eaten one with butter and Marmite. DH brings me a pikelet every morning with a cup of tea.

I shall not LTB.

ImRealHonest · 06/12/2020 08:32

UAE here - I can get them from M&S and waitrose. Own brand only.

Sometimes one of the non-British supermarkets gets warburtons ones in, but they’re around £8 a pack of 6. Still buy them though.

Sid James: 'I hate crumpets. You think there's nothing on 'em, bite, and whoosh - butter straight down your chin!'
