Crumpets. Do any other countries have them ?

I've just bought some for the first time in ages. Somehow, crumpets strike me as a very British thing but I don't know for certain.

Mine were 35p for six from Morrisons. They're nice and thick and less than half the price of Warburton's.

I love crumpets but never seen them in Italy, where I am from.

anameIcallmyself · 06/12/2020 08:46

@namechange34

In Australia they are square not circle.

DH is French and they don't have them in France, at least he had never seen them before moving to the UK, or English muffins.

We have both round and square crumpets here in Australia. The round ones were available for decades before the square ones were introduced.

OK. Has anyone actually got a fail safe recipe? I've found one from Paul Hollywood. Another on thespruceeats.com which looks quite promising but I'd prefer a mumsnet recommendation. 🙏

I don't have it to hand but I remember seeing a crumpet recipe in Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course. It's probably online somewhere.

@wowfudge

Left over Christmas pudding fried in butter is also delicious.
It’s REALLY good if fried in brandy butter. That’s is our invariable Boxing Day breakfast!!
Franke · 06/12/2020 09:10

WildRosie thank you, but I think that's the recipe I tried once and it really didn't work for me. Probably my fault because Delia's recipes are usually flawless. I think I'm just not good with yeast.

But look what I've found www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/recipes/a32432511/warburtons-crumpets-recipe/

I shall try them and report back.

@Mrsjayy is absolutely right, in Scotland a crumpet is a large flat holey pancake - butter and jam and sandwiched together Smile. A scotch pancake's English equivalent is a drop scone. All delicious.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 06/12/2020 09:47

Mmmm crumpets.
If you put them in the toaster you have to have it turned up really high. Then your DH gets the hump because he didn't bother to check when he made his breakfast and now has squares of pure carbon instead of toast.

Nothing more disappointing than a flaccid crumpet

Too true. Too true.

wowfudge · 06/12/2020 09:59

I've made Delia's crumpets and they work. The only thing I would say is that you could tell it had the bicarb you put it to create the bubbles and therefore the holes before you fry them. I don't think you can taste it in bought crumpets.

WildRosie · 06/12/2020 10:04

Good luck Franke. The only yeast I ever use is the dried granular stuff which I use to make pizza dough. It only needs to be stirred into the flour, straight from the packet.

Yesterday I bought some crumpets in the shape of Christmas trees 🎄from M&S. Have already had two, with butter and marmite - bliss!

What? Not where I grew up it wasn't! (Nr Inverness)
Crumpets were, and still are, crumpets.

Franke · 06/12/2020 13:41

Well, they aren't half bad. I got about six out of the recipe. And they remind me of home The other recipes I found all used milk. These just used water.

Well I stick by my crumpets 😂 btw they are delicious fried with streaky bacon and An egg !

Mrbob · 06/12/2020 13:48

I don’t know what they do differently but Australian crumpets are somehow subtly different to British ones. I had to buy and eat many packets in the name of research to make sure I wasn’t imagining it Grin

Deathraystare · 06/12/2020 13:51

I have been wondering if the Ethiopian bread Injeera made with teff flour is anything like a crumpet in texture. I have never tried it but am sure I read that it is a spongey texture with holes. Any Ethiopians/ people that have eaten it - can you verify this??

AliceMadHatter · 06/12/2020 13:53

trypophobic person here - I can not even look at them.

fatkitchen · 06/12/2020 13:55

Yes but under different names
