Yesterday was The Day Of The Port.

This is an annual event, normally following our village carol service. Sadly both DH and I are much lighter drinkers than in days gone by, and today has been a trauma on a number of levels.

In other news we have bought DDog1 a rug for in front of the fire. I'm violently opposed to anything that dog hair could stick to and thus require further hoovering, but DDog1 slips sometimes when he gets up from the fire. DDogs all seem very happy with the new purchase.

TenCornMaidens · 07/12/2020 14:25

@soddingkitten I ALSO had an annoying absence of Fitbit for a couple of days because I left it on the charger.

I think we win dullest news.

MissConductUS · 07/12/2020 14:40

Spudlet That's awful. I also run alone and usually in the dark. I do run on a loop road in a suburban real estate development, so am always withing sight of several houses. I have a short drive to get there but it's worth it to be off the main road.

Can you change your route?

Spudlet · 07/12/2020 14:45

@MissConductUS It's terrible, isn't it? And it's so cold, the poor bloke could have frozen if he hadn't have come round. It's made me so angry.

I am lucky to have a choice of routes but they're all pretty isolated - I won't go to the woods for a while. But it's not easy to avoid isolated bits. I don't normally feel scared, as a woman running alone, but I do right now. And really sad for the poor man who got robbed too.

MissConductUS · 07/12/2020 15:00

@Spudlet Can you get something like these in the UK?

www.amazon.com/bear-spray/s?k=bear+spray&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

What time of day was the mugging and when do you usually run?

silkiecat · 07/12/2020 15:12

Spudlet That's horrible. I just had to advise DD not to run where its not visible and ideally daylight though hard this time of year.

I've managed to get geography and a bit of RS done with DS and discussed English and maths quickly but not done any real work yet. He's completely fascinated by working out who has covid and which class caused him to do off, looks like an options subject again as only him and one other off in the 2 classes today.

Spudlet · 07/12/2020 16:11

I don't think we can, @MissConductUS. And tbh if someone creeps up in me I wouldn't be able to get it out in time anyway. The mugging was at 3.30, so just before it got dark and I prefer to run mid-morning - it's just a nasty thing to happen, you know? Hopefully they'll find whoever it was, until then I'll have to run elsewhere and stop listening to podcasts or music I guess.

I love ddog dearly, but I really wish he was a bit bigger and scarier looking sometimes!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 07/12/2020 17:20

DS's school announced as they can't have a service and celebration (songs, performances etc.) as usual, they will have a full school day instead. Grin

TheySeeHerRowling · 07/12/2020 17:21

Left it too late to book a wash, cut and blow dry before Christmas, so I've had to book a wash & cut instead

Not looking forward to walking home with wet hair

Taswama · 07/12/2020 17:37

I have left my phone at work (charging nicely out of sight). So I will have to go in specially to pick it up tomorrow. Luckily I live in the same town I work in.

Nydj · 07/12/2020 18:02

@Spudlet, that’s horrible. I hope they catch whoever it was soon.

I hope that @soddingkitten, you are feeling better today and that @MissConductUS, your DD is ok.

DS has a mild toothache - we think it’s just his wisdom teeth cutting through but are keeping tabs on it just in case it’s something like an infection.

silkiecat · 07/12/2020 18:11

DH just raised two very important questions at one point did Muller make a blueberry yoghurt? Yes they did. Have the discontinued it or are Sainsburys and Coop just not stocking it? Answers on a postcard please.

MissConductUS · 07/12/2020 19:03

@Nydj DD got up for breakfast the morning just as I was leaving, so that I could make it for her. I also checked her pupil reactivity and handgrip strength. I think she'll be fine. She has a hard head, just like her mum. Smile

Your DS is about the age when the wisdom teeth become an issue. Mine had all of his out at 18, which is a bit early, but it was good to get it out of the way.

Welcome @TheySeeHerRowling and thanks for sharing your news. Your salon must be very popular if they can't fit in a blow dry for you.

TheySeeHerRowling · 07/12/2020 19:45

Thanks for the welcome, MissConductUS, with the year I'm having, dull news is the best news

Spudlet that's worrying - I've had to give up running while the mornings and evenings are so dark

EggyPegg · 07/12/2020 21:33

@Spudlet, that's awful. I hope they catch the person soon.

Nothing of note in Eggy Towers. I tried ringing the two carpenters that I rang at the end of last week AGAIN today. Still no answer. The third I rang popped round on Friday to look at the house and filled DH with horror with comments of needing insulation for the loft that was 'expensive at £75 a sheet'. When I got home from work I attempted to calm DH by reminding him that insulation was an expected expense, and that we needed him to define how big each sheet was before determining if it actually is expensive. £75 for a a sheet that's 6 inches wide would be expensive. For one that's 5 foot wide, not so much. Any experience here appreciated.

DS1 had a Zoom drum lesson today. Our internet cut out halfway through so I reconnected using my phone instead of the laptop. Turns out that the camera, microphone and speakers on my phone are far superior to the same on my laptop. Now kicking myself for six months worth of crap quality Zoom lessons over lockdown. Won't make that mistake again.

halfpasteleven · 07/12/2020 21:41

@Squirrel26 thanks for the update on the doors.. I'm quite disappointed you weren't there to give your running commentary this weekend as I enjoyed it last time.Maybe they will be back this week while you are there to do more essential maintenance? (Crosses fingers)

That's desperate news @Spudlet - I hope you can still continue to run and do it safely- I get that you're angry- a run is meant to clear your head not stress you out even more..

I have no news - it's foggy here all day and all evening so I caught up on the laundry instead of doing the weekly shop. Boring but there's something quite soothing about folding clothes that are still warm from the dryer.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 07/12/2020 21:48

I nearly forgot that I have to book 'bloods' and an ECG for DS bc of his medication - put it on top of my to do list.

The rest of DH's papers, having left the sofa, are now cluttering up 1/3 of the big table, half of a side table, a kitchen bench and my IKEA raskög. He can't do files before christmas.

EggyPegg · 08/12/2020 06:49

@Squirrel26. Presumably they will need to replace the rest of the doors so that they all match? I certainly hope so.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus
Are you never tempted to gather them all up and dump them in a basket for him to ignore? On the bright side, at least you have more sofa seating space now.

DS2 has an opticians appointment this afternoon. It was supposed to be DS1s annual check up (but with a new optician) but as he's currently isolating they let DS2 have the slot instead as he keeps saying his eyes hurt. I am certain he won't need glasses but it doesn't hurt to be sure.

Champagneforeveryone · 08/12/2020 07:49

Today is my last day off and I have approximately 2149 odd jobs to do. There's a thick frost outside which is a prime opportunity to use my heated windscreen. DS will of course decline to wear anything warmer than his denim jacket and I will shake my head in a despairing manner. It appears my transformation into my mother is almost complete.

DH has put the ironing board hook up. It is all I hoped it would be, except the ironing board needs to be hung upside down from it which is baffling.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/12/2020 08:59

How do you hang an ironing board upside down? We have two hooks, I think they're intended for hanging bikes, and they're the right width apart to hook the iron-rest end over them. It's a lot better than having it fall over and block access to the utility room which is what was happening before.

Squirrel26 · 08/12/2020 09:45

That’s awful @Spudlet. Why would someone do something like that? Angry

I do hope the rest of the doors will be replaced so that they match. They seem to have now moved on to messing about in the corridor with copper pipes though, so I’m not sure it’s high on the priority list.

There are some men in the car park in full-on high-vis head to toe waterproofs digging a big hole. They ‘apologise for the inconvenience caused by steam recovery works.’ I’m not sure why we are recovering steam. I don’t work in a power station. Also, why is there steam underneath the car park??

TheySeeHerRowling · 08/12/2020 10:17

I'm EXCITED this morning because my local Tesco Metro has the tuna and sweetcorn sandwich back after a 6 week absence

My once-a-week meal deal treat may resume! (Dream combo = tuna&sweetcorn sandwich, beef McCoys, blue spirulina juice)

Champagneforeveryone · 08/12/2020 10:46

blackamericano I suspect there is no actual upside down when it comes to ironing boards, more that it's the opposite way to the way I would hang it. In any case it's behind the door so I can choose to ignore it.

I'm off to the post office now to post DM's Christmas presents as she is alone for Christmas this year. I will also deliver our village Christmas cards.

I pumped the car tyres up earlier and bought kiwi fruit in Waitrose. DS has been wearing braces for three years now and is unable to eat apples, pears etc (also known as the boring fruit) They're due off in the new year and I foresee a great financial saving as I will no longer have to shell out for brace friendly soft fruit.

And ChampagneCat is goading DDog3. Given DDog3's irascible nature this seems like a poor life choice, however ChampagneCat is fast so has that in her favour.

TenCornMaidens · 08/12/2020 12:04

I unsubscribed to a LOT of email tat this morning.

silkiecat · 08/12/2020 12:39

I've managed to do 1.5x English and 2 x business studies with DS this morning Shock Though school are sending masses through so we also have 2x science and 2x French to get through, not sure why we are getting double the normal amount today but better than less. DS normally won't speak or write in business studies so his teacher will be a bit Shock I didn't tell him it was business studies.

DH has been wfh then just had an hour's nap. About to have lunch of bacon sandwiches for the boys and bacon and egg for me.

I've ordered a tiny real Christmas tree in a pot and lights for our room (as kids said no real trees downstairs though anticipating it being snaffled on arrival despite "bugs"), tarp for the chicken run due to new regs and a light bulb.
