Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2020 15:42

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

Ooh re: anal sex, isn't it true that Vaseline rots condoms?
That is, if you're using one Grin

I mostly use nivea blue tub, but I'm very dry and a layer of any of the vaseline type products on top does help. I wear this under make up and it keeps me from looking and feeling dry.

But my top tip is the Nivea white tub. Being a lighter formula you can mix essential oils into it. I then pipe this into my nice dispensers for delicious smelling lotions.

Ladymayns · 01/12/2020 23:08

Not tried the O’Keefe lip balm but the green tub cream Working Hands they do is brilliant for really dry cracked skin on hands and feet

My go to miracle balm is Decleor Night Balm, it heals everything, cracked lips, irritated skin, sores, bites, I take it everywhere

Coconut oil is great on breakouts, elbows and knees too. Cheap and my cat loves it, she is allowed a tiny bit off my nail now and again.

MingeofDeath · 02/12/2020 08:38

Baby bee's universal ointment is a great substitute for those who don't want to use oil by products on their skin.

WhoWants2Know · 02/12/2020 09:12

A few posters have mentioned dry, peeling, irritated skin around their lips. I used to get that terribly, and it turned out to be a reaction to mint toothpaste. I swapped to kids fruit-flavoured toothpaste and rarely ever need lip balm now.

Yes! Any oil based lube such as baby lotion, or vaseline will rot a latex condom.

DH is a big advocate of vicks on feet and I always took the piss. Probably placebo but I did try it a while back when I had a cold and I felt a lot better the next morning.

If I might just say I think that "old wives tale" is a derogatory term to our sex but modern women use it often and without thinking about it

I don't agree. It was always women who talked about hat stuff, who had folk remedies and superstitions and the like. It wasn't the men.
Is there anything inherently derogatory about being a wife, or a woman? Or old for that matter, though old could mean historically rather than the women were old.....

I think that poster might mean because people use that phrase to mean 'load of nonsense'. Like its just something the silly women used to do, nothing we should be taking notice of etc.
teateateateateamoretea · 02/12/2020 12:04

But thats not actually what it means, specifically. So complaining somehting is sexist because you don;t know what it actually means is rather silly, wouldn't you say?

I didn't say that's what it means, I said it's how it's used. Not reading and/or comprehending someone's message and being argumentative about it is rather silly.
teateateateateamoretea · 02/12/2020 12:10

Well then people should stop using it wrong. And complaining about it.
People really will complain about everything.

Only on Mumsnet can an innocuous conversation about Vaseline descend into this! God, I love this place!

On a fire safety course a few years back, the trainer cited a female check-out assistant at Tesco whose nylon panties (yup, he used that word) 'sparked' on the plastic swivel seat and she had very slight burns down below. I don't know if it was true or who actually checked her over but it was certainly the most interesting on the list as a possible cause of fire.

(and back to Vaseline ...)

100% Vicks on the soles off your feet does stop you coughing at night. It's nothing to do with smelling/breathing it in.

By what mechanism does it work then?

I love how this thread has had five or six tangents but somehow still makes total sense! Grin

@venustiger we had that book! My absolute favourite as a child. I remember the slipper picture vividly

Magic, obviously.

But work it does - I can confirm it, too.

Loving this thread!

Everyone always tells me I have amazing skin, and I have a stack of cheap products for me and the fam, so here are my hacks:

Vaseline - every single day! Love this stuff on my lips. Occasionally for hands, but I don’t use it on my face and find it’s too greasy under make up. Going to try the face mask tonight!!! Agree, this is a great make up remover
Sudocrem - any breakouts, use this as a face mask or just on the odd spot when needed and DO NOT pick your skin. Any spots will be gone overnight. I promise! If you want to wear it in the day, mix with aqueous cream or your usual day cream.
SPF - wear spf 15 every day. Ensure your day cream has this in. Anything higher can be a corrosive apparently, but obviously higher spf for the beach (they do 100% natural reef safe ones too now)
Bio oil - for body, not face if you’re prone to out breaks. I find it clogs my skin.
Bepanthen - great for new tattoos apparently!
Cocoa butter - Palmer’s do an awesome one for the body and face. Can’t go wrong! Just added one with vitamin c in to my xmas list Grin
Vicks - on babies, mix it with Vaseline. I use the foot trick too. Seems to work for us!
Tiger balm - great for headaches and as a muscle rub (avoid sensitive areas)
Olive oil - for a hair mask (sleep with a towel over your pillow)
Coconut oil - for EVERYTHING- hair, hands, feet, body, face, and for sex Wink it also works as a post shave or wax oil. Removes make up too.
Lavender essential oil - for grumpy babies and parents, add a drop or two in the bath or on the bed sheets (careful with using scented oils on babies though, so read up before doing this)
Lansinoh nipple cream - great for lips

Going to check out some of the other recommendations for sure!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 02/12/2020 21:00

I'm also a dry, crispy person and Vaseline works wonders for a chapped nose, dry eye bags etc.

I use it on my nose when I have a cold and it’s gone all dry from blowing so much. I never thought about it as an eye cream though! I don’t really have bags but do have fine lines which I think is mostly because my under eye is so dry.
Going to try Vaseline for a few nights!

You can confirm that you think it works, is all.
