Vaseline: How did I get to 53 before knowing I could do this?

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2020 15:42

My skin is very dry and prone to spots (thank you menopause).

On a whim I decided to try rubbing in some Vaseline - OMG it’s great! I’ve now added a thin layer below my makeup and the difference is remarkable.

Am I late to the party? And what else so I need to know?

Cannot load pic! You tease!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/12/2020 17:28

@Umpteennamechanges hmm. Could be that one. I'll have to investigate. Knowing my luck I'll pay a fortune for a book and then my copy will turn up in Mums attic Grin
Luckily DS2 has inherited my love of books and creepy mysteries so he's happy to keep being given copies of the 'wrong book' Grin
I used to scare myself stupid reading it and then refuse to sleep with the light off.
That leg picture gives me chills. Grin

I find it’s good and so is Bio oil

LoveandHateWhatABeautifulComb - ever heard of Relexology??

I've used vaseline as an eye cream for years now, saw an article on it and have been using it ever since. I'm 49 and have very few undereye wrinkles

Craftylittlething · 01/12/2020 17:52

It works a treat for lighting fires. We use it on cotton wool instead of fire lighters, saves a small fortune

LoveandHateWhatABeautifulComb - ever heard of Relexology??

Yep. It's mostluy bunkum, but reflexology is about pressure points, not pretending you can absorb smells through your feet Hmm

For the worst dry, winter, chapped lips, try Lansinoh (for when you’re breastfeeding). It’s cheaper in the long run than buying Lanolips.

Nohomemadecandles · 01/12/2020 18:06

@TiaandTamera I'm giggling like a snorty idiot! That's made my night.

Although I'm sure it's not true!

tommyhoundmum · 01/12/2020 18:10

If I might just say I think that "old wives tale" is a derogatory term to our sex but modern women use it often and without thinking about it.

MushMonster · 01/12/2020 18:11

I only can use it as overnight cream. I wake up with much better skin.
But I cannot put anything on top of it. It is shiny and sticky for long time on my skin.

Username1983 · 01/12/2020 18:17

Some others have mentioned it, but weleda skin food was a game changer for me. I have horrific dry and sore skin that no one could work out and this stuff is now my ‘go to’. I can’t use soaps, even Johnson baby wash gives me a reaction - but I find this stuff so soothing and if anyone is struggling with sensitive skin it’s worth a try - wish I’d known about it sooner!

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 01/12/2020 18:48

Vaseline is an occlusive
Basically it’s not going to add moisture just adds a barrier to stop your skin losing moisture- if you are probes to clogged pores it’s probably best to avoid
If you do use it put something hydrating/moisturising underneath and use the vaseline to seal the product in

FelicisNox · 01/12/2020 19:04

Just bought O Keefes! Thanks ladies.

Already have Vaseline so will be using that on my eyelashes tonight. Grin

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 01/12/2020 19:33

I read on here AGES ago about the Vaseline as a face mask thing and have been doing it once or twice a week since. I think it really works! My skin is the best it’s been despite being a bit peri menopausal. The other thing that I find really good is apple cider vinegar. I buy the capsules and they really help my skin. I notice the difference when I forget to buy or take them. They were recommended by a friend who had lovely skin now but previously had rosacea.

FranklyADick · 01/12/2020 19:38

@blueseasky best thing I have found for fungal feet/nails is a few weeks of regular Dettol foot baths.

JacketPotatoQueen · 01/12/2020 20:00

I find a good smearing of Vaseline on my forehead before dying my hair helps avoid the dye staining my skin when it inevitably strays / drips down from my hairline!

And I also swear by the vicks on the soles of your feet helping stop coughs overnight.... it honestly does seem to work, on me and the kids.

cms1972 · 01/12/2020 20:26

I'll try the Vaseline. Though I usually apply it to my eyelashes, not to my whole face Smile
Here's something else though - to clean your face in the morning.

Get that cheap aqueous cream from Savers (or the pound shop) and mix in loads of rice flour. Dove's Farm's rice flour is good - use a lot, mix it to a paste. Or use ground rice... depends how grainy you want it.

Slap it on your face when you're showering/bathing in the morning & leave it for a few minutes. Massage in & rinse! Kind to your skin & the environment & it's cheap, and I am regularly taken for ten years younger than my age! Grin

Tattygran14 · 01/12/2020 20:32

@peridito Wouldn't the friction be -er-inflammatory?

Smileyk · 01/12/2020 21:17

Vaseline and excema type creams are not flammable unless they are in contact with material - hence the cotton balls to start the fire. Stick a match in a pot of cream and nothing will happen. So if you use vaseline on your face and go to bed and smoke, then be careful of your pillow as it will have rubbed off your face onto it.

Benjispruce2 · 01/12/2020 21:19

The foot thing rings a bell as there was a scientific investigation into rubbing the dole of your foot with garlic and it giving you garlic breath later.

Benjispruce2 · 01/12/2020 21:19

Sole

Jemenfouscompletement · 01/12/2020 21:23

Here in France, Vaseline = lubrication for anal sex. Nothing other than that.

Nat6999 · 01/12/2020 21:24

Sudocrem face masks are supposed to be good.

dudsville · 01/12/2020 21:45

I love how varied this thread is.
