We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

To be honest I think a lot of people know that they won't have long left to scream at people to stay at home or to complain about people getting close enough to give their dog covid etc so they are having a last hurrah with it now.

@TabbyStar

I went swimming on Saturday and the pool was quite busy. It's a posh private gym though and it amuses me that the "maximum number using this..." is higher than the number I've ever seen using anything, e.g. 8 in a swim lane when it's pretty much never been more than 2 in the 11 years I've been a member. Really sad to see the café all packed away, people dropping off kids for lessons can sit in the steam room but not metres apart in the huge café area.
The best one I have seen is a local sweet shop that says no more than 300 people in at a time. When I went I was 1 of 8 in there.

There is a long between avoidance and anxiety- I think lockdown can cause a cycle as it leads to avoidance and then increased anxiety in some people.

I'm off swimming soon. I have decided to stop discussing activities with some people because of the replies. For example I mentioned it is quiet "I'm not surprised" or when I mentioned it to a school mum "Goodness, surprised that is open" stuff like that. Feel a bit sensitive at times so just going to crack on and avoid the people.

I'm definitely avoiding certain things, but not through fear of the actual virus, it's the measures, the palaver of planning and you know what's Wink Going off to a shop like The Range or Decathlon does feel like a bigger deal than it should, one of the reasons why I felt it was important to crack on with things.

That's on me though. Some of my boundaries are more relaxed, some more restrained. Do what you have to do to get by in unnatural circumstances. I'm comfortable that my behaviour is low risk to myself and to others.

I do feel sorry for people who are mentally still stuck in April... unless they start frothing and moralising about other people having the audacity to crack on with life. It's going to be a hard adjustment when normality returns, and return it will.

Assuming typo, unless you have the world's biggest local sweet shop?! Grin
There's a few tiny proper old man pubs in my town (the brewery is here). One of them has a sign saying max number of people is 17; I don't think I've ever seen more than the same four regulars & the barman in there.

MissEWeatherwax · 07/12/2020 14:38

Life went back to normal after The Black death, so there’s hope.

flower11 · 07/12/2020 14:53

They didn't have the bbc and the internet scare mongering then!!

TheOrchidKiller · 07/12/2020 14:53

Maybe this time next year there will be threads about "AIBU to think people are selfish for not supporting the Christmas markets?"

Or Why are there so many children off school this week? The nativity has been cancelled due to so much illness & I've spent weeks making a donkey costume from real horse hair forraged from the fences around local riding schools & it's gone to waste. Get a grip, it's only norovirus!"

Willow2017 · 07/12/2020 14:54

@AcornAutumn

There’s a comment on AIBU about how we should have a 3 month lockdown every year and I can’t tell if it’s a joke or not.
Good grief i hope its a joke because..well... AAaaarrrrgghghhhhh. Its too batshit to even contemplate.
Willow2017 · 07/12/2020 14:59

@AcornAutumn

“Although I'm sure the same people would be somewhat upset if the staff in supermarkets & warehouses, & the delivery drivers also took the same stance, & their shopping failed to turn up.“

This.

Yep. Funny how its ok for those invisible, unimportant NMW types to do all the shopping for 'Mr & MrsJones' but they wouldnt contemplate going near any shop full of 'disease ridden people' themselves.
MissEWeatherwax · 07/12/2020 15:01

@flower11, true Blush. It’s not mentally healthy to stay so hyper alert.

MissEWeatherwax · 07/12/2020 15:06

I have theatre to see, films to see next year. And DH and I have decided we are going out for food fortnightly. And I’m buying a new sofa, my spot on sofa has a noticeable dripBlush.

MercyBooth · 07/12/2020 15:20

Cleared out a big pile of old i newspapers from the corner of the living room. Strange going back through the headlines. You can see the loads of U turns that Johnson has done.

Next thing I think will be vaccinated family wanting visits from non vaccinated or wanting them to go places.

I've already has this. IL had decided they'll be vaccinated by Easter so told us they are coming over Easter. I had to say maybe not as we're waiting to find out what's going on with DD1 GCSEs and I'm not having track and trace get her or her pick up covid - IL would travel by train so possible- if she's sitting exams/assesments after Easter break not after the year she's had.

They seemed okay with that - and it may be possible for Easter to happen or even whitsun just don't know yet and if not summer holiday we'll see them.

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 15:53

I’ve just caught up with my sister and she said going out at the weekend was very difficult

They tried three restaurants who only had the booking menu available via app and their phones are too old for it.

They then got turned away from a couple of pubs for a drink after as they were up to capacity.

I knew it would get much more strict after the lockdown but I didn’t realise they’d actually stop handing out paper menus.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 15:54

Yes I also find the hassle and stress of everything off-putting I agree. But when you have gone out and done stuff it can feel better after, for me it is swimming. I really find the masks difficult as it reminds me of medical stuff in the past but the pool doesn't require masks thankfully.

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 15:55

Sorry, “booking” should be in there

I meant, they wouldn’t take details on paper, only via phones.

I'm biding time until I leap into action for the DC's swimming. I feel completely thrown about what the routine is! That said we did have the earlier lessom change time a few weeks before lockdown, and I was just settling into routine by that point. It must be 6 weeks since I took them as I got DH to do the last one as I was having a very fragile day at the edge of my limits. It was light when I went as it was the week before the clocks changed, something else that is probably confusing my darling little brain Grin

I last went in a pool in March. Done one river swm since. It's one of those things that falls into the "CBA: faff" department. I just used to turn up ad hoc if I was a bit sore from running or the weather being grim. I'm not a member anywhere and the pre-booking and pool protocols are off-putting. The pool where the DCs swim have put up pop-up tents poolside for minimal changing, but I think my claustrophobia would stop me getting into them. The poolside humidity and noise has always been at about my limit of coping threshold anyway. I much prefer a communal changing room to cubicals!

Once you try it BRBO, you might find it OK once you are in there. You leave your bag by the pool and it can be quite quiet and peaceful, I found anyway, there is an app for booking which is very easy to use. (council pool)

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 16:21

Maybe you could just wear your costume under and not have to get in the tent thing. But would need to after I suppose!

DominaShantotto · 07/12/2020 17:14

Oh those pop up tents are fucking ridiculous.

My kids' swimming isn't restarting till new year now - the students who do a lot of the teaching have gone home now.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 17:28

We just have to normal changing rooms, have not seen tents. We don't have the steam room and sauna open either.

TabbyStar · 07/12/2020 17:55

Our gym is pretty normal and the steam room and sauna are open, I was surprised, but as I'm pretty sure I've had covid I went in.

RobinHobb · 07/12/2020 18:05

Have been quiet recently - had an interview this afternoon! It was via the contact of a contact...
It was a bit weird but I hate zoom and teams and all this with a passion. They seemed a bit passive and didn't have any questions sorted, so I kind of leapt in with "I think your job is fascinating because blah blah..." and then it started flowing a bit better.
Well let's see.
The feedback was I didn't have any of the relevant lab experience and I wanted to wring my hands and weep... but covid! It cancelled my research placement..... but covid....

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 19:08

Robin it’s great you had an interview!

Taswama · 07/12/2020 19:14

I went swimming at my gym on Friday (maximum covid capacity 6, maximum normal capacity 4). Then a yoga class today. I hadn't been inside since late September / early October when the numbers were going up and I decided I didn't want to risk getting caught by track and trace. But have decided to risk it and feel a lot better for it.
